Verb Forms IV and V in Arabic

الأفعال: الرابع والخامس

Overview

Forms IV and V continue the system of derived verb forms in Arabic, each with its own characteristic pattern and meaning. Form IV (أَفْعَلَ) adds a hamza prefix and typically creates causative or transitive meanings. Form V (تَفَعَّلَ) adds a تَـ prefix to the Form II pattern and usually conveys a reflexive or gradual meaning of the Form II action.

At the A2 level, these forms significantly expand your ability to express cause-and-effect relationships and reflexive actions. Form IV is one of the most productive derived forms in Arabic, creating many common everyday verbs. Form V often expresses "doing something to oneself" or undergoing a process, making it the natural partner of Form II.

Understanding the relationship between Forms II and V is particularly useful: if Form II means "to teach" (عَلَّمَ), Form V means "to learn" (تَعَلَّمَ) -- the reflexive of teaching is learning.

Common Mistakes

Wrong Right Why
Dropping the hamza in Form IV Always including the أ prefix: أَخرج not خرج for Form IV The hamza-alif is the defining feature of Form IV
Confusing Form V present tense with Form II Checking for the تَـ prefix: يتعلَّم (V) vs. يُعلِّم (II) Form V always has تَـ in both past and present
Wrong vowel pattern in Form IV present Using يُفْعِلُ pattern: يُرسِلُ not يَرسِلُ Form IV present has damma on the prefix
Missing the Form II-V relationship Recognizing V as reflexive of II systematically This pairing is one of the most productive in Arabic
