Colours in Catalan

Overview

Colour words in Catalan are adjectives, which means they follow the standard rules of adjective agreement: they must match the noun they describe in gender and number. Most colour adjectives have four forms (masculine/feminine, singular/plural), though a few are invariable.

Learning colours at the A1 level is practical for describing objects, clothing, and the world around you. Most Catalan colour words have distinct masculine and feminine forms, which provides good practice for adjective agreement.

Some colour words have special spelling changes in their feminine or plural forms, particularly those ending in consonant clusters. Once you learn these patterns, colour adjectives become reliable building blocks for description.

How It Works

Colour Adjectives with Agreement

Colour Masc. sg. Fem. sg. Masc. pl. Fem. pl.
black negre negra negres negres
white blanc blanca blancs blanques
red vermell vermella vermells vermelles
blue blau blava blaus blaves
yellow groc groga grocs grogues
green verd verda verds verdes
brown marró marró marrons marrons
grey gris grisa grisos grises
pink rosa rosa roses roses
orange taronja taronja taronges taronges
purple lila / morat lila / morada liles / morats liles / morades

Notes on Agreement

  • Invariable colours: rosa, taronja, lila — these do not change for gender, only add plural
  • Regular four-form: negre/a, vermell/a, blau/blava, verd/a
  • Spelling changes: blanc → blanques (f.pl.), groc → grogues (f.pl.)

Examples in Context

Catalan English Note
un cotxe vermell a red car Masculine singular
una camisa blava a blue shirt Feminine singular
els ulls verds the green eyes Masculine plural
les flors grogues the yellow flowers Feminine plural
El cel és blau. The sky is blue. Predicate adjective
La paret és blanca. The wall is white. Feminine predicate
Porta una jaqueta negra. He/she wears a black jacket. Feminine agreement
Tinc unes sabates marrons. I have some brown shoes. Invariable (marró)
Una rosa rosa. A pink rose. Same word, different functions
Les fulles són verdes a l'estiu. The leaves are green in summer. Feminine plural

Common Mistakes

Forgetting feminine forms for blau

  • Wrong: una camisa blau
  • Right: una camisa blava
  • Why: "Blau" has an irregular feminine form "blava" (not "blaua").

Applying agreement to invariable colours

  • Wrong: una taula taronje
  • Right: una taula taronja
  • Why: "Taronja" (orange) does not change for gender. It only changes for number: taronges.

Missing spelling changes in feminine plural

  • Wrong: les parets blancs
  • Right: les parets blanques
  • Why: The feminine plural of "blanc" is "blanques" (not "blancs" or "blances").

Practice Tips

  1. Look around your room and describe five objects with their colours: "El meu telèfon és negre. La meva taula és blanca. Els meus llibres són verds."
  2. Practice the tricky forms: blau/blava, groc/groga, blanc/blanca. These are the ones most likely to trip you up.
  3. Go shopping (or window shopping) and describe what you see: "Una camisa vermella, uns pantalons blaus, unes sabates negres."
