Active Participle in Arabic
اسم الفاعل
This article is part of the Arabic grammar tree on Settemila Lingue.
Overview
The active participle (اسم الفاعل) is a noun/adjective form derived from a verb that describes the person or thing performing an action. It is one of the most commonly used derived forms in Arabic, appearing in everyday vocabulary as both adjectives and nouns. In English, it corresponds roughly to "-er" or "-ing" forms: "writer," "driving."
At the A2 level, learning the active participle pattern opens a huge door to vocabulary building. The Form I active participle follows the pattern فاعِل (faa'il), which you will recognize in countless common words: كاتِب (writer), طالِب (student, literally "seeker"), سائِق (driver), عامِل (worker).
Derived forms (II-X) have their own active participle patterns, all beginning with مُـ (mu-). Once you learn these patterns, you can predict the active participle of almost any verb.

| طالب (ṭaalib) | student (one who seeks) | Very common word |

Common Mistakes
| Wrong | Right | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Confusing active and passive participles | Active = فاعِل (doer); Passive = مَفعول (done to) | كاتِب = writer; مَكتوب = written |
| Wrong pattern for derived forms | Using مُـ prefix for all forms II-X | Only Form I uses فاعِل; all others start with مُـ |
| Using active participle where verb is needed | Understanding that active participles describe states, not ongoing actions | أنا كاتب (I am a writer/writing) vs. أنا أكتب (I am writing right now) |
Practice Tips
- When learning new verbs, always learn the active participle alongside the past and present tense forms. This triples your vocabulary from each root.
- Recognize فاعِل pattern words in everyday Arabic: كاتب, طالب, سائق, عامل, حاكم, قائد. These are among the most common nouns in the language.
- For derived forms, the مُـ prefix is your signal. Train yourself to spot it and then identify which form the word belongs to.
