Infinitive Constructions in Swedish
Infinitivkonstruktioner

In Brief
Swedish builds useful adverb-like phrases with att + infinitive (the basic verb form): för att expresses purpose, utan att expresses what does not happen, genom att expresses method, and i stället för att presents an alternative. Put inte before the infinitive when the action is negative: för att inte störa (“so as not to disturb”).
Overview
An infinitive is the basic form of a verb, such as läsa (“read”), göra (“do”), or förstå (“understand”). Swedish often places the infinitive marker att before it, much as English uses “to” in to read. At B2, this basic pattern becomes part of longer constructions that explain the purpose, method, absence, or alternative connected with another action.
These compact phrases are extremely common in both speech and writing. Compare Hon ringde (“She called”) with Hon ringde för att boka en tid (“She called to book an appointment”). The second sentence tells you why she called without adding a fully conjugated second clause.
English does not map onto these patterns word for word. English may use “to,” “in order to,” a preposition plus an -ing form, or a separate clause. Swedish keeps the infinitive after att in all the central constructions here: utan att säga (“without saying”), not a form corresponding to English “saying.”
How It Works
The basic shape
The central structure is:
main clause + linking expression + att + infinitive phrase
In Jag stannade för att hjälpa till, the main clause (the part that can stand as a sentence) is Jag stannade. The phrase för att hjälpa till adds the purpose. The infinitive hjälpa does not change for person or tense; the finite verb stannade carries the tense.
| Meaning | Swedish pattern | Typical English equivalent |
|---|---|---|
| Purpose | för att + infinitive | to, in order to |
| An action that is absent or avoided | utan att + infinitive | without doing |
| Method or means | genom att + infinitive | by doing |
| Rejected alternative | i stället för att + infinitive | instead of doing |
| Evaluation or reaction | det är + adjective + att + infinitive | it is … to do |
Both i stället and the one-word spelling istället occur. The construction works the same way with either spelling.
Purpose with för att
Use för att + infinitive when an action is performed with a goal:
- Vi åkte tidigt för att slippa trafiken. — “We left early to avoid the traffic.”
- Jag skriver ner det för att komma ihåg det. — “I write it down so that I remember it.”
The understood subject of the infinitive is normally the same as the subject of the main clause. In Sara gick ut för att ringa, Sara both went out and made the call.
This matters when the two actions have different subjects. Swedish then normally uses a full clause, often with skulle:
- Jag öppnade dörren för att komma in. — “I opened the door in order to come in.” (I come in.)
- Jag öppnade dörren för att hon skulle kunna komma in. — “I opened the door so that she could come in.” (She comes in.)
In the second example, hon skulle kunna komma in has its own stated subject and conjugated verb phrase. It is therefore not an infinitive construction, even though it begins with för att.
Do not confuse purpose för att with causal för att, meaning “because” in some contexts: Jag stannade hemma för att jag var sjuk (“I stayed home because I was ill”). A following subject plus finite verb signals a full clause, not att + infinitive.
Absence or avoidance with utan att
Use utan att + infinitive to say that one action occurs while another expected or possible action does not:
- Han gick utan att säga hej då. — “He left without saying goodbye.”
- Hon svarade utan att tveka. — “She answered without hesitating.”
As with för att, the omitted subject is usually understood from the main clause. In Hon svarade utan att tveka, it is she who does not hesitate.
The construction can also describe a result achieved without a particular method: Du kan öppna filen utan att installera något (“You can open the file without installing anything”).
Method with genom att
Use genom att + infinitive to explain how or by what means something happens:
- Man lär sig nya ord genom att läsa mycket. — “You learn new words by reading a lot.”
- Vi minskade kostnaderna genom att byta leverantör. — “We reduced costs by changing supplier.”
The difference between purpose and method is useful:
- Hon tränar för att bli starkare. — Becoming stronger is the goal.
- Hon blir starkare genom att träna. — Training is the method.
English “by” is not translated separately; the whole expression is genom att.
Alternatives with i stället för att
Use i stället för att + infinitive when one action replaces another:
- Vi tog tåget i stället för att flyga. — “We took the train instead of flying.”
- I stället för att klaga försökte hon lösa problemet. — “Instead of complaining, she tried to solve the problem.”
The phrase can follow the main clause or come first. When it comes first, it sets the contrast as the frame for the whole sentence. In either position, the understood subject should normally be clear and should match the person performing the main action.
Evaluations with det är … att
Swedish often uses formal det as an introductory subject in patterns such as det är + adjective + att + infinitive. Here, det does not refer to a particular object; it prepares for the infinitive phrase:
- Det är svårt att förstå. — “It is difficult to understand.”
- Det var roligt att träffa er. — “It was nice to meet you.”
- Det kan vara farligt att köra för fort. — “It can be dangerous to drive too fast.”
The adjective gives an evaluation: svårt (difficult), lätt (easy), viktigt (important), roligt (fun/nice), or farligt (dangerous). The person concerned may be left general or supplied with a phrase such as för mig: Det är svårt för mig att förklara (“It is difficult for me to explain”).
Negation and other short adverbs
In these infinitive phrases, inte normally stands after att and before the infinitive:
- för att inte väcka barnen — “so as not to wake the children”
- utan att egentligen förstå — “without really understanding”
- genom att alltid kontrollera detaljerna — “by always checking the details”
This order is worth learning as a unit: att inte göra, not inte att göra in a neutral infinitive phrase. Other short sentence adverbs (words commenting on the action), such as alltid, aldrig, and verkligen, commonly occupy the same area before the infinitive.
Position in the sentence
An infinitive phrase can come after the main clause or before it:
- Jag tog en promenad för att få lite luft.
- För att få lite luft tog jag en promenad.
When the phrase comes first, Swedish main-clause word order still applies after it: the finite verb comes before the subject. Thus För att få lite luft tog jag en promenad, not för att få lite luft jag tog …. This is the Swedish V2 rule: in a main statement, the finite verb occupies the second structural position.
Examples in Context
| Swedish | English | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Jag kom för att hjälpa. | I came (in order) to help. | Purpose; the speaker does both actions. |
| Hon sparar pengar för att kunna resa i sommar. | She is saving money so she can travel this summer. | A modal infinitive can follow: kunna resa. |
| För att hinna med bussen sprang vi hela vägen. | To catch the bus, we ran all the way. | Initial purpose phrase; note sprang vi. |
| Stäng dörren försiktigt för att inte väcka barnet. | Close the door carefully so as not to wake the child. | Inte precedes the infinitive. |
| Han gick utan att säga hej då. | He left without saying goodbye. | An expected action did not happen. |
| De fattade beslutet utan att först fråga personalen. | They made the decision without first asking the staff. | Först modifies the infinitive action. |
| Du kan prova funktionen utan att skapa ett konto. | You can try the feature without creating an account. | Something is possible without a condition. |
| Vi löste problemet genom att starta om datorn. | We solved the problem by restarting the computer. | Method or means. |
| Hon förbättrade sitt uttal genom att lyssna och härma. | She improved her pronunciation by listening and imitating. | Two coordinated infinitives. |
| I stället för att mejla ringde jag direkt. | Instead of emailing, I called directly. | Alternative phrase placed first. |
| De stannade hemma i stället för att gå på festen. | They stayed home instead of going to the party. | The subjects of both actions are the same. |
| Det är svårt att förstå varför planen ändrades. | It is difficult to understand why the plan changed. | Introductory det plus an evaluation. |
| Det var trevligt att träffa dig igen. | It was nice to see you again. | Reaction to an experience. |
| Det är viktigt för oss att alla känner sig välkomna. | It is important to us that everyone feels welcome. | Here att introduces a full clause with its own subject. |
The final two examples highlight an important contrast. Att träffa dig is an infinitive phrase, while att alla känner sig välkomna contains the subject alla and the finite verb känner and is therefore a full subordinate clause.
Common Mistakes
Dropping att after the linking expression
- Wrong: Hon gick utan säga något.
- Right: Hon gick utan att säga något.
- Why: Utan, genom, and i stället för need att before an infinitive in these constructions. English “without saying” can tempt you to omit it.
Using a present-tense verb after att
- Wrong: Jag ringde för att bokar en tid.
- Right: Jag ringde för att boka en tid.
- Why: The verb after infinitive att stays in the infinitive. Here boka is the infinitive; bokar is present tense.
Giving the infinitive an unintended subject
- Unclear/wrong meaning: Jag öppnade fönstret för att hon skulle få frisk luft cannot be reduced to Jag öppnade fönstret för att få frisk luft if she, not I, needs the air.
- Right: Jag öppnade fönstret för att hon skulle få frisk luft.
- Why: A purpose infinitive normally inherits the main-clause subject. Use a full clause when the intended subject changes.
Putting inte in the wrong place
- Wrong: Vi gick tidigt för att missa inte tåget.
- Right: Vi gick tidigt för att inte missa tåget.
- Why: In a neutral infinitive phrase, place inte before the infinitive: att inte missa.
Forgetting inversion after an initial phrase
- Wrong: För att spara tid vi tog en taxi.
- Right: För att spara tid tog vi en taxi.
- Why: Once the purpose phrase occupies the first position, the finite verb comes next under Swedish V2 word order.
Confusing goal and method
- Awkward for the intended meaning: Jag läser svenska genom att få ett jobb i Sverige.
- Better: Jag läser svenska för att få ett jobb i Sverige.
- Why: Getting a job is the goal, so use för att. Use genom att for the method: Jag lär mig svenska genom att prata med kollegor.
Usage Notes
In everyday speech, plain för att is natural even where English might choose either “to” or the more formal “in order to.” Swedish does not need a heavier expression merely because the purpose is important. In formal writing, these constructions are especially useful for showing logical relationships clearly: goal (för att), means (genom att), omitted action (utan att), and alternative (i stället för att).
The spelling pair i stället/istället does not change meaning. Be consistent within a piece of writing. You will also hear reductions in rapid speech, but standard written Swedish keeps the full words and att.
Swedish att has more than one job. It can be an infinitive marker before a basic verb (att läsa), or a conjunction introducing a clause (att hon läser). A practical test is to look immediately after it: an infinitive points to the first use, while an explicit subject and a tense-marked verb point to the second.
Beyond the Basics
Modal verbs inside the phrase
A linking construction may contain a modal verb followed by a bare infinitive. Only the first infinitive marker is used:
- för att kunna delta — “in order to be able to participate”
- utan att vilja erkänna det — “without wanting to admit it”
Do not add another att after a modal: not för att kunna att delta. The same rule applies to common modal verbs outside these constructions: kan delta, måste gå, vill förstå.
Coordinated infinitives
Two infinitives can share one att when they form a coordinated pair:
- Hon försökte att lyssna och förstå. — “She tried to listen and understand.”
- Genom att jämföra priser och läsa recensioner hittade vi ett bättre alternativ. — “By comparing prices and reading reviews, we found a better option.”
Repeating att is possible when it helps mark separate or contrasting actions, but it is often unnecessary when the verbs belong closely together.
An infinitive phrase can carry substantial information
The infinitive itself does not show tense, but the phrase can still contain objects, adverbs, particles, and complements:
För att snabbt kunna fatta ett välgrundat beslut behöver vi mer information.
Here the core is fatta (“make”), but snabbt, the modal kunna, and the object ett välgrundat beslut all belong to the infinitive phrase. The main verb behöver sets the sentence in the present. Context, rather than the infinitive form, tells you when its action is expected to occur.
Avoiding dangling introductory phrases
In careful writing, make sure the understood performer of an initial infinitive phrase matches the main-clause subject:
- Illogical: För att spara tid skickades formuläret automatiskt. — Literally, the form was sent automatically “in order [for the form] to save time.”
- Clear: För att spara tid skickade vi formuläret automatiskt. — “To save time, we sent the form automatically.”
A passive sentence can hide the person who has the purpose. Rewriting with an explicit subject often makes the logic clearer.
Practice Tips
- Sort examples by relationship. Take short sentences from Swedish news, emails, or podcasts and label each phrase “goal,” “method,” “missing action,” or “alternative.” This trains the contrast between för att and genom att.
- Transform pairs of sentences. Combine Jag gick till biblioteket. Jag ville låna en bok as Jag gick till biblioteket för att låna en bok. Then try a changed subject and notice why you need a full clause.
- Practise fronting and negation. Rewrite Vi viskade för att inte störa as För att inte störa viskade vi. Check both att inte + infinitive and verb-before-subject order.
