Verb Forms II and III in Arabic
الأفعال: الثاني والثالث
Overview
Derived verb forms are one of Arabic's most powerful features. Forms II and III are built from the basic Form I root by modifying the pattern, and each carries predictable meaning shifts. Form II (فَعَّلَ) doubles the middle radical and typically conveys intensification, causation, or making something happen. Form III (فاعَلَ) lengthens the first vowel and usually indicates doing an action toward or with someone.
At the A2 level, learning these two forms dramatically expands your vocabulary. If you know that درس means "to study," you can predict that درَّس (Form II) means "to teach" (to cause someone to study) and that the pattern is consistent across roots. Similarly, Form III often carries a reciprocal or directed meaning: كتب (to write) becomes كاتَب (to correspond with someone).
These forms have predictable patterns for their present tense, verbal noun (masdar), and participles, which makes them highly systematic once you learn the basic templates.
Formation
Form II Pattern: فَعَّلَ
Form II is created by doubling (geminating) the second radical of the root:
| Feature | Pattern | Example (د-ر-س) |
|---|---|---|
| Past | فَعَّلَ | دَرَّسَ (he taught) |
| Present | يُفَعِّلُ | يُدَرِّسُ (he teaches) |
| Verbal noun | تَفْعيل | تَدْريس (teaching) |
| Active participle | مُفَعِّل | مُدَرِّس (teacher) |
| Passive participle | مُفَعَّل | مُدَرَّس (taught) |
Common Form II Meanings
| Meaning Shift | Base → Form II | Translation |
|---|---|---|
| Causative | عَلِمَ (to know) → عَلَّمَ | to teach (make someone know) |
| Intensification | كَسَرَ (to break) → كَسَّرَ | to smash (break intensely) |
| Denominative | لَوْن (color) → لَوَّنَ | to color (make into color) |
Form III Pattern: فاعَلَ
Form III lengthens the vowel after the first radical:
| Feature | Pattern | Example (ك-ت-ب) |
|---|---|---|
| Past | فاعَلَ | كاتَبَ (he corresponded with) |
| Present | يُفاعِلُ | يُكاتِبُ (he corresponds with) |
| Verbal noun | مُفاعَلة or فِعال | مُكاتَبة (correspondence) |
| Active participle | مُفاعِل | مُكاتِب (correspondent) |
Common Form III Meanings
| Meaning Shift | Base → Form III | Translation |
|---|---|---|
| Doing to someone | كَتَبَ → كاتَبَ | to correspond with |
| Trying/attempting | سَبَقَ → سابَقَ | to race (try to outrun) |
| Reciprocal | قَتَلَ → قاتَلَ | to fight (try to kill each other) |
Examples in Context
| Arabic | English | Note |
|---|---|---|
| درس → درَّس (II) | to study → to teach | Causative |
| علم → علَّم (II) | to know → to teach/inform | Causative |
| كسر → كسَّر (II) | to break → to smash | Intensification |
| فتش → فتَّش (II) | to examine → to search thoroughly | Intensification |
| نظف → نظَّف (II) | to be clean → to clean | Causative |
| كتب → كاتَب (III) | to write → to correspond with | Directed action |
| سافر (III) | to travel | Form III from س-ف-ر |
| حاول (III) | to try/attempt | Directed effort |
| ساعد (III) | to help | Directed action |
| شارك (III) | to participate | Mutual involvement |
Common Mistakes
| Wrong | Right | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Using Form I when Form II is needed for causation | Using Form II for causative meaning: علَّم not علم for 'to teach' | Form I is the base meaning; Form II adds causation |
| Confusing Form II and Form III patterns | Checking for doubled middle radical (II) vs. long first vowel (III) | فَعَّلَ has شَدَّة on middle letter; فاعَلَ has long alif |
| Wrong present-tense prefix vowel | Using يُـ (damma) for Forms II and III present tense | Both Forms II and III use يُ as the present-tense prefix |
| Forgetting that Form III often needs a direct object (person) | Including the person acted upon: كاتَبَ صديقَه | Form III is typically transitive, directed at someone |
Practice Tips
- Create a root expansion chart: take a root like ع-ل-م and write out Form I (عَلِمَ, to know), Form II (عَلَّمَ, to teach), and Form III (عالَمَ, to deal with). Seeing the family together reinforces the patterns.
- Focus on the most common Form II and Form III verbs first: درَّس, علَّم, كلَّم, نظَّف for Form II; سافَر, ساعَد, حاوَل, شارَك for Form III. These appear in everyday conversation.
- Practice identifying Forms II and III in Arabic texts by looking for the doubled middle letter or the long alif after the first radical.
