Can/To Be Able in Persian
فعل «توانستن»
Overview
The verb توانستن (tavānestan, "can/to be able") is essential for expressing ability and possibility in Persian. Like خواستن, it is followed by the subjunctive of the main verb. At the A1 level, learning this verb lets you talk about what you can and cannot do — a fundamental communication need.
In the present tense, it conjugates as میتوانم (mitavānam, I can), with the colloquial contraction میتونم (mitunam). The colloquial forms are used in virtually all spoken interactions. Combined with the subjunctive, you get practical sentences like میتونم فارسی حرف بزنم (I can speak Persian).
How It Works
| Person | Formal | Colloquial |
|---|---|---|
| من | میتوانم mitavānam | میتونم mitunam |
| تو | میتوانی mitavāni | میتونی mituni |
| او | میتواند mitavānad | میتونه mitune |
| ما | میتوانیم mitavānim | میتونیم mitunim |
| شما | میتوانید mitavānid | میتونید mitunid |
| آنها | میتوانند mitavānand | میتونن mitunan |
Pattern: میتوانم + subjunctive Negation: نمیتوانم / نمیتونم (I cannot)

Common Mistakes
Using infinitive instead of subjunctive
- Wrong: میتوانم رفتن
- Right: میتوانم بروم
- Why: Like all modals in Persian, توانستن requires the subjunctive.
Forgetting colloquial forms
- Wrong: میتوانم in casual conversation
- Right: میتونم
- Why: The full form sounds stilted in everyday speech.
Confusing "can" (ability) with "may" (permission)
- Wrong: Always using میتوانم for permission
- Right: For permission, اجازه دارم (I have permission) or میشود (is it possible) are more appropriate
- Why: میتوانم primarily expresses ability. Permission is better expressed differently.
Practice Tips
- List five things you can do and five you cannot in Persian: میتونم شنا کنم (I can swim), نمیتونم پیانو بزنم (I can't play piano).
- Practice polite requests with میتوانید: میتوانید آهستهتر صحبت کنید؟ (Can you speak more slowly?).
- Combine with other structures: فکر میکنم میتونم بیام (I think I can come).
