Present Continuous Tense in Persian
حال استمراری
Overview
The present continuous tense in Persian describes an action happening right now, at this very moment. It is the equivalent of English "I am eating" or "she is reading." At the A2 level, this tense adds an important temporal dimension to your Persian — you can now distinguish between what you generally do and what you are doing right at this moment.
The formation uses the verb داشتن (dāshtan, to have) as an auxiliary, followed by the simple present form of the main verb. Both the auxiliary and the main verb conjugate for person: دارم میخورم (dāram mikhoram, I am eating right now). This double conjugation is unique to the continuous tenses in Persian.
This tense is especially common in spoken Persian and is the natural way to describe actions in progress. If someone asks what you are doing, you would use the present continuous rather than the simple present.
How It Works
Formula: داشتن (conjugated) + می + present stem + personal ending
| Person | Auxiliary | Main Verb | Full Form |
|---|---|---|---|
| من | دارم | میخورم | دارم میخورم (I am eating) |
| تو | داری | میخوری | داری میخوری (you are eating) |
| او | دارد | میخورد | دارد میخورد (he/she is eating) |
| ما | داریم | میخوریم | داریم میخوریم (we are eating) |
| شما | دارید | میخورید | دارید میخورید (you are eating) |
| آنها | دارند | میخورند | دارند میخورند (they are eating) |
Key rules:
- Both verbs must agree in person (both say "I" or both say "he/she")
- The auxiliary داشتن comes first, then the main verb
- This tense CANNOT be negated — to say "I am not eating right now," use the simple present with negation: نمیخورم
- Colloquial: دارد becomes داره, میخورد becomes میخوره
Examples in Context
| Persian | English | Note |
|---|---|---|
| دارم غذا میخورم. | I am eating food (right now). | Action in progress |
| داری چه کار میکنی؟ | What are you doing (right now)? | Common question |
| بچهها دارند بازی میکنند. | The children are playing. | Plural subject |
| دارد باران میبارد. | It is raining. | Weather right now |
| داریم فارسی یاد میگیریم. | We are learning Persian. | Current activity |

| داری میری کجا؟ | Where are you going? | Colloquial |
| دارم فکر میکنم. | I am thinking. | Mental action in progress |

Common Mistakes
Forgetting the auxiliary داشتن
- Wrong: من میخورم (meaning "I am eating right now")
- Right: دارم میخورم
- Why: Without داشتن, you get the simple present (habitual), not the continuous (in progress right now).
Mismatching person between auxiliary and main verb
- Wrong: دارم میخورد (I + he/she)
- Right: دارم میخورم (I + I)
- Why: Both the auxiliary and the main verb must agree in person. If you say دارم, the main verb must also be first person.
Trying to negate the present continuous
- Wrong: ندارم میخورم
- Right: نمیخورم (using simple present negation for "I'm not eating")
- Why: The present continuous cannot be negated in Persian. Use the negative simple present instead.
Usage Notes
The present continuous is predominantly a spoken tense. In written Persian, the simple present often covers both habitual and progressive meanings, with context making the distinction clear. In conversation, however, the continuous tense is very common and signals immediacy — something happening at this exact moment.
In colloquial Tehran Persian, the forms contract significantly: دارم میخورم → دارم میخورم, and دارد میخورد → داره میخوره.
Practice Tips
- Practice describing what people around you are doing right now: او داره کتاب میخونه (he/she is reading a book), بچهها دارن بازی میکنن (the children are playing).
- Use the present continuous to answer the question داری چه کار میکنی؟ (What are you doing?) throughout your day. This builds real-time speaking practice.
- Compare pairs: فارسی یاد میگیرم (I learn/study Persian — habitual) vs دارم فارسی یاد میگیرم (I am studying Persian right now). Feel the difference in immediacy.
