Basic Adverbs in Arabic

الظروف الأساسية

Overview

Arabic adverbs (الظروف) modify verbs, adjectives, or entire sentences to express manner, time, place, frequency, and degree. Unlike English, Arabic does not have a standard adverb-forming suffix like "-ly." Instead, many adverbs are formed by using the accusative case of nouns or adjectives.

At the A1 level, learning common adverbs greatly expands your expressive range. Key adverbs include: جدًّا (very), كثيرًا (a lot/much), قليلاً (a little), دائمًا (always), أبدًا (never), أحيانًا (sometimes), هنا (here), هناك (there), الآن (now), and بسرعة (quickly).

Many Arabic adverbs end in the accusative tanwin (ًا), which reflects their grammatical origin as accusative nouns functioning adverbially. This explains their characteristic sound.
