Location and Direction Words in Persian

Overview

Spatial vocabulary — words for "here," "there," "up," "down," "in front of" — is essential for navigating the physical world in Persian. At the A1 level, these words let you describe where things are, ask for directions, and understand basic spatial instructions. Persian location words often combine with the ezafe to connect to the noun they describe.

The basic pair اینجا (injā, here) and آنجا (ānjā, there) covers the most immediate needs. Then a set of spatial nouns — بالا (bālā, up/above), پایین (pāyin, down/below), جلو (jelo, front), عقب (aqab, back), کنار (kenār, beside), وسط (vasat, middle) — give you precision when describing locations.

Common Mistakes

Forgetting ezafe with spatial nouns

• Wrong: جلو خانه (without ezafe)
• Right: جلوی خانه (jelo-ye khāne)
• Why: Spatial nouns need the ezafe to connect to the following noun.

Confusing بالا/پایین as only "up/down"

• Wrong: Only using بالا for vertical direction
• Right: بالای میز means "on/on top of the table" — a surface relationship
• Why: بالا covers both vertical direction and surface contact in Persian.

Practice Tips

1. Describe your room: کتاب روی میز است (the book is on the table), صندلی کنار میز است (the chair is beside the table).
2. Practice giving directions: مستقیم برو (go straight), به چپ بپیچ (turn left), سمت راست (on the right side).
