Ordinal Numbers in Arabic

الأعداد الترتيبية

Overview

Ordinal numbers in Arabic (الأعداد الترتيبية) follow the فاعِل (faa'il) pattern for numbers 1st through 10th: أوّل (first), ثانٍ (second), ثالث (third), etc. Unlike cardinal numbers with their reverse gender agreement, ordinals follow normal adjective agreement -- they agree in gender with the noun they describe.

At the B1 level, ordinal numbers are used for ranking, sequencing, and describing order. They typically appear with the definite article and follow the noun: الكتاب الأوّل (the first book), المرة الثانية (the second time). The word أوّل (first) is special and can also precede the noun in an idafa construction: أول مرة (the first time).

For numbers beyond tenth, Arabic uses cardinal numbers instead of ordinals: الصفحة خمسة عشر (page fifteen, not "fifteenth").

How It Works

Ordinal pattern أَوَّل, ثاني, ثالث... following فاعِل pattern for 1st-10th. Agree in gender with noun. Used with definite article.
