Advanced Prepositions in Vietnamese
Giới Từ Nâng Cao
This article is part of the Vietnamese grammar tree on Settemila Lingue.
In Brief
Vietnamese uses short prepositions and prepositional phrases to express relationships that English often marks with from...to, between, around, regarding, and according to. The core patterns are từ...đến for a range, giữa for a middle position, xung quanh for surrounding space, đối với for relevance or viewpoint, and theo for a source, method, or direction.
Overview
At A1, you meet basic location words such as ở “at,” trên “on,” and trong “in.” At A2, you can describe more than a single location: a journey has two endpoints, something stands between two objects, people gather around a place, and an opinion is presented from a particular point of view. That is the job of the expressions in this article.
Vietnamese prepositions do not change form. There is no agreement and no grammatical case (a change in a noun or pronoun that marks its role). The main challenge is therefore not memorizing endings, but choosing the expression that matches the relationship you mean and placing all parts of a paired expression correctly.
English translations are useful clues, but they are not one-to-one rules. English for, for example, may correspond to cho, đối với, or no separate preposition at all. Learn each Vietnamese expression with its typical meaning and sentence pattern rather than replacing English words mechanically.
How It Works
từ...đến: from one endpoint to another
The paired expression từ...đến marks the beginning and end of a range.
| Pattern | Meaning | Example |
|---|---|---|
| từ + place A + đến + place B | from A to B | từ Hà Nội đến Sài Gòn |
| từ + time A + đến + time B | from A until/to B | từ tám giờ đến mười giờ |
| từ + number A + đến + number B | from A to B | từ mười đến hai mươi người |
| từ + category A + đến + category B | across an ordered span | từ trẻ em đến người lớn |
The whole phrase can come after a verb or at the beginning of a clause:
- Tôi làm việc từ thứ Hai đến thứ Sáu. — I work from Monday to Friday.
- Từ nhà đến trường, tôi đi bộ mất mười phút. — From home to school, it takes me ten minutes to walk.
In careful writing, use both markers when both endpoints matter. In everyday speech, one endpoint may be left unstated when the context supplies it: Tôi làm từ tám giờ means “I work from eight o’clock,” while Tôi làm đến năm giờ means “I work until five.”
Do not confuse the preposition đến with the verb đến, “to arrive/come.” In Tôi đến Huế lúc sáu giờ, đến is the verb “arrive in.” In từ Đà Nẵng đến Huế, it marks the end of a range.
giữa: between, among, or in the middle of
Giữa identifies a middle position or a relationship involving two or more sides. A noun phrase (a noun together with words that belong to it) normally follows giữa.
| Pattern | Use | Example |
|---|---|---|
| giữa + two/group noun phrase | amid or among a group | giữa hai ngôi nhà |
| giữa + A + và + B | between two named sides | giữa tôi và anh ấy |
| ở giữa + noun phrase | be located in the middle | ở giữa căn phòng |
| relation + giữa + A + và + B | a relation between A and B | sự khác biệt giữa A và B |
Vietnamese commonly uses giữa...và... where English uses between...and.... Keep và “and”; do not copy the English pairing as if Vietnamese required a special equivalent of and.
Ở giữa makes physical location especially explicit: Cái bàn ở giữa phòng means “The table is in the middle of the room.” Bare giữa can also head a location phrase: Giữa phòng có một cái bàn means “There is a table in the middle of the room.”
xung quanh: around or surrounding
Xung quanh describes a position on multiple sides of something, or movement in the surrounding area.
- xung quanh + noun phrase: xung quanh hồ — around the lake
- ở xung quanh + noun phrase: ở xung quanh trường — in the area around the school
- verb + xung quanh + noun phrase: đi bộ xung quanh công viên — walk around the park
The shorter quanh often has the same spatial meaning and is common in everyday language: quanh nhà “around the house.” Xung quanh is fuller and can emphasize the surrounding area or all sides. With a noun, both xung quanh thành phố and quanh thành phố may be natural, depending on context.
Be careful with khoảng, which often means “approximately” before numbers or “an interval/space.” English around ten people is normally khoảng mười người, not xung quanh mười người. Use xung quanh for surrounding space, not approximate quantity.
đối với: regarding, toward, or as far as ... is concerned
Đối với introduces the person or thing to which a statement, attitude, rule, or effect applies. It is especially useful for evaluations and general statements.
| Position | Pattern | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Topic first | Đối với + person/thing, + comment | Đối với tôi, sức khỏe là quan trọng nhất. |
| After an adjective or expression | adjective/expression + đối với + person/thing | Việc này khó đối với tôi. |
| After an attitude noun or verb | attitude + đối với + person/thing | thái độ của cô ấy đối với công việc |
At the beginning of a sentence, đối với... acts as a topic phrase: it tells the listener whose perspective or which area the following comment concerns. A comma is useful in writing after a longer opening phrase.
Do not use đối với for every English for. A recipient normally takes cho: Tôi mua quà cho mẹ “I buy a gift for my mother.” By contrast, Món quà này rất đặc biệt đối với mẹ means “This gift is very special to/for my mother,” describing its significance to her.
theo: according to, following, by, or along
The central idea of theo is following something: a source, opinion, instruction, method, custom, route, or direction.
| Meaning | Pattern | Example |
|---|---|---|
| according to a person/source | theo + source | theo bác sĩ |
| in someone’s opinion | theo + person + optional opinion phrase | theo tôi |
| following a rule or method | theo + rule/method | theo hướng dẫn |
| by category or unit | theo + basis | xếp theo thứ tự |
| along/following | verb + theo + person/path | đi theo con đường này |
Theo tôi means “in my opinion” or “according to me.” Theo tôi biết is a fixed, useful phrase meaning “as far as I know”; literally, it frames the statement according to what the speaker knows. Theo does not itself guarantee that the information is true—it identifies its source or basis.
With people and movement, theo may function more like the verb “follow”: Đứa bé đi theo mẹ means “The child follows/goes with its mother.” The shared idea of following explains why the same word also introduces instructions and sources.

Common Mistakes
Using đến but forgetting từ in a complete range
- Wrong: Tôi làm việc tám giờ đến năm giờ.
- Right: Tôi làm việc từ tám giờ đến năm giờ.
- Why: When you state both the starting and ending points, the clear standard pattern is từ A đến B.
Leaving out và between two named sides
- Wrong: Quán nằm giữa ngân hàng hiệu sách.
- Right: Quán nằm giữa ngân hàng và hiệu sách.
- Why: Two separately named endpoints use giữa A và B.
Using xung quanh for approximation
- Wrong: Có xung quanh hai mươi người.
- Right: Có khoảng hai mươi người.
- Why: Xung quanh means spatially around. Khoảng expresses an approximate number.
Translating every English “for” as đối với
- Wrong: Tôi gửi thư đối với cô ấy.
- Right: Tôi gửi thư cho cô ấy.
- Why: Cho marks a recipient. Đối với marks relevance, attitude, effect, or viewpoint: Điều đó quan trọng đối với cô ấy “That is important to her.”
Treating theo and đối với as interchangeable
- Wrong: Đối với báo cáo, doanh số đã tăng. (intended: “According to the report...”)
- Right: Theo báo cáo, doanh số đã tăng.
- Why: Use theo to identify an information source. Đối với báo cáo would mean “regarding/as for the report,” changing the relationship.
Usage Notes
Vietnamese often places a time, place, source, or viewpoint phrase at the beginning of a sentence. This establishes the topic before the main message: Theo bác sĩ, tôi cần nghỉ ngơi; Đối với trẻ em, trò chơi này quá khó. In speech, a short pause does the work that a comma shows in writing.
Đối với can sound more deliberate or formal than a simple conversational topic. In casual speech, với or another construction may sometimes be preferred, but they are not automatic substitutes. For example, Với tôi, gia đình là quan trọng nhất is a natural, compact “For me...,” while đối với tôi makes the viewpoint relation more explicit.
Place names generally appear without an English-style article, and the prepositions themselves stay unchanged. You therefore say từ Việt Nam đến Thái Lan without changing either country name. Context supplies distinctions that English may encode with several different prepositions.
Beyond the Basics / Advanced Use
You do not need to master all of these extensions at A2, but you will meet them frequently later.
Từ...đến... can organize an intentionally broad list rather than a literal route or time span: Từ trẻ em đến người lớn, ai cũng thích lễ hội này means “From children to adults, everyone likes this festival.” The endpoints imply everything in between.
Giữa also expresses abstract relationships and choices: mối quan hệ giữa cha mẹ và con cái “the relationship between parents and children,” or chọn giữa hai phương án “choose between two options.” When emphasizing a sharp two-way opposition, advanced writing may use giữa một bên là... và một bên là...—“between, on one side..., and on the other...”
Theo appears in many productive combinations. Tùy theo means “depending on” (Giá thay đổi tùy theo mùa), dựa theo means “based on,” and lần lượt theo can describe an order. These are related expressions, not reasons to translate every English by with theo. Learn the whole phrase used in context.
Finally, đối với may introduce the topic of a formal policy, argument, or comparison: Đối với vấn đề này, chúng ta cần thêm thời gian “Regarding this issue, we need more time.” In polished writing, avoid repeating it in every sentence; once the topic is clear, Vietnamese can continue without restating the phrase.
Practice Tips
- Build five frames, not five isolated words. Complete these aloud with your own details: từ ___ đến ___, giữa ___ và ___, xung quanh ___, đối với ___, and theo ___.
- Describe a real map and schedule. Say what lies between two places, what is around your home, and when a shop opens. Concrete endpoints make the contrasts memorable.
- Label the relationship in what you read. When you see theo, ask whether it marks a source, method, order, or physical following. When you see đối với, ask who or what the statement applies to.
