Negation with Ikke in Danish
Nægtelse med Ikke
Overview
Negation with ikke (not) is one of the first grammar points you will use constantly at the A1 level. The basic rule is straightforward: place ikke after the finite verb to negate a sentence. Jeg forstar (I understand) becomes Jeg forstar ikke (I don't understand).
Negation with 'ikke' (not) placed after the verb in main clauses, before the verb in subordinate clauses. Unlike English, Danish does not need an auxiliary verb like "do" for negation. You never say the equivalent of "I do not understand"; instead, you simply add ikke after the main verb. This makes basic negation in Danish simpler than in English.
The trickiest aspect of ikke placement is that it changes position in subordinate clauses, where it moves to before the verb. This distinction between main clause and subordinate clause word order is a fundamental feature of Danish that you will explore more as you advance.
Formation
Main clause negation
Place ikke after the finite verb:
| Affirmative | Negative |
|---|---|
| Jeg forstar. | Jeg forstar ikke. |
| Hun kommer i dag. | Hun kommer ikke i dag. |
| Det er svart. | Det er ikke svart. |
| Vi taler dansk. | Vi taler ikke dansk. |
Subordinate clause negation
Place ikke before the finite verb:
| Main clause | Subordinate clause |
|---|---|
| Jeg forstar ikke. | ...at jeg ikke forstar. |
| Hun kommer ikke. | ...fordi hun ikke kommer. |
| Vi har ikke tid. | ...om vi ikke har tid. |
Negation with modal verbs
Ikke comes after the modal verb, before the infinitive:
| Danish | English |
|---|---|
| Jeg kan ikke svomme. | I can't swim. |
| Hun vil ikke ga. | She doesn't want to go. |
| Vi skal ikke vente. | We don't have to wait. |
Other negative words
| Danish | English |
|---|---|
| aldrig | never |
| intet / ingenting | nothing |
| ingen | no one / none |
| hverken...eller | neither...nor |

Common Mistakes
Placing ikke before the verb in main clauses
- Wrong: Jeg ikke forstår.
- Right: Jeg forstår ikke.
- Why: In main clauses, ikke goes after the finite verb. Placing it before the verb follows subordinate clause rules, not main clause rules.
Keeping main clause order in subordinate clauses
- Wrong: ...at jeg forstår ikke.
- Right: ...at jeg ikke forstår.
- Why: In subordinate clauses (after at, fordi, om, når, etc.), ikke moves before the finite verb.
Using auxiliary "do" for negation
- Wrong: Jeg gør ikke tale dansk. (mimicking "I do not speak")
- Right: Jeg taler ikke dansk.
- Why: Danish does not use auxiliary verbs for negation. Simply place ikke after the main verb.
Usage Notes
The placement of ikke is closely tied to clause type: after the verb in main clauses, before the verb in subordinate clauses. This distinction is one of the key challenges for learners, as it requires you to identify what type of clause you are in. In spoken Danish, ikke is often shortened to "'kke" and may be further reduced in very fast speech.
