Past Tense Contrast in Catalan
Contrast entre Temps Passats
Overview
Catalan uses three main past tenses, each serving a different function: the periphrastic past (vaig cantar) for completed events, the present perfect (he cantat) for recent or relevant past, and the imperfect (cantava) for habitual or descriptive past. At the B1 level, understanding when to choose each one is crucial for clear, natural narration.
The periphrastic past is the default narrative past tense, used for one-time completed actions. The present perfect connects past events to the present moment. The imperfect provides background information, describes ongoing states, and expresses habitual past actions. In any story or conversation about the past, you will weave these three tenses together.
Mastering this contrast is what separates intermediate speakers from beginners. The rules are logical once you understand the function of each tense.
How It Works
Tense Functions
| Tense | Function | Signal words |
|---|---|---|
| Periphrastic past | Completed events | ahir, l'any passat, un dia |
| Present perfect | Recent past / present relevance | avui, aquest matí, ja, encara no |
| Imperfect | Habitual / descriptive / background | sempre, cada dia, quan era petit |
Combining Tenses in Narration
| Pattern | Example |
|---|---|
| Background (imperfect) + Event (periphrastic) | Plovia quan vaig sortir. (It was raining when I went out.) |
| Habitual (imperfect) + Single event (periphrastic) | Sempre anava en bus, però ahir vaig anar en taxi. |
| Recent (perfect) + Distant (periphrastic) | Avui he vist en Pere. Vaig conèixer-lo fa cinc anys. |
Examples in Context
| Catalan | English | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Vaig néixer a Lleida. | I was born in Lleida. | Completed fact — periphrastic |
| Avui he anat al metge. | Today I went to the doctor. | Recent — present perfect |
| Quan era jove, llegia molt. | When I was young, I used to read a lot. | Habitual — imperfect |
| Plovia quan vaig sortir. | It was raining when I went out. | Background + event |
| Hem acabat la feina. | We have finished the work. | Present relevance |
| Sempre menjava a les dues. | I always used to eat at two. | Habitual |
| Va arribar, va seure i va demanar un cafè. | He arrived, sat down, and ordered a coffee. | Sequence — periphrastic |
| Era un dia bonic. No feia vent. | It was a beautiful day. There was no wind. | Description — imperfect |
| Ja has vist la pel·lícula? | Have you seen the film already? | Current relevance |
| Estava content perquè havia aprovat. | He was happy because he had passed. | State + reason |
Common Mistakes
Using imperfect for completed single events
- Wrong: Ahir anava al cinema. (for a single trip)
- Right: Ahir vaig anar al cinema.
- Why: Single completed events use the periphrastic past. The imperfect would mean "I was going" (background) or "I used to go" (habitual).
Using periphrastic past for background description
- Wrong: Vaig ploure quan vaig sortir.
- Right: Plovia quan vaig sortir.
- Why: Rain as a background condition uses the imperfect, not the periphrastic past.
Using present perfect for distant past events
- Wrong: He néixer a Lleida. (distant biographical fact)
- Right: Vaig néixer a Lleida.
- Why: The present perfect is for recent events or those with current relevance. Distant biographical facts use the periphrastic past.
Usage Notes
The boundary between present perfect and periphrastic past varies by dialect. In Central Catalan (Barcelona), the distinction is well maintained: present perfect for "today" and recent events, periphrastic past for "yesterday" and beyond. In Valencian Catalan, the simple past may be used more broadly. For standard usage, follow the Central pattern.
Practice Tips
- Tell a story about yesterday using all three tenses: "Ahir era diumenge (imperfect). Feia sol (imperfect). Vaig anar a la platja (periphrastic). Avui he vist les fotos (perfect)."
- Practice converting: take a sentence in one tense and think about what it would mean in the other two. "Anava al cinema" → "Vaig anar al cinema" → "He anat al cinema."
- Read a short Catalan text and identify each past tense. Ask yourself: why did the author choose this tense here?
