Conditional Mood in Basque
Baldintza
Overview
The conditional mood allows you to express hypothetical situations, wishes, and polite requests. At the B1 level, conditionals are essential for discussing possibilities, making plans contingent on conditions, and expressing what you would do in different circumstances.
Basque conditional sentences use the prefix ba- (if) attached to the verb of the condition clause. The main clause uses conditional auxiliary forms with the -ke infix. There are two main types: real conditionals (things that might happen) and unreal conditionals (hypothetical situations). Real conditionals use present or future forms, while unreal conditionals use special conditional auxiliaries.
The structure follows the pattern: ba- + condition clause, main clause with conditional verb. The order can be reversed, and both clauses carry specific verb forms.
How It Works
Real conditionals (possible situations):
| Condition (ba- + verb) | Result | Example |
|---|---|---|
| ba- + present | future | Euria egiten badu, etxean geratuko naiz. |
| ba- + present | present | Nahi bazenu, lagun dezaket. |
Unreal conditionals (hypothetical):
| Condition | Result | Example |
|---|---|---|
| ba- + subjunctive | conditional (-ke) | Jakingo banu, esango nizuke. |
| ba- + past | conditional past | Dirua izango banu, bidaiatu egingo nuke. |
Conditional auxiliary forms (with -ke):
| Person | Intransitive | Transitive (sg. object) |
|---|---|---|
| ni | nintzateke | nuke |
| zu | zinateke | zenuke |
| hura | litzateke | luke |
| gu | ginateke | genuke |
| zuek | zinatekete | zenukete |
| haiek | lirateke | lukete |
Ba- prefix on auxiliaries:
| Affirmative | With ba- | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| da | bada | if it is |
| du | badu | if he/she has/does |
| naiz | banaiz | if I am |
| dut | badut | if I have/do |

Common Mistakes
Forgetting the ba- prefix on the condition
- Wrong: Euria egiten du, etxean geratuko naiz.
- Right: Euria egiten badu, etxean geratuko naiz.
- Why: The condition clause must have ba- attached to the auxiliary: badu, banaiz, banu, etc. Without it, the sentence is not conditional.
Using present auxiliaries for unreal conditionals
- Wrong: Jakingo banu, esango dut.
- Right: Jakingo banu, esango nizuke.
- Why: Unreal conditionals require conditional auxiliaries (-ke forms) in the result clause: nuke, luke, nintzateke, etc.
Confusing ba- (if) with ba- (emphatic)
- Wrong: Thinking badakit means "if I know"
- Right: Badakit means "I DO know" (emphatic). "If I know" is badakit in some contexts but the ba- is structurally different
- Why: The emphatic ba- (affirmative emphasis) and the conditional ba- (if) look identical but function differently. Context and clause structure distinguish them.
Usage Notes
Conditional sentences in Basque can become quite complex, especially when combining tenses and moods. The polite conditional is widely used in everyday requests: Mesedez, egin zenezake? (Could you do it, please?) uses the conditional to soften the request. Regional variation exists in the conditional auxiliary forms, with some dialects preferring slightly different shapes. As you advance to C1, you will encounter counterfactual conditionals with past conditional forms.
Practice Tips
- Start with real conditionals using badu/bada + future result. Create five "if... then" sentences about weather, plans, and daily life.
- Practice unreal conditionals with the pattern: [verb]-ko banu, [verb]-ko nuke. What would you do if you won the lottery, if you could fly, if you spoke five languages?
- Use conditional forms for polite requests in everyday interactions: Lagundu ahal zenidake? (Could you help me?)
