Conjunctions and Connectors in Welsh
Cysyllteiriau
Overview
Conjunctions and connectors are the glue that holds complex sentences together. At the A2 level, mastering common Welsh conjunctions allows you to express reasons, conditions, contrasts, and sequences — moving beyond simple sentences into more natural, flowing speech.
Some Welsh conjunctions trigger mutations, which is an important detail to learn alongside their meanings. The most frequently used conjunctions are "a/ac" (and), "ond" (but), "achos/oherwydd" (because), "pan" (when), "os" (if), and "felly" (so/therefore).
How It Works
Common Conjunctions
| Welsh | English | Mutation? |
|---|---|---|
| a / ac | and | Aspirate (of p, t, c) |
| ond | but | None |
| achos / oherwydd | because | None |
| pan | when | Soft mutation |
| os | if | None |
| er | although | None |
| felly | so, therefore | None |
| neu | or | Soft mutation |
| tra | while | None (with "bod") |
| cyn | before | Soft mutation (with "i") |
| ar ôl | after | None (with "i") |
"A" vs "Ac"
- "A" before consonants: bara a chaws (bread and cheese)
- "Ac" before vowels: te ac oren (tea and orange)
- "A" triggers aspirate mutation: c→ch, p→ph, t→th
Examples in Context
| Welsh | English | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Dw i'n mynd achos mae'n braf. | I'm going because it's fine. | Reason |
| Pan fydda i'n barod... | When I'm ready... | Time with mutation |
| Os wyt ti eisiau... | If you want... | Condition |
| Mae hi'n oer ond yn sych. | It's cold but dry. | Contrast |
| coffi a the | coffee and tea | "A" + aspirate: te → the |
| Dw i ddim yn dod, felly cer di. | I'm not coming, so you go. | Consequence |
| Mae e'n dal neu'n fyr? | Is he tall or short? | Alternative |
| Er bod hi'n oer, es i am dro. | Although it was cold, I went for a walk. | Concession |
| Cyn i fi fynd, rhaid gorffen. | Before I go, I must finish. | Sequence |
| Ar ôl bwyta, aethon ni am dro. | After eating, we went for a walk. | Sequence |
Common Mistakes
Forgetting aspirate mutation after "a"
- Wrong: bara a caws
- Right: bara a chaws
- Why: "A" (and) triggers aspirate mutation of p, t, and c.
Using "pan" without mutation
- Wrong: pan bydda i'n barod
- Right: pan fydda i'n barod
- Why: "Pan" triggers soft mutation of the following verb.
Confusing "achos" and "oherwydd"
- Wrong: Neither is wrong
- Right: Both mean "because." "Achos" is more colloquial, "oherwydd" more formal.
- Why: They are synonyms with different register levels.
Usage Notes
Welsh conjunctions operate somewhat differently from English in clause structure. For example, "pan" (when) requires the future tense form of "bod" when referring to future events: "pan fydda i'n barod" (when I will be ready), even though English uses the present tense.
"Er" (although) is often followed by "bod" constructions: "er bod hi'n oer" (although it is cold). This pattern is covered in more detail at B1-B2 levels.
Practice Tips
Combine simple sentences: Take two simple sentences and join them with different conjunctions to see how the meaning changes.
Focus on mutation triggers: Make a note of which conjunctions trigger mutations and practice them specifically.
Listen for conjunctions: In Welsh audio, listen for "ond," "achos," "os," and "pan" as anchors to understand sentence structure.
