Numeral Categories in Czech

Číslovkové Kategorie

Overview

Czech has a rich system of numeral types beyond basic cardinals and ordinals. At the CEFR B2 level, understanding collective, multiplicative, fractional, and indefinite numerals significantly expands your precision in quantifying and describing.

Collective numerals (dvoje, troje) are used with pluralia tantum nouns (nouns with only plural forms). Multiplicative numerals (dvakrát, třikrát) express "how many times." Fractional numerals (půl, třetina) express parts. Indefinite numerals (několik, mnoho) express approximate quantities. Each type has specific grammatical behavior.

How It Works

Collective Numerals

Used with pluralia tantum nouns (nouns that exist only in plural):

Numeral Used with Example
jedny pl. tantum jedny dveře (one door)
dvoje pl. tantum dvoje nůžky (two scissors)
troje pl. tantum troje boty (three pairs of shoes)
čtvery pl. tantum čtvery noviny (four newspapers)

Multiplicative Numerals

Czech English
jednou once
dvakrát twice
třikrát three times
čtyřikrát four times
pětkrát five times
mnohokrát many times

Fractional Numerals

Czech English
půl half
třetina a third
čtvrtina a quarter
pětina a fifth
desetina a tenth

Půl takes genitive: půl hodiny (half an hour), půl kilogramu (half a kilogram).

Numeral Agreement Rules

Czech numerals interact with noun case in complex ways:

Numeral Noun form Example
1 agrees (nom. sg.) jeden muž (one man)
2-4 nominative plural dva muži (two men)
5+ genitive plural pět mužů (five men)
několik genitive plural několik mužů (several men)
mnoho genitive plural mnoho lidí (many people)

This "numeral government" system (numerals determining the case of the following noun) is a fundamental Czech grammatical pattern. Numbers 5 and above behave as nouns themselves and require genitive plural, which is often the hardest case form to produce correctly.

Indefinite Numerals

Czech English Governs
několik several genitive pl.
mnoho many/much genitive pl.
málo few/little genitive pl.
hodně a lot genitive pl.
dost enough genitive pl.
kolik how many genitive pl.

Examples in Context

Czech English Note
dvoje dveře two doors collective + pl. tantum
třikrát za den three times a day multiplicative
půl hodiny half an hour fractional + genitive
několik lidí several people indefinite + genitive
jedny nůžky one pair of scissors collective
mnohokrát děkuji thank you very much multiplicative
třetina studentů a third of students fractional
hodně peněz a lot of money indefinite + genitive
kolik to stojí? how much does it cost? interrogative numeral
dvoje brýle two pairs of glasses collective

Common Pluralia Tantum Nouns

These nouns exist only in plural form and require collective numerals:

Czech English With numeral
dveře door(s) jedny/dvoje/troje dveře
nůžky scissors jedny/dvoje nůžky
brýle glasses jedny/dvoje brýle
noviny newspaper jedny/dvoje noviny
hodiny clock/watch jedny/dvoje hodiny
kalhoty trousers jedny/dvoje kalhoty
Vánoce Christmas jedny/dvoje Vánoce

This is a closed but important set of nouns that every Czech learner must master with the correct numeral forms.

Common Mistakes

Using cardinal numbers with pluralia tantum

  • Wrong: dva dveře
  • Right: dvoje dveře
  • Why: Pluralia tantum nouns require collective numerals, not standard cardinals.

Wrong case after půl

  • Wrong: půl hodina
  • Right: půl hodiny
  • Why: Půl governs the genitive case.

Confusing mnoho and hodně

  • Wrong: Mám mnoho rád. (mixing quantity and liking)
  • Right: Mám to hodně rád. or Mám mnoho přátel.
  • Why: Mnoho is more formal/literary and modifies nouns. Hodně is more colloquial and versatile.

Usage Notes

Collective numerals are obligatory with pluralia tantum nouns — this is not optional. Indefinite numerals all govern genitive plural, which is one of the hardest case forms in Czech. In colloquial speech, hodně replaces mnoho and málo replaces the literary nemnoho.

Practice Tips

  • List five pluralia tantum nouns you know and practice with collective numerals.
  • Practice -krát forms for numbers 1-10.
  • Make sentences with each indefinite numeral + a genitive plural noun.
