Jussive Mood in Arabic

المضارع المجزوم

Overview

The jussive mood (المضارع المجزوم) is the third mood of the Arabic imperfect verb, alongside the indicative and subjunctive. It is characterized by a sukun (no vowel) on the final consonant. The jussive is triggered by specific particles: لم (did not, past negation), لا (for negative commands), لمّا (not yet), and conditional particles like إن and من.

At the B1 level, the jussive is important because لم + jussive is the standard way to negate the past in formal Arabic: لم يذهب (he didn't go). It is also used for negative commands: لا تفعل (don't do it). The jussive mood affects the "five verbs" (those ending in ون or ان or ين) by dropping the final ن.

Mastering the jussive completes your understanding of the three moods of the Arabic imperfect verb.

How It Works

Jussive (مجزوم) after لم (didn't), لا (negative command), certain conditionals. Final vowel dropped or shortened. Important for negation and commands.
