Estar (to be) - Present in Spanish
El Verbo Estar - Presente
Overview
The verb estar is the second of Spanish's two "to be" verbs, and at the A1 level it is just as essential as ser. While ser covers identity and inherent characteristics, estar is your go-to verb for expressing location, temporary states, feelings, and the results of actions. When you say how you feel, where something is, or describe a condition that can change, you use estar.
Estar is irregular in the present tense, but its forms are predictable once you learn them. You will use this verb dozens of times a day in Spanish, from the common greeting "¿Cómo estás?" to describing where you are and how you feel.
The distinction between ser and estar is unique to Spanish and a few related languages. Do not worry about mastering it all at once. Start by learning the core uses of each verb separately, and the contrast will become clearer over time.
How It Works
Present tense conjugation
| Subject | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| yo | estoy | Estoy contento. (I'm happy.) |
| tú | estás | ¿Estás bien? (Are you okay?) |
| él / ella / usted | está | Está en casa. (He/She is at home.) |
| nosotros/as | estamos | Estamos cansados. (We're tired.) |
| vosotros/as | estáis | ¿Estáis listos? (Are you all ready?) |
| ellos / ellas / ustedes | están | Están en el parque. (They're in the park.) |
Note that all forms except estoy and estamos carry a written accent on the last syllable.

Common Mistakes
Using ser for location
- Wrong: El libro es en la mesa.
- Right: El libro está en la mesa.
- Why: Physical location of things and people uses estar, not ser. (Events are the exception: La fiesta es en mi casa.)
Forgetting the accent marks
- Wrong: Tu estas bien.
- Right: Tú estás bien.
- Why: The accent on estás is not optional. It distinguishes the verb form from other words and reflects the stress pattern.
Using estar for inherent traits
- Wrong: María está alta. (meaning she is a tall person)
- Right: María es alta.
- Why: Permanent physical characteristics use ser. You could say María está más alta to mean she has grown (change of state), but the general description uses ser.
Confusing temporary and permanent with food
- Wrong: La sopa es fría. (when the soup has gone cold)
- Right: La sopa está fría.
- Why: If the soup was hot and is now cold, that is a temporary state (estar). If you are describing gazpacho, which is served cold by nature, you might use ser.
Practice Tips
- Check in with yourself. Throughout the day, describe how you feel: Estoy cansado, estoy contento, estoy aburrido. This builds the habit of using estar for states.
- Describe locations around you. Look around and say where things are: El teléfono está en la mesa, las llaves están en el bolso.
- Learn estar and ser side by side. Practice pairs like Es guapa (she's pretty, always) vs. Está guapa (she looks pretty, right now) to feel the contrast.
