喺 (At, In, On) in Cantonese

介詞「喺」

This article is part of the Cantonese grammar tree on Settemila Lingue.

In Brief

Use (hai2) to locate someone, something, or an action: 我喺屋企 means “I’m at home,” and 我喺屋企食飯 means “I eat at home.” English divides this job among at, in, and on, but Cantonese normally uses plus a place; a location word such as 上面 (“on top”) supplies any more precise spatial meaning.

Overview

(hai2) is the everyday Cantonese location word behind many translations containing at, in, or on. You use it to say where a person or thing is and where an event happens. It is one of the first location patterns learned at A1 because it appears in introductions, travel questions, plans, and ordinary statements such as “I’m at work” or “The keys are on the table.”

A preposition is a word placed before a location to connect that location to the rest of a sentence. In 我喺香港做嘢 (“I work in Hong Kong”), 喺香港 tells you where the work happens. When 喺 + place is the main statement, as in 我喺香港 (“I’m in Hong Kong”), also behaves like a location verb. You do not need to choose a grammatical label before using it: the practical pattern is the same.

English speakers need to change one habit. Do not look for three separate Cantonese words corresponding exactly to at, in, and on. Start with , then add a place or a more exact position: 喺學校 “at school,” 喺房入面 “in the room,” and 喺枱上面 “on the table.”

How It Works

The beginner rule: person or thing + 喺 + place

The simplest pattern states a static location—a place where something is, rather than a destination it is moving toward.

Pattern Function Example
subject + 喺 + place says where someone or something is 我喺屋企。 “I’m at home.”
subject + 唔喺 + place says where someone or something is not 佢唔喺公司。 “She isn’t at the office.”
subject + 喺唔喺 + place? asks whether someone or something is there 你喺唔喺學校? “Are you at school?”
subject + 喺邊度? asks for a location 你喺邊度? “Where are you?”

The subject is the person or thing the sentence is about. Cantonese does not change for person, number, or tense. The same form works with “I,” “they,” one object, or several objects. Time is normally understood from context or stated with a time expression.

  • 我而家喺屋企。 — I’m at home now.
  • 我琴日喺屋企。 — I was at home yesterday.
  • 我聽日會喺屋企。 — I’ll be at home tomorrow.

Locating an action: subject + 喺 + place + action

When the sentence includes an action, put 喺 + place before the verb phrase (the verb and the words that complete its meaning):

subject + 喺 + place + verb phrase

  • 我喺屋企食飯。 — I eat at home.
  • 佢喺圖書館溫書。 — She studies at the library.
  • 我哋喺門口等你。 — We’ll wait for you at the entrance.

This differs from common English order. English can place the location after the action—“I study at the library”—but neutral Cantonese usually presents the setting before the action: 我喺圖書館溫書.

A time expression usually comes before the location:

subject + time + 喺 + place + action

  • 我聽日喺公司開會。 — I have a meeting at the office tomorrow.
  • 佢朝早喺公園跑步。 — He runs in the park in the morning.

Adding precise position words

A bare place name may be enough: 喺香港, 喺學校, 喺屋企. To express inside, on top of, under, or another spatial relationship, add a location word after the reference place.

Cantonese form Jyutping Usual English meaning
喺房入面 hai2 fong2 jap6 min2 in/inside the room
喺枱上面 hai2 toi2 soeng6 min2 on the table
喺枱下面 hai2 toi2 haa6 min2 under the table
喺門口前面 hai2 mun4 hau2 cin4 min2 in front of the entrance
喺屋後面 hai2 uk1 hau6 min2 behind the house
喺銀行隔籬 hai2 ngan4 hong4 gaak3 lei4 next to the bank

This structure is more literal than an English preposition alone: 枱上面 is “the table’s upper side,” so 喺枱上面 means “at the upper side of the table,” naturally translated as “on the table.” In everyday speech, shorter forms such as 枱上 may also occur, but the full 上面, 下面, and 入面 forms are clear beginner choices.

Here, there, and where

(dou6) forms general place words with demonstratives and the question word :

Form Jyutping Meaning
呢度 ni1 dou6 here
嗰度 go2 dou6 there
邊度 bin1 dou6 where
喺呢度 hai2 ni1 dou6 be here / at this place
喺嗰度 hai2 go2 dou6 be there / at that place
喺邊度? hai2 bin1 dou6 be where?

Use 邊度 in the same position where an answer would put the place. 你喺邊度? asks where you are; the answer can be 我喺屋企 or simply 喺屋企 when “I” is obvious.

喺 is not 係

These two very common words sound similar but have different tones, characters, and jobs.

Form Jyutping Core job Example
hai2 location: be at/in/on 我喺學校。 “I’m at school.”
hai6 identity or classification: be 我係學生。 “I’m a student.”

Use to connect someone or something with an identity, class, or description expressed as a noun: “I am a student.” Use to connect it with a place: “I am at school.” English uses be in both sentences, but Cantonese does not.

Common Mistakes

Using 係 for a physical location

  • Wrong: 我係屋企。
  • Right: 我喺屋企。
  • Why: (hai6) identifies what someone or something is; (hai2) says where it is. English am/is/are hides this distinction.

Using 喺 for identity

  • Wrong: 佢喺老師。
  • Right: 佢係老師。
  • Why: “Teacher” is an identity or classification, not a location, so it requires .

Translating English word order directly

  • Awkward beginner order: 我食飯喺屋企。
  • Natural: 我喺屋企食飯。
  • Why: In a neutral Cantonese sentence, the location normally comes before the action. Build the sentence as “I + at home + eat.”

Leaving out the position word

  • Unclear for the intended meaning: 書喺枱。
  • Right: 書喺枱上面。
  • Why: If you specifically mean “on the table,” add 上面. locates the book relative to the table but does not itself encode “on top of.”

Treating 喺 as a destination marker

  • Wrong for “I’m going to school”: 我去喺學校。
  • Right: 我去學校。
  • Why: normally sets a location, not a destination. With (“go”), the destination follows directly.

Confusing the tones

  • Wrong distinction: pronouncing both 喺 and 係 as if they were the same word
  • Right: 喺 hai2 for location; 係 hai6 for identity
  • Why: Tone distinguishes words in Cantonese. Practise the whole contrast 喺學校 / 係學生, not only the two syllables in isolation.

Usage Notes

is standard in everyday spoken Cantonese and in writing that represents natural speech, including messages, dialogue, and learner materials. In more formal written Chinese, you may encounter instead. Do not let formal written usage push out of your spoken Cantonese.

Cantonese often omits information that is clear from context. If someone asks 你喺邊度?, a natural reply is simply 喺屋企 (“At home”), without repeating . Likewise, 喺呢度 can be a complete practical answer to “Where is it?”

English translations depend on context. 喺機場 may be “at the airport,” 喺香港 may be “in Hong Kong,” and 喺網上 may be “online.” Do not memorise a fixed English preposition for . Memorise the Cantonese location as a unit.

Beyond the Basics / Advanced Use

You do not need to master these points at A1, but they explain patterns you will soon hear.

Location versus existence

Compare two ways of presenting a book:

  • 本書喺枱上面。 — The book is on the table.
  • 枱上面有本書。 — There is a book on the table.

The first begins with a known item and tells you its location. The second begins with a location and introduces something that exists there, using (“have/exist”). This is similar to the English contrast between “The book is…” and “There is a book…,” although the Cantonese structure is especially regular: location + + item.

喺度 before an action

You will also hear 喺度 + verb to present an action as in progress:

  • 佢喺度食飯。 — He’s eating.
  • 你喺度做乜嘢? — What are you doing?

Here 喺度 no longer simply points to “here” in the ordinary sense; together it functions as a progressive marker, showing an action underway. Context distinguishes this from literal location. Compare 佢喺呢度食飯 (“He eats/is eating here”), where 呢度 explicitly means “here.” Treat the progressive construction as a later extension rather than adding 喺度 to every present-tense verb.

Moving the location for emphasis

Conversational Cantonese can bring a location to the front as the topic—what the sentence is going to talk about:

  • 香港,我住過幾年。 — Hong Kong—I lived there for several years.
  • 呢度,我唔係好熟。 — This area—I don’t know it very well.

Such topic-first patterns are useful, but they do not replace the dependable beginner order subject + 喺 + place + action. Use the basic pattern until topic structures become familiar through listening.

Practice Tips

  1. Build three-way contrasts. Say 我係學生 (“I’m a student”), 我喺學校 (“I’m at school”), and 我喺學校溫書 (“I study at school”). This trains identity, location, and action-location as separate patterns.
  2. Describe one room. Choose five objects and say where each one is using 上面, 下面, 入面, or 隔籬. For example: 電話喺枱上面 (“The phone is on the table”).
  3. Practise question-and-answer pairs aloud. Ask 你喺邊度?, 鎖匙喺邊度?, and 你喺唔喺屋企? Then answer without translating word by word. Record yourself and check that 喺 hai2 and 係 hai6 remain distinct.
