Location with Bod in Welsh

Lleoliad gyda Bod

Overview

Expressing where things and people are is a fundamental A1 skill. Welsh uses "bod" (to be) with prepositions to describe location, following the familiar "mae + subject + preposition + place" pattern. This builds directly on your knowledge of "bod" and simple prepositions.

The question "Ble mae...?" (Where is...?) is one of the most useful phrases in Welsh, allowing you to ask for directions, find objects, and talk about where people live and work. Location expressions also give you practice with the preposition "yn" and its interaction with the definite article.

How It Works

Basic Pattern

Mae + subject + preposition + place

Welsh English
Mae'r siop yn y dref. The shop is in town.
Mae'r plant yn yr ardd. The children are in the garden.
Mae e ar y bwrdd. It is on the table.

Asking About Location

Welsh English
Ble mae'r orsaf? Where is the station?
Ble mae'r tŷ bach? Where is the toilet?
Ble dych chi'n byw? Where do you live?

Common Location Prepositions

Preposition Meaning Example
yn in yn y tŷ (in the house)
ar on ar y bwrdd (on the table)
wrth ymyl next to wrth ymyl y siop (next to the shop)
o flaen in front of o flaen y tŷ (in front of the house)
y tu ôl i behind y tu ôl i'r car (behind the car)
dan / o dan under dan y gadair (under the chair)
rhwng between rhwng y siop a'r ysgol (between the shop and the school)

Common Mistakes

Forgetting the article in location phrases

  • Wrong: Mae e ar bwrdd.
  • Right: Mae e ar y bwrdd.
  • Why: In Welsh, when referring to a specific table, the definite article is needed, just as in English "on the table."

Using wrong form of "yn" with places

  • Wrong: yn Caerdydd
  • Right: yng Nghaerdydd (nasal mutation with "yn" for places)
  • Why: "Yn" (in) triggers nasal mutation of place names starting with c, p, t, b, d, g.

Confusing "yn" (in) with "yn" (linking particle)

  • Wrong: Mutating the verb-noun after location "yn"
  • Right: Location "yn" + place name = nasal mutation. Linking "yn" + verb-noun = no mutation.
  • Why: These are different words with different grammatical functions.

Practice Tips

  1. Describe your home: Say where things are in your house: "Mae'r teledu yn y lolfa. Mae'r bwrdd yn y gegin."

  2. Give directions: Practice giving simple directions from one place to another in Welsh.

  3. Play "where is it?": Hide an object and have someone ask "Ble mae...?" while you answer with location phrases.
