Present Tense (Imperfect) in Arabic
الفعل المضارع
Overview
The present tense in Arabic, called الفعل المضارع (al-fi'l al-mudaari'), describes ongoing, habitual, or future actions. Unlike the past tense which uses suffixes only, the present tense uses a combination of prefixes and suffixes to indicate the subject. It is the second essential tense you will learn at the A1 level.
The present tense is formed from the same root as the past tense but with a different vowel pattern and the addition of subject-marking prefixes: أ (I), تـ (you/she), يـ (he/they), نـ (we). The stem vowel (the vowel on the second radical) can be u, i, or a, and must be learned with each verb.
This tense is also the base for several other forms: the future tense (with سـ or سوف), the subjunctive, and the jussive. Mastering it opens the door to expressing a wide range of meanings.

Common Stem Vowel Patterns
| Past | Present | Example |
|---|---|---|
| فَعَلَ (a) | يَفْعُلُ (u) | كَتَبَ → يَكْتُبُ (write) |
| فَعَلَ (a) | يَفْعِلُ (i) | جَلَسَ → يَجْلِسُ (sit) |
| فَعِلَ (i) | يَفْعَلُ (a) | شَرِبَ → يَشْرَبُ (drink) |
Examples in Context
| Arabic | English | Note |
|---|---|---|
| يَكْتُبُ (yaktubu) | he writes/is writing | Prefix يـ for "he" |
| أَكْتُبُ (aktubu) | I write | Prefix أ for "I" |
| تَذْهَبُ (tadh'habu) | you go / she goes | Prefix تـ is shared |
| نَدْرُسُ (nadrusu) | we study | Prefix نـ for "we" |
| يقرأون الكتاب. | They are reading the book. | Masculine plural |
| أفهم العربية. | I understand Arabic. | Habitual action |
| تعمل في شركة. | She works at a company. | Ongoing state |
| نأكل في المطعم. | We eat at the restaurant. | Habitual action |
| ماذا تفعل؟ | What are you doing? | Common question |
| يدرسون كل يوم. | They study every day. | Habitual with time expression |
Common Mistakes
| Wrong | Right | Why |
|---|---|---|
| أنا كتب (past form for present) | أنا أكتب | Present tense requires the أ prefix |
| يكتب for "they write" | يكتبون | Plural requires the ون suffix |
| Confusing تكتب (you m/she) | Using context or adding a pronoun | These forms are identical; context disambiguates |
| Wrong stem vowel: يَكْتِب | يَكْتُب | The stem vowel must be memorized for each verb |
Practice Tips
- Learn each new verb as a past-present pair: كَتَبَ / يَكْتُب, ذَهَبَ / يَذْهَب, شَرِبَ / يَشْرَب. The stem vowel is unpredictable, so memorize it.
- Practice describing your daily routine using present tense: أستيقظ الساعة سبعة, أذهب إلى العمل, آكل الغداء.
- Pay attention to the prefix: أ for "I," نـ for "we," تـ for "you/she," يـ for "he/they."
