Poder (can/to be able) in Spanish

Overview

The verb poder is a modal verb meaning "can," "to be able to," or "may." At the A1 level, it is one of the first irregular verbs you will learn because it lets you express ability, permission, and possibility. Whether you are asking for permission in a restaurant, saying what you can or cannot do, or talking about what is possible, poder is the verb you need.

Poder features an o → ue stem change, meaning the o in the stem becomes ue in all forms except nosotros and vosotros. It is always followed by an infinitive verb, making it easy to build sentences once you know the pattern: conjugated poder + infinitive.

Poder + infinitive structure

Poder is always followed by a verb in the infinitive:

Common Mistakes

Forgetting the stem change

• Wrong: Yo podo nadar.
• Right: Yo puedo nadar.
• Why: Poder changes its stem from o to ue in all forms except nosotros and vosotros.

Conjugating the verb after poder

• Wrong: Puedo hablo español.
• Right: Puedo hablar español.
• Why: After poder (or any modal verb), the second verb stays in the infinitive form. Only poder is conjugated.

Applying the stem change to nosotros

• Wrong: Nosotros puedemos ir.
• Right: Nosotros podemos ir.
• Why: The nosotros and vosotros forms do not undergo the stem change. They keep the original o.

Practice Tips

• Ask for permission throughout the day. Practice ¿Puedo...? in daily situations: ¿Puedo sentarme aquí? ¿Puedo usar tu teléfono? ¿Puedo pagar con tarjeta?
• List what you can and cannot do. Write five things you can do and five you cannot: Puedo cocinar, no puedo cantar bien.
