Subjunctive II: wäre, hätte
Konjunktiv II: wäre, hätte
Subjunctive II: wäre, hätte in German
Overview
Among all the Subjunctive II forms in German, wäre (would be) and hätte (would have) are the two you will use most often. These are the Konjunktiv II forms of the fundamental verbs sein and haben, and they appear constantly in everyday German — in wishes, hypothetical statements, polite requests, and conditional sentences.
At the B1 level, mastering wäre and hätte is essential because they are used on their own far more than the würde + infinitive construction for these two verbs. Saying Ich wäre froh (I would be happy) sounds completely natural, while Ich würde froh sein sounds unnecessarily complicated to German ears.
These forms also serve as the building blocks for past subjunctive constructions (hätte gemacht, wäre gegangen), which you will encounter at B2. Getting comfortable with them now sets you up for more advanced grammar later.
How It Works
Conjugation of wäre
| Person | Form |
|---|---|
| ich | wäre |
| du | wär(e)st |
| er/sie/es | wäre |
| wir | wären |
| ihr | wär(e)t |
| sie/Sie | wären |
Conjugation of hätte
| Person | Form |
|---|---|
| ich | hätte |
| du | hättest |
| er/sie/es | hätte |
| wir | hätten |
| ihr | hättet |
| sie/Sie | hätten |
Key patterns:
- Wäre is used wherever sein would be used in the indicative, but shifted into the hypothetical or unreal.
- Hätte replaces haben in the same way.
- Both are frequently used in wenn-clauses (if-clauses): Wenn ich Zeit hätte... (If I had time...).
- Hätte gern is an extremely common way to order something politely: Ich hätte gern einen Kaffee.
Examples in Context
| German | English | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Wenn ich reich wäre... | If I were rich... | Classic hypothetical |
| Ich hätte gern ein Bier. | I would like a beer. | Polite ordering |
| Das wäre schön. | That would be nice. | Reacting to a suggestion |
| Wenn ich du wäre, würde ich das machen. | If I were you, I would do that. | Giving advice |
| Hätten Sie einen Moment Zeit? | Would you have a moment? | Formal polite request |
| Ich wäre lieber am Strand. | I would rather be at the beach. | Expressing a wish |
| Wir hätten eine Frage. | We would have a question. | Polite framing |
| Wenn das möglich wäre, wäre ich sehr dankbar. | If that were possible, I would be very grateful. | Formal request |
| Er hätte das nicht tun sollen. | He shouldn't have done that. | Regret or criticism |
| Wäre es okay, wenn ich später komme? | Would it be okay if I came later? | Asking permission |
Common Mistakes
Using würde sein instead of wäre
- Wrong: Ich würde froh sein.
- Right: Ich wäre froh.
- Why: Native speakers almost always use wäre rather than würde... sein. The würde version sounds unnatural.
Using würde haben instead of hätte
- Wrong: Ich würde gern ein Bier haben.
- Right: Ich hätte gern ein Bier.
- Why: Just like with wäre, the simple form hätte is strongly preferred over the würde construction.
Confusing wäre and hätte
- Wrong: Ich hätte gern am Strand. (meaning: I would like to be at the beach)
- Right: Ich wäre gern am Strand.
- Why: Use wäre when the indicative would require sein (for location, state, or identity) and hätte when it would require haben (for possession).
Forgetting the umlaut
- Wrong: Ich hatte gern ein Bier. (= I had a beer, past tense)
- Right: Ich hätte gern ein Bier. (= I would like a beer)
- Why: The umlaut is what distinguishes Subjunctive II (hätte/wäre) from the simple past (hatte/war). Missing it changes the meaning entirely.
Usage Notes
Wäre and hätte are used across all registers of German, from casual conversation to formal writing. They are not restricted to any particular region or social context.
In restaurants, cafes, and shops, Ich hätte gern... is the standard polite way to order. It is softer than the imperative (Geben Sie mir...) and more natural than Ich möchte... in many situations.
In formal emails and business communication, Wäre es möglich, dass... (Would it be possible that...) and Hätten Sie Zeit für... (Would you have time for...) are everyday formulations. Mastering these phrases gives your German a professional polish.
These two forms are also the foundation for conditional sentences: Wenn ich mehr Zeit hätte, wäre ich entspannter (If I had more time, I would be more relaxed).
Practice Tips
- Memorize the hätte and wäre conjugation tables until they are automatic. Then practice converting real-life sentences: Ich bin müde becomes Ich wäre müde, wenn...; Ich habe Hunger becomes Ich hätte Hunger, wenn...
- Practice ordering in restaurants using Ich hätte gern... with different items. This gives you a natural, everyday use case for the form.
- Write five "If I were..." sentences about your life using wenn ich... wäre/hätte and share them with a language partner.
