Academic Writing Style in Czech

Akademický Styl

Overview

Academic writing style in Czech follows specific conventions for hedging, attribution, impersonal construction, and formal argumentation. At the CEFR C1 level, mastering these conventions is essential for anyone writing academic papers, theses, or formal reports in Czech.

Czech academic style favors impersonal constructions (lze konstatovat — it can be stated), passive voice (bylo zjištěno — it was found), nominal phrases (z výsledků vyplývá — from the results it follows), and specific hedging expressions. First-person singular is generally avoided in favor of authorial "we" or impersonal forms.

Common Mistakes

Using first-person singular

  • Wrong: Myslím, že výsledky ukazují...
  • Right: Lze se domnívat, že výsledky ukazují...
  • Why: Czech academic style avoids (I). Use impersonal constructions or authorial my (we).

Informal hedging

  • Wrong: Asi to tak je. (colloquial "probably")
  • Right: Zdá se, že tomu tak je.
  • Why: Academic hedging uses formal expressions, not colloquial approximations.

Missing attribution

  • Wrong: Je známo, že... (without source)
  • Right: Jak uvádí Novák (2020), je známo, že...
  • Why: Academic Czech requires explicit attribution for claims.

Usage Notes

Czech academic style is more formal and impersonal than English academic writing. The trend toward more accessible academic writing is slower in Czech than in English. Theses and dissertations are expected to use this formal register consistently. Czech academic writing also uses longer sentences and more complex subordination than English.

The Authorial "We"

Czech academic writing avoids first-person singular. Options include:

Strategy Example Register
Authorial "we" Předkládáme hypotézu... (We present a hypothesis...) standard academic
Impersonal Lze předpokládat... (It can be assumed...) formal
Passive Bylo zjištěno... (It was found...) very formal
Indefinite subject Člověk by mohl říci... (One could say...) moderate

The authorial "we" (pluralis modestiae) is the most common strategy, even for single-author papers. First-person singular () is considered inappropriate in Czech academic discourse.

Practice Tips

  • Read Czech academic abstracts in your field and collect hedging expressions.
  • Practice rewriting informal descriptions as formal academic prose.
  • Write a paragraph presenting research findings using at least five formal connectors.
