Gustar (to like) in Spanish

El Verbo Gustar

Overview

The verb gustar is one of the most important and most misunderstood verbs in Spanish. It is commonly translated as "to like," but it actually works more like "to be pleasing to." This reversed structure means that the thing you like is the grammatical subject, and you (the person who likes it) are expressed with an indirect object pronoun. It takes some getting used to, but once you grasp the pattern, you will use it dozens of times a day.

At the CEFR A1 level, gustar is essential because expressing likes and dislikes is one of the first things you want to do in any language. The same pattern applies to several other common verbs like encantar (to love), interesar (to interest), and molestar (to bother), so learning gustar well gives you a template for an entire family of verbs.

How It Works

The basic structure

Indirect object pronoun + gusta/gustan + the thing liked

Pronoun Meaning Example
me I like Me gusta el café.
te you like Te gusta la música.
le he/she/you (formal) likes Le gusta viajar.
nos we like Nos gusta la playa.
os you all like (Spain) Os gusta el cine.
les they/you all (formal) like Les gusta la comida.

Gusta vs. gustan

The verb agrees with the thing liked, not the person:

What you like Verb form Example
Singular noun gusta Me gusta el libro. (I like the book.)
Plural noun gustan Me gustan los libros. (I like books.)
Infinitive verb gusta Me gusta leer. (I like to read.)
Multiple infinitives gusta Me gusta leer y escribir. (I like to read and write.)

Clarifying with a + noun/pronoun

Since le and les are ambiguous, add a + name/pronoun for clarity:

Clarified Meaning
A María le gusta el café. María likes coffee.
A él le gusta el café. He likes coffee.
A ellos les gustan los perros. They like dogs.
A mí me gusta el chocolate. I like chocolate. (emphatic)
A ti te gusta bailar. You like to dance. (emphatic)

Negation

Place no before the indirect object pronoun:

  • No me gusta el frío. -- I don't like the cold.
  • No nos gustan las arañas. -- We don't like spiders.

Similar verbs

These verbs follow the exact same pattern as gustar:

Verb Meaning Example
encantar to love (a thing) Me encanta la pizza.
interesar to interest Me interesan las ciencias.
molestar to bother Me molesta el ruido.
importar to matter No me importa.
fascinar to fascinate Nos fascina la historia.

Common Mistakes

Conjugating gustar for the person

  • Wrong: Yo gusto la pizza.
  • Right: Me gusta la pizza.
  • Why: Gustar does not work like English "to like." The subject is the thing liked (la pizza), and the person is expressed with an indirect object pronoun (me).

Using gusta with plural nouns

  • Wrong: Me gusta los perros.
  • Right: Me gustan los perros.
  • Why: The verb must agree with the thing liked. Los perros is plural, so you need gustan.

Forgetting the article before the noun

  • Wrong: Me gusta pizza.
  • Right: Me gusta la pizza.
  • Why: In Spanish, when talking about likes in general, you need the definite article before the noun.

Confusing a mí me gusta with yo gusto

  • Wrong: Yo gusto el chocolate.
  • Right: A mí me gusta el chocolate.
  • Why: Even when you want to emphasize "I," you use a mí + me gusta, never yo gusto. The structure always uses indirect object pronouns.

Practice Tips

  • Think "it pleases me." Retrain your brain to think of gustar as "to be pleasing to" rather than "to like." Me gusta el café = "Coffee is pleasing to me." This mental shift makes the grammar click.

  • Practice with lists. Write a list of things you like and things you dislike: Me gusta el chocolate. No me gustan las arañas. Me encanta la música. Vary between singular and plural nouns to practice gusta vs. gustan.

  • Extend to other verbs. Once gustar feels natural, try the same pattern with encantar, interesar, molestar. The more verbs you use this way, the more the pattern solidifies.
