Nominalization in Danish

Nominalisering

This article is part of the Danish grammar tree on Settemila Lingue.

In Brief

Danish nominalization turns a verb or adjective into a noun: at forbedre “to improve” becomes en forbedring “an improvement,” while skøn “beautiful” becomes skønhed “beauty.” The common endings -ning, -else, and -hed provide useful patterns, but the choice between them is not completely predictable. Nominalizations are especially frequent in formal and administrative writing, where they package an action or quality as a thing that can be discussed, measured, or modified.

Overview

A nominalization is a noun formed from another kind of word, usually a verb or an adjective. A noun is a word for a person, thing, event, idea, or quality. Compare the verb at udvikle “to develop” with the noun udvikling “development,” and the adjective fri “free” with frihed “freedom.” Danish calls this process nominalisering.

At C1, the challenge is not merely recognizing endings. You need to know which established noun a particular base word takes, how the noun behaves with articles and endings, and whether a noun-heavy sentence sounds precise or unnecessarily bureaucratic. Nominalizations are common in reports, research, public administration, journalism, business correspondence, and headings. They also occur naturally in everyday expressions such as træffe en beslutning “make a decision” and have betydning “be significant.”

English uses the same broad strategy in pairs such as “improve/improvement” and “free/freedom.” That resemblance is helpful, but it can also mislead you: an English noun ending does not tell you whether Danish needs -ning, -else, -hed, another ending, or a shorter noun with no obvious suffix. Learn frequent Danish nouns with their base word, gender, and usual word partners.

How It Works

The three central suffixes

A suffix is an ending added to a word or stem to create a new word. The following tendencies are useful, but they are not mechanical rules that can generate every noun.

Suffix Usually starts from Typical meaning Examples
-ning a verb an action, process, or result forbedring, udvikling, betaling, åbning
-else a verb an action, event, process, or state bevægelse, tilladelse, forståelse, undersøgelse
-hed an adjective a quality, condition, or degree skønhed, sikkerhed, frihed, mulighed

The spelling of the base may change when the suffix is attached. It is therefore safer to learn the complete noun than to attach an ending yourself.

Nouns in -ning

-ning is highly productive with verbs: it is often used to create new terms when an action or its outcome needs a name.

Verb Noun Meaning
at forbedre en forbedring to improve → an improvement
at udvikle en udvikling to develop → a development
at betale en betaling to pay → a payment
at åbne en åbning to open → an opening
at løse en løsning to solve → a solution
at lovgive lovgivning to legislate → legislation

A noun in -ning may name the activity itself, the outcome, or both. En oversættelse is a translation, but oversættelse can also refer to the activity of translating; similarly, udvikling may mean an ongoing process or a resulting change. Context supplies the intended reading.

Do not assume that every verb takes -ning. For example, at undersøge gives en undersøgelse, and at tillade gives en tilladelse. Established usage decides the form.

Nouns in -else

-else also forms nouns from verbs. It is common in both ordinary and formal vocabulary, but it is less safe to treat it as a freely interchangeable alternative to -ning.

Verb Noun Meaning
at bevæge en bevægelse to move → a movement
at tillade en tilladelse to permit → permission/a permit
at forstå en forståelse to understand → understanding
at undersøge en undersøgelse to investigate/examine → an investigation/examination
at ansætte en ansættelse to employ → employment/an appointment
at opleve en oplevelse to experience → an experience

Sometimes related forms have different meanings rather than being variants. En oplysning is a piece of information, while oplysning can also refer more broadly to enlightenment or the provision of information. The verb-noun relationship must therefore be learned together with meaning and context.

One especially important form is beslutning “decision,” from at beslutte “to decide.” The standard noun is not beslutelse. The spelling and suffix cannot be predicted merely by removing -te from the verb.

Nouns in -hed

-hed usually turns an adjective into an abstract noun—a noun for a quality or state that cannot normally be touched.

Adjective Noun Meaning
skøn skønhed beautiful → beauty
sikker sikkerhed safe/certain → safety/certainty
fri frihed free → freedom
mulig mulighed possible → possibility/opportunity
lig lighed equal/alike → equality/similarity
effektiv effektivitet effective → effectiveness/efficiency

The last pair shows an important limit: Danish has other noun-forming endings too. Effektiv normally becomes effektivitet, not a newly invented -hed form. Other common abstract endings include -itet (stabilitet), -skab (venskab), and -dom (rigdom). These belong to the wider system of word formation, but -hed remains the central pattern for many adjective-based qualities.

Gender, articles, and inflection

Most nouns in -ning, -else, and -hed are common-gender nouns and therefore take en, but you should still learn gender with each noun. Inflection means changing a word’s ending to mark forms such as definite or plural.

Indefinite singular Definite singular Indefinite plural Definite plural
en forbedring forbedringen forbedringer forbedringerne
en beslutning beslutningen beslutninger beslutningerne
en tilladelse tilladelsen tilladelser tilladelserne
en mulighed muligheden muligheder mulighederne

Many abstract nouns can be used without an article when they refer to a quality or activity in general: Sikkerhed er vigtig “Safety is important.” Use the definite form for a specific, identifiable instance or concept: Sikkerheden på arbejdspladsen er forbedret “Safety in the workplace has improved.” Countable meanings allow an article and plural: en mulighed, flere muligheder.

Turning a clause into a noun phrase

Nominalization often compresses a whole clause. A clause is a group of words built around a verb; a noun phrase is a noun together with words that specify or describe it.

Danish English Note
Virksomheden udvikler produktet. The company is developing the product. Clause with an active verb
Virksomhedens udvikling af produktet fortsætter. The company’s development of the product continues. The actor becomes a possessive; the object follows af
Systemet blev forbedret. The system was improved. Passive clause
Forbedringen af systemet gav gode resultater. The improvement of the system produced good results. The process becomes the head noun
Systemet er sikkert. The system is safe. Adjective describes the system
Systemets sikkerhed er afgørende. The system’s safety is crucial. Quality expressed as a noun

The Danish s-genitive (the possessive form ending in -s) often marks the person or organization responsible: regeringens gennemførelse af reformen “the government’s implementation of the reform.” The thing affected commonly follows af: gennemførelsen af reformen. An af phrase can occasionally be ambiguous, so rewrite if it is unclear who did what.

Typical verb-noun partnerships

Nominalizations often occur with a support verb, a fairly general verb whose main job is to carry tense while the noun carries most of the meaning. These combinations are conventional; translating English “make,” “do,” or “take” word for word often produces the wrong Danish verb.

Danish combination Natural English equivalent
træffe en beslutning make a decision
foretage en undersøgelse conduct an investigation/examination
foretage en vurdering make an assessment
gennemføre en ændring implement/carry out a change
give tilladelse grant permission
have betydning matter/be significant
tage hensyn til take account of/consider

Common Mistakes

Inventing beslutelse

  • Wrong: Beslutelsen blev truffet i går.
  • Right: Beslutningen blev truffet i går.
  • Why: The established noun from at beslutte is en beslutning. -ning and -else are not freely interchangeable.

Attaching a productive suffix to every base

  • Wrong: Rapporten undersøger projektets stabilhed.
  • Right: Rapporten undersøger projektets stabilitet.
  • Why: The standard abstract noun from stabil is stabilitet. Some adjective-based nouns use -itet or another established ending, so check the noun rather than automatically adding -hed.

Copying an English support verb

  • Wrong: De gjorde en beslutning.
  • Right: De traf en beslutning.
  • Why: English “make a decision” corresponds to Danish træffe en beslutning. Learn the whole combination, not just the noun.

Forgetting af before the affected thing

  • Wrong: forbedringen systemet
  • Right: forbedringen af systemet
  • Why: When a verb’s object is carried into a nominalization, Danish commonly introduces it with af: forbedre systemet → forbedringen af systemet.

Using the wrong definiteness

  • Wrong: En sikkerheden er vigtig.
  • Right: Sikkerhed er vigtig. / Sikkerheden på hospitalet er vigtig.
  • Why: A general abstract quality often has no article. A specific quality can take the suffixed definite article -en; do not combine en with that definite ending.

Making every sentence noun-heavy

  • Awkward: Der blev foretaget en gennemførelse af en vurdering af forslaget.
  • Clearer: Forslaget blev vurderet. / Udvalget vurderede forslaget.
  • Why: Several nominalizations and support verbs in a row hide the action and the actor. Formal Danish values precision, not maximum abstraction.

Usage Notes

Nominalizations are particularly useful when the action itself is the topic. A report may discuss udviklingen i priserne “the development in prices” across several sentences; keeping udviklingen as the topic creates continuity. They are also useful when a writer needs to classify, count, compare, or modify an event: tre ændringer, en grundig undersøgelse, den forventede forbedring.

Formal Danish often combines nominalization with the passive voice or an impersonal construction. Ansøgningen behandles inden for ti dage foregrounds the application and procedure, not the employee handling it. This can be appropriate when the actor is unknown, obvious, or irrelevant. If responsibility matters, name the actor: Styrelsen behandler ansøgningen inden for ti dage.

Compared with English, Danish formal prose often permits similar noun chains, but Danish spelling makes compounds especially visible. Established compounds are written as one word: sikkerhedsvurdering “safety assessment,” produktudvikling “product development,” and betalingsfrist “payment deadline.” Avoid inserting an English-style space inside a Danish compound. Very long compounds may be correct but hard to read; rephrasing with af, for, or a clause can improve clarity.

The same nominalization may range from abstract to countable. Forståelse er vigtig refers to understanding generally, while en bestemt forståelse af begrebet means a particular interpretation. Udvikling can denote development as a process, and en udvikling can mean one development or trend. Article choice therefore depends on meaning, not only on the suffix.

Beyond the Basics / Advanced Use

Nominalization changes more than word class: it changes how information is organized. A finite verb—a verb marked for tense—usually tells the reader directly who did what and when. A noun does not express tense by itself. Compare Regeringen ændrede reglerne i maj “The government changed the rules in May” with regeringens ændring af reglerne “the government’s change to the rules.” The second form must get its time from context or from an added phrase such as i maj.

This loss of tense can be useful. A noun phrase can present an action as an established fact and then fit into another sentence position:

Danish English Note
At priserne steg, overraskede analytikerne. That prices rose surprised the analysts. A full clause names the fact
Prisstigningen overraskede analytikerne. The price increase surprised the analysts. Compact nominalization
Fordi virksomheden udvidede, ansatte den flere medarbejdere. Because the company expanded, it hired more employees. Relationship stated with a conjunction
Virksomhedens udvidelse førte til flere ansættelser. The company’s expansion led to more hires. Events presented as linked entities

The compact versions are not automatically better. They make it easier to connect complex ideas, but they can suppress agents and logical relationships. For instance, efter vurderingen does not say who assessed what, while efter at eksperterne havde vurderet planen does. Skilled formal writing alternates between clauses and nominalizations according to what the reader needs.

Nominalizations can also form dense compounds. In risikovurderingsprocedure, the final element procedure is the main noun; risikovurdering specifies what kind of procedure it is. Read such a compound from right to left in broad steps: “procedure” → “assessment procedure” → “risk-assessment procedure.” When writing, use a long compound only if readers will recognize it easily. Proceduren for risikovurdering may be clearer.

Finally, lexicalization matters. A lexicalized form is a word that has become established with its own conventional meaning. En ledelse can mean “a management team,” not simply the act of leading; en forretning commonly means “a business/shop,” although it is historically related to a verb. A dictionary entry and real context are more reliable than suffix analysis once a noun has developed specialized meanings.

Practice Tips

  1. Build word families, not isolated lists. Record at forbedre – en forbedring – forbedringen – forbedringer and add one natural phrase such as en markant forbedring. Include the article because most of these nouns are common gender, but gender still belongs to the individual word.
  2. Transform sentences in both directions. Change Kommunen godkendte planen into kommunens godkendelse af planen, then turn the noun phrase back into a clear clause. Check what happened to the actor, object, and time reference.
  3. Collect collocations from formal texts. Notice the verbs beside each noun: træffe en beslutning, foretage en vurdering, gennemføre en ændring. When revising your own writing, underline every -ning, -else, and -hed noun and ask whether it clarifies the topic or hides a simpler verb.
