In Brief
Academic Vietnamese is not simply everyday Vietnamese with longer words. It presents a research problem, develops claims through explicit logical links, distinguishes evidence from interpretation, and adjusts the strength of conclusions. Typical frames include Nghiên cứu cho thấy rằng... “Research shows that...,” Theo tác giả... “According to the author...,” and the cautious Có thể kết luận rằng... “It can be concluded that....”
Overview
At C2, academic writing is mainly a matter of discourse—how sentences work together to build a sustained argument—rather than a new set of verb endings. A successful paper tells readers what is being investigated, how the evidence bears on the question, which ideas come from other sources, and how confident the writer is. These expectations apply across theses, journal articles, research reports, and formal analytical essays, although each discipline has its own conventions.
Vietnamese academic prose often favors explicit topic phrases, abstract nouns, Sino-Vietnamese vocabulary, and carefully chosen connectors. It can omit personal agents when the method or result matters more than the researcher. However, formality does not require maximum length or obscurity. Clear relations between claims are more valuable than strings of impressive-sounding words.
English-speaking learners should pay particular attention to two differences. First, Vietnamese has no grammatical equivalent of English modal tense forms such as “might have”; caution is usually expressed with words and phrases such as có thể, dường như, or nhiều khả năng. Second, English impersonal passives do not always map naturally onto được or bị. Vietnamese often places the evidence itself first: Kết quả cho thấy... rather than translating “It is shown by the results that...” word for word.
How It Works
Give each section an argumentative job
A thesis or article commonly moves through the following functions. The exact headings vary, but the logic is widely useful.
| Function | Common Vietnamese wording | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Introduce the issue | Trong bối cảnh...; Vấn đề đặt ra là... | Establishes context and identifies the problem |
| State the aim | Nghiên cứu này nhằm...; Mục tiêu của nghiên cứu là... | Defines what the study will do |
| Set the scope | Trong phạm vi bài viết này... | Limits the claim or material considered |
| Review sources | Các nghiên cứu trước đây chủ yếu tập trung vào... | Positions the study in relation to earlier work |
| Describe method | Dữ liệu được thu thập thông qua... | Explains the evidence and procedure |
| Present results | Kết quả phân tích cho thấy... | Reports an observed result |
| Interpret | Kết quả này có thể được lý giải bởi... | Offers an explanation rather than a raw finding |
| Conclude | Từ những phân tích trên, có thể kết luận rằng... | Draws a conclusion with an appropriate level of caution |
A strong paragraph also has an internal structure: a controlling claim, evidence or reasoning, and a sentence explaining why that evidence matters. Vietnamese does not require every paragraph to follow a rigid template, but the relation between these parts should be recoverable without guesswork.
Separate observation, interpretation, and conclusion
These three moves are related but not interchangeable:
- Số liệu cho thấy tỷ lệ này tăng. — The data show that this rate increased. This reports a pattern in the evidence.
- Sự gia tăng này có thể bắt nguồn từ thay đổi chính sách. — This increase may stem from a policy change. This interprets the pattern.
- Do đó, có thể kết luận rằng chính sách có tác động nhất định. — Therefore, it may be concluded that the policy has a certain effect. This draws a limited conclusion.
The phrase cho thấy literally means “show/indicate” and is one of the most useful reporting predicates (words that state what evidence or a source does). It does not automatically prove causation. If the study only finds an association, use có liên quan đến “is related to” rather than dẫn đến “leads to.”
Calibrate the force of a claim
Hedging means deliberately reducing a statement’s certainty or breadth so that it matches the evidence. It is not evasiveness; it is a way of making an accurate claim.
| Strength | Vietnamese pattern | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| Direct | X chứng minh rằng... | Evidence genuinely establishes the proposition; use sparingly |
| Strong | Kết quả cho thấy rằng... | The result clearly supports the stated observation |
| Probable | Nhiều khả năng...; có cơ sở để cho rằng... | The interpretation is well supported but not certain |
| Possible | Có thể...; có khả năng... | One plausible conclusion or outcome |
| Tentative | Dường như...; có vẻ như... | An apparent pattern requiring caution |
| Limited | Ở một mức độ nhất định...; phần nào... | The effect or applicability is partial |
| Open | Không loại trừ khả năng... | Another explanation remains possible |
Place the hedge where its scope is clear. Có thể kết luận rằng X qualifies the act of concluding; X có thể làm tăng Y qualifies the proposed effect. Avoid piling up several cautious expressions—dường như có thể phần nào cho thấy—unless each genuinely contributes a distinct meaning.
Academic writers also limit generalizations with scope phrases: trong phạm vi mẫu khảo sát “within the survey sample,” đối với nhóm người tham gia này “for this participant group,” and trong bối cảnh được nghiên cứu “in the context studied.” A scoped claim is usually stronger intellectually than a vague universal claim.
Attribute ideas and cite sources
Attribution tells readers whose position is being reported. The most common frames differ subtly:
- Theo Nguyễn Văn A (2022), ... — “According to Nguyễn Văn A (2022), ...” Neutral attribution.
- Nguyễn Văn A (2022) cho rằng... — “Nguyễn Văn A (2022) argues/maintains that....” Presents the source’s position.
- Nguyễn Văn A (2022) chỉ ra rằng... — “Nguyễn Văn A (2022) points out/shows that....” Suggests that the source identifies something through analysis.
- Như Nguyễn Văn A (2022) đã nhận định, ... — “As Nguyễn Văn A (2022) observed, ....” Integrates the attribution into your sentence.
- Theo quan điểm của tác giả, ... — “In the author’s view, ....” Useful only when tác giả has a clear referent; otherwise name the author.
- Nguyễn Văn A (2022, dẫn theo Trần Thị B, 2024) ... — A secondary citation: A is known through B. Use only when the original source was not consulted and follow the required citation style.
Do not let theo float without a source. Theo nghiên cứu... may mean “according to the study,” but the study must be identifiable. Also distinguish attribution from endorsement: reporting that a scholar cho rằng something does not mean that you accept it.
Build cohesion with explicit relations
Cohesion is the set of links that makes adjacent sentences read as one argument. Choose a connector for its meaning, not merely to sound formal.
| Relation | Useful connectors | Meaning in context |
|---|---|---|
| Addition | hơn nữa, bên cạnh đó, đồng thời | adds a related point |
| Contrast | tuy nhiên, trái lại, trong khi đó | introduces a limitation or opposing pattern |
| Concession | mặc dù... nhưng...; dù... vẫn... | acknowledges one fact before asserting another |
| Cause | do, bởi, xuất phát từ | gives a cause or basis |
| Result | do đó, vì vậy, theo đó | states a consequence; theo đó often refers to a preceding decision or account |
| Reformulation | nói cách khác, cụ thể là | restates or specifies |
| Inference | từ đó, qua đó, trên cơ sở đó | derives a point from prior material |
| Sequence | trước hết, tiếp theo, cuối cùng | orders stages of an explanation |
English “however” tempts learners to use tuy nhiên at every turn. Vietnamese academic prose has finer choices: trong khi đó compares simultaneous or corresponding situations, while trái lại marks a sharper opposition. A connector cannot repair a missing logical relation; first decide whether the second sentence contrasts, results from, or simply adds to the first.
Package information in an academic style
Vietnamese can turn an action or quality into a topic with nominalization—presenting it as a noun-like unit. Common organizers include việc for an event or action, sự for a state or change, quá trình “process,” mức độ “degree,” and khả năng “possibility/capacity”:
- Việc áp dụng phương pháp này giúp giảm sai số. — Applying this method helps reduce error.
- Sự thay đổi trong cơ cấu dân số ảnh hưởng đến... — The change in population structure affects....
- Mức độ tham gia của người học... — The degree of learner participation....
These forms allow a whole idea to function as the topic of a sentence. Yet too many nested nominalizations make prose heavy: việc thực hiện sự đánh giá mức độ... is often clearer when rewritten with an active verb.
Vietnamese also permits agentless statements when the procedure or conclusion is central: Dữ liệu được mã hóa theo ba nhóm. Here được helps form a neutral passive. But bị usually carries an adverse or unwanted implication, so it is unsuitable for a routine method unless the event is genuinely negative. Often no passive is needed: Nghiên cứu sử dụng ba tiêu chí “The study uses three criteria” is direct and natural.
Examples in Context
| Vietnamese | English | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Trong phạm vi bài viết này, chúng tôi tập trung phân tích hai yếu tố chính. | Within this article, we focus on analyzing two main factors. | Limits the scope before stating the task. |
| Nghiên cứu này nhằm làm rõ mối quan hệ giữa ngôn ngữ và bản sắc xã hội. | This study aims to clarify the relationship between language and social identity. | States the research aim. |
| Các nghiên cứu trước đây chủ yếu tập trung vào khu vực đô thị. | Previous studies have mainly focused on urban areas. | Positions earlier scholarship. |
| Theo quan điểm của tác giả, khái niệm này cần được xem xét lại. | In the author’s view, this concept needs to be reconsidered. | Attributes a judgment; the author must be identifiable. |
| Dữ liệu được thu thập thông qua phỏng vấn bán cấu trúc. | The data were collected through semi-structured interviews. | Method-focused passive. |
| Kết quả phân tích cho thấy sự khác biệt có ý nghĩa giữa hai nhóm. | The analysis results indicate a meaningful difference between the two groups. | Reports a finding without yet explaining it. |
| Phát hiện này phù hợp với nhận định của Trần Thị B (2023). | This finding is consistent with Trần Thị B’s (2023) observation. | Relates the result to a source. |
| Tuy nhiên, kết quả trên không nhất thiết áp dụng cho mọi bối cảnh. | However, the above result does not necessarily apply to every context. | Restricts generalization. |
| Sự khác biệt này có thể bắt nguồn từ cách lựa chọn mẫu. | This difference may stem from the sampling method. | Offers a hedged explanation. |
| Không loại trừ khả năng các yếu tố khác cũng tác động đến kết quả. | The possibility that other factors also affected the result cannot be excluded. | Keeps alternative explanations open. |
| Nói cách khác, tần suất xuất hiện không đồng nghĩa với mức độ quan trọng. | In other words, frequency of occurrence is not equivalent to importance. | Reformulates a distinction. |
| Trên cơ sở các bằng chứng nêu trên, có thể kết luận rằng giả thuyết được ủng hộ một phần. | On the basis of the evidence above, it can be concluded that the hypothesis is partially supported. | Connects evidence to a calibrated conclusion. |
Common Mistakes
Translating the English impersonal “it” literally
- Wrong: Nó có thể được kết luận rằng phương pháp này hiệu quả.
- Right: Có thể kết luận rằng phương pháp này có hiệu quả.
- Why: Vietnamese does not use dummy nó like impersonal English “it.” Begin directly with có thể kết luận rằng.
Claiming proof when the evidence only suggests
- Wrong: Kết quả này chứng minh chính sách là nguyên nhân duy nhất.
- Right: Kết quả này cho thấy chính sách có thể là một trong những nguyên nhân.
- Why: Chứng minh makes a strong claim of proof. Match the predicate and hedge to what the study design can establish.
Using bị for a neutral procedure
- Wrong: Dữ liệu bị phân loại thành ba nhóm.
- Right: Dữ liệu được phân loại thành ba nhóm.
- Why: Bị commonly presents an event as adverse. Routine research procedures normally take được or an active construction.
Attaching a citation to an unclear claim
- Wrong: Theo tác giả, điều này là quan trọng.
- Right: Theo Lê Văn C (2021), sự tham gia của cộng đồng là yếu tố quan trọng.
- Why: Both tác giả and điều này lack clear referents. Name the source and the proposition whenever ambiguity is possible.
Treating connectors as decoration
- Wrong: Mẫu khảo sát nhỏ. Hơn nữa, không thể khái quát kết quả cho toàn bộ dân số.
- Right: Mẫu khảo sát nhỏ; do đó, không thể khái quát kết quả cho toàn bộ dân số.
- Why: The second point is a consequence, not merely an addition. Do đó makes the reasoning explicit.
Overloading the sentence with abstract nouns
- Wrong: Việc thực hiện sự xem xét mức độ ảnh hưởng của việc thay đổi...
- Right: Nghiên cứu xem xét mức độ mà sự thay đổi này ảnh hưởng đến...
- Why: Nominalization is useful, but several nested việc/sự phrases hide the action. Restore a clear verb and subject.
Usage Notes
Academic Vietnamese varies by discipline and genre. Humanities writing may use more explicit evaluation and extended interpretation; empirical reports often separate methods, results, and discussion more sharply. Institutional rules also determine citation format, pronoun choice, section names, and whether an abstract must appear in more than one language. Follow the target journal or university guide rather than assuming one universal template.
Chúng tôi “we” is common even for a single author in some formal and academic contexts, but it is not mandatory. Tác giả “the author” can sound appropriately impersonal, while repeated self-reference can become stiff. An active, nonpersonal subject is often cleaner: Bài viết phân tích... “The article analyzes....” Do not switch unpredictably among tôi, chúng tôi, and tác giả.
Sino-Vietnamese terms such as phân tích “analyze,” đánh giá “evaluate,” giả thuyết “hypothesis,” and hệ quả “consequence” are frequent because they label abstract relations precisely. They are not automatically better than plainer words. Prefer the term established in the field, define specialized terminology, and keep one term for one concept unless a distinction is intended.
Punctuation also carries argumentative structure. A colon can introduce an explanation or list, and a semicolon can join closely related independent statements. Nevertheless, very long semicolon chains are harder to follow than two well-linked sentences. Vietnamese quotation and bibliographic punctuation should follow the chosen style guide consistently.
Beyond the Basics: Advanced Use
At the highest level, writers manage not only certainty but also stance—the position they project toward a claim and toward other scholars. Compare Tác giả cho rằng... (neutral report), Tác giả khẳng định... (the source asserts strongly), and Tác giả thừa nhận... (the source concedes or acknowledges). These reporting verbs subtly frame the cited position. Select them from the source’s actual rhetorical move, not from your opinion of the author.
Experienced writers combine concession and rebuttal without misrepresenting alternatives:
Đúng là cách tiếp cận này giúp đơn giản hóa mô hình; tuy nhiên, nó chưa giải thích được sự khác biệt giữa các nhóm.
“It is true that this approach simplifies the model; however, it has not yet explained the difference between the groups.” The first clause grants a real strength; the second identifies a limit. This is more persuasive than dismissing the competing approach with an unsupported adjective.
Information order also shapes emphasis. Starting with Về phương pháp nghiên cứu,... sets the domain for the whole sentence. Starting with Đáng chú ý là... directs attention to an unexpected point. Repeating the key noun may be clearer than using a vague pronoun, but controlled repetition should not become mechanical. C2 writing balances lexical continuity with readable variation.
Finally, distinguish a limitation from a failure. Nghiên cứu còn một số hạn chế identifies boundaries that readers should consider; it does not invalidate every finding. A good limitations section names the source of uncertainty, explains its likely effect, and avoids claims beyond the available evidence. This same discipline should govern the conclusion: summarize the contribution, state its scope, and identify questions that remain open.
Practice Tips
- Build a claim ladder. Take one finding and write four versions using chứng minh, cho thấy, có cơ sở để cho rằng, and dường như. Decide which version the evidence really supports and explain why.
- Reverse-outline a published paragraph. Label each sentence “claim,” “evidence,” “attribution,” “interpretation,” “limitation,” or “conclusion.” Then underline the Vietnamese connector or reporting phrase that signals its role.
- Edit in separate passes. First check source attribution, then the strength and scope of every claim, and finally sentence weight. Replace vague điều này references and unpack any chain containing several instances of việc or sự.
