Basic Compound Verbs in Persian
فعلهای مرکب پایه
Overview
One of the most distinctive features of Persian is that the majority of its verbs are compound verbs — combinations of a noun or adjective with a "light verb." While English has maybe a few hundred simple verbs (run, eat, speak), Persian has only a handful of simple verbs and builds most of its vocabulary through compounds. Understanding this system is crucial from the A1 level.
A compound verb consists of a non-verbal element (usually a noun or adjective) plus a light verb. The most common light verbs are کردن kardan (to do/make), شدن shodan (to become), and زدن zadan (to hit/strike). For example, کار (work) + کردن (to do) = کار کردن (to work). The light verb carries the tense, person, and mood while the noun provides the core meaning.
This system is remarkably productive — once you learn a few light verbs, you can combine them with hundreds of nouns to create new verbs. This is one of the reasons Persian vocabulary is so expandable once you understand the pattern.
How It Works
The three most common light verbs:
| Light Verb | Meaning | Type of Compound |
|---|---|---|
| کردن kardan | to do/make | Active, transitive |
| شدن shodan | to become | Passive, intransitive |
| زدن zadan | to hit/strike | Various |
Common compounds with کردن:
| Compound | Components | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| کار کردن | work + do | to work |
| صحبت کردن | talk + do | to talk |
| فکر کردن | thought + do | to think |
| تمیز کردن | clean + do | to clean |
| شروع کردن | start + do | to start (something) |
| تمام کردن | finish + do | to finish (something) |
| زندگی کردن | life + do | to live |
| درست کردن | correct + do | to make/fix |
Common compounds with شدن:
| Compound | Components | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| شروع شدن | start + become | to start (intransitive) |
| تمام شدن | finish + become | to end (intransitive) |
| بلند شدن | tall + become | to stand up / get up |
| خوشحال شدن | happy + become | to become happy |
Common compounds with زدن:
| Compound | Components | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| حرف زدن | word + hit | to speak |
| زنگ زدن | bell + hit | to call (phone) |
| دست زدن | hand + hit | to clap / to touch |
Conjugation: Only the light verb conjugates. The noun/adjective stays unchanged:
- کار میکنم (I work), کار میکنی (you work), کار میکند (he/she works)
Examples in Context
| Persian | English | Note |
|---|---|---|
| کار میکنم kār mikonam | I work | work + do |
| صحبت میکند sohbat mikonad | He/She talks | talk + do |
| شروع شد shoru' shod | It started | start + became |
| حرف میزنم harf mizanam | I speak | word + strike |
| فکر میکنم fekr mikonam | I think | thought + do |
| زنگ زدم zang zadam | I called | bell + hit (past) |
| بلند شو! boland sho! | Stand up! | tall + become (imperative) |
| تمام شد tamām shod | It's finished | finish + became |
| درست کردم dorost kardam | I made/fixed it | correct + did |
| زندگی میکنیم zendegi mikonim | We live | life + do |
Common Mistakes
Conjugating the noun part instead of the light verb
- Wrong: کارم میکنم (attaching ending to کار)
- Right: کار میکنم
- Why: Only the light verb (کردن، شدن، زدن) conjugates. The noun/adjective part never changes.
Confusing کردن and شدن pairs
- Wrong: من شروع شدم (I started something)
- Right: من شروع کردم (I started something — transitive)
- Why: کردن = you do it (transitive), شدن = it happens (intransitive). شروع کردن = to start something, شروع شدن = to begin (on its own).
Separating compound verb parts
- Wrong: Placing too many words between the noun and the light verb
- Right: Keep them close: کار نمیکنم (I don't work), not کار هیچوقت نمیکنم
- Why: While some separation is possible, compound verbs work best kept together, especially at the beginner level.
Practice Tips
- Learn compound verbs as complete units, not separate words. Think of کار کردن as one vocabulary item meaning "to work," not "work" + "to do."
- Practice the کردن/شدن pairs together: شروع کردن (to start something) / شروع شدن (to start on its own), تمام کردن (to finish something) / تمام شدن (to end on its own). This trains the transitive/intransitive distinction.
- When you learn a new noun, ask yourself whether it combines with کردن, شدن, or زدن. This habit rapidly expands your verb vocabulary.
