The والا Construction in Urdu

والا کی ساخت

This article is part of the Urdu grammar tree on Settemila Lingue.

In Brief

Urdu والا (vālā) turns a word or phrase into a description: دودھ والا is a person associated with milk, سبز والا is “the green one,” and جانے والا ہوں means “I am about to go” or “I am going to leave.” Its form normally agrees with the person or thing described: masculine singular والا, feminine singular والی, and plural or masculine oblique والے.

Overview

The والا construction is one of Urdu’s most flexible ways to label people and identify things. English often needs several unrelated expressions—“milkman,” “the one in front,” “the room next to mine,” or “about to leave”—where Urdu can build all of them with والا، والی، والے. You will hear these forms constantly in shops, directions, family conversation, and everyday descriptions.

At B1, the main task is not merely to recognize والا, but to understand what comes before it and what it describes. It may follow a noun, an adjective, a postpositional phrase (a phrase ending in a word such as کے ساتھ, “next to/with”), or a verb infinitive. The surrounding context supplies the exact relationship: چائے والا may mean a tea seller, while چائے والا کپ means the cup associated with tea.

Grammatically, والا behaves much like a changeable adjective—a describing word. It agrees in gender and number with its head noun (the main person or thing being described), whether that noun is stated or merely understood. This builds directly on Urdu adjective agreement.

How It Works

The agreement forms

Form Usual agreement Simple example Meaning
والا (vālā) masculine singular, direct form دودھ والا آدمی the man who sells/delivers milk
والی (vālī) feminine singular دودھ والی دکان the shop associated with milk
والے (vāle) masculine plural; also masculine singular oblique دودھ والے لوگ people who sell/deliver milk
والیاں (vāliyā̃) feminine plural, direct form نیلی والیاں the blue ones (feminine plural)
والی / والیوں feminine plural before case-marking contexts نیلی والیوں کو to the blue ones

The first three forms cover most B1 needs. والے has two jobs. It marks masculine plural, but it is also the masculine singular oblique form—the form used before many postpositions such as کو، سے، کا:

  • نیلا والا اچھا ہے۔ — The blue one is good.
  • نیلے والے کو دو۔ — Give it to the blue one.
  • نیلے والے جوتے — the blue shoes

In respectful reference to one person, plural-style agreement is common: دودھ والے آئے ہیں can politely mean “The milkman has come.” The plural verb آئے ہیں reflects respect, not necessarily several people.

1. Noun + والا: a person or thing associated with something

Place a noun before والا to identify someone or something by occupation, service, possession, contents, or another obvious association:

  • دودھ والا — milk seller/delivery person
  • رکشے والا — rickshaw driver
  • دکان والا — shopkeeper; person at the shop
  • چابی والا ڈبہ — the box with the key / the key box
  • بالکونی والا کمرہ — the room with a balcony

There is no single English suffix that matches والا. Do not automatically translate every example as “-man” or “person with.” Context determines whether the relationship is an occupation, ownership, contents, a feature, or simply association.

The form agrees with what is being described, not necessarily with the noun immediately before والا. Compare:

  • بالکونی والا کمرہ — room is masculine, so والا
  • بالکونی والی جگہ — place is feminine, so والی
  • بالکونی والے کمرے — rooms is masculine plural, so والے

2. Adjective + والا: “the … one”

After an adjective, the construction picks one item or person from a known set. This is close to English “the red one,” “the bigger one,” or “the next one.” The omitted noun is understood from the situation:

  • سبز والا — the green one (masculine)
  • سبز والی — the green one (feminine)
  • بڑے والے — the big ones / the bigger ones
  • اگلے والے صاحب — the next gentleman/person

When the noun is stated, والا still agrees with that noun: لال والی قمیض has والی because قمیض is feminine. English speakers sometimes focus on the color word and miss this agreement; Urdu makes the understood or stated item control the ending.

3. Phrase + والا: identified by location or relationship

A longer phrase can come before والا. This is especially useful for identifying a place or object by where it is:

  • میرے ساتھ والا کمرہ — the room next to mine
  • سامنے والی دکان — the shop in front
  • اوپر والے لوگ — the people upstairs
  • دروازے کے پاس والی کرسی — the chair near the door

Treat the whole section before والا as one description. In دروازے کے پاس والی کرسی, “near the door” identifies کرسی, and feminine کرسی requires والی.

4. Verb + والا: someone who does an action

With a verb, use the oblique infinitive: replace infinitive ـنا with ـنے, then add the agreeing form of والا.

Infinitive Before والا Example Meaning
جانا (to go) جانے جانے والا مسافر a passenger who is going/leaving
کرنا (to do) کرنے کام کرنے والی عورت a woman who works
لکھنا (to write) لکھنے خط لکھنے والے لوگ people who write letters
آنا (to come) آنے آنے والی بس the bus that is coming / next bus

This use can describe a habitual role (“one who does”), a characteristic, or a particular expected action. The sentence and time words tell you which meaning is intended.

5. Verb + والا + ہونا: expected or near-future action

The pattern verb in ـنے + والا/والی/والے + ہونا presents the subject as on the point of, preparing to, or expected to perform an action:

  • میں جانے والا ہوں۔ — I am about to go.
  • وہ آنے والی ہے۔ — She is about to come.
  • ہم کام شروع کرنے والے ہیں۔ — We are about to start work.

Agreement follows the subject. A male speaker says میں جانے والا ہوں; a female speaker says میں جانے والی ہوں. The auxiliary ہوں/ہے/ہیں/تھا/تھی/تھے also matches the subject in the normal way.

This is not simply a mechanical replacement for English will. It often suggests that an event is impending, arranged, expected, or already developing. Depending on context, ہونے والا ہے can mean “is about to happen,” “is going to happen,” or “is due to happen.”

Examples in Context

Urdu English Note

لال والی قمیض دو۔ Give me the red shirt. والی agrees with feminine قمیض
سبز والا مجھے پسند ہے۔ I like the green one. The omitted item is masculine
اگلے والے صاحب آئیں۔ Next person, please come forward. Respectful public-facing expression
بالکونی والا کمرہ خالی ہے۔ The room with a balcony is vacant. Feature + masculine کمرہ
سامنے والی دکان بند ہے۔ The shop in front is closed. Location + feminine دکان
میرے ساتھ والے کمرے میں کون ہے؟ Who is in the room next to mine? والے is oblique before کمرے میں
یہ چابی کس دروازے والی ہے؟ Which door is this key for? Association understood from context
وہ اخبار بیچنے والا لڑکا ہے۔ He is the boy who sells newspapers. Habitual action or occupation
آنے والی بس لاہور جائے گی۔ The approaching/next bus will go to Lahore. Expected future participant
میں جانے والا ہوں۔ I’m about to go. Male speaker; near future
میں ابھی نکلنے والی ہوں۔ I’m just about to leave. Female speaker; ابھی adds immediacy
بارش ہونے والی ہے۔ It is going to rain. An event expected to happen
ہم میچ شروع کرنے والے تھے۔ We were about to start the match. Past viewpoint; the start may not have occurred
نیلے والے کو الگ رکھیں۔ Keep the blue one separate. Masculine singular oblique before کو

Common Mistakes

1. Leaving والا unchanged

  • Wrong: لال والا قمیض دو۔
  • Right: لال والی قمیض دو۔
  • Why: قمیض is feminine, so its description must use والی. English “the red shirt” gives no audible gender cue, but Urdu does.

2. Using the full infinitive before والا

  • Wrong: میں جانا والا ہوں۔
  • Right: میں جانے والا ہوں۔
  • Why: Before والا, the infinitive takes its oblique ـنے form: جانا → جانے, کرنا → کرنے, پڑھنا → پڑھنے.

3. Making the form agree with the nearest noun

  • Wrong: بالکونی والی کمرہ
  • Right: بالکونی والا کمرہ
  • Why: والا describes کمرہ, which is masculine. The feminine gender of بالکونی does not control the ending.

4. Translating every noun + والا as an owner

  • Misleading: treating رکشے والا only as “the person who owns a rickshaw”
  • Better: understand it in context as “rickshaw driver” or “the person associated with the rickshaw.”
  • Why: والا expresses a broad association. English chooses a more specific noun based on the real-world situation.

5. Using the near-future pattern as a neutral future everywhere

  • Awkward in many contexts: میں اگلے سال روز جانے والا ہوں۔ for a plain statement about a repeated future routine
  • Natural neutral future: میں اگلے سال روز جاؤں گا۔ — I will go every day next year.
  • Why: جانے والا ہوں usually presents an action as impending, intended, expected, or characteristic. Urdu’s ordinary future is often better for a neutral prediction or routine.

6. Forgetting oblique والے before a postposition

  • Wrong: نیلا والا کو دو۔
  • Right: نیلے والے کو دو۔
  • Why: A masculine singular expression normally becomes oblique before کو: both the adjective and والا change here.

Usage Notes

A productive pattern, but not a dictionary replacement

Speakers readily create useful descriptions with والا, especially when pointing out an item: کھڑکی والا کمرہ (“the room with the window”) or کونے والی میز (“the table in the corner”). Some person labels, such as دودھ والا and رکشے والا, are conventional everyday expressions. Others are understood freshly from context. A grammatically possible phrase may therefore sound like an improvised description rather than a fixed occupation name.

Register and politeness

Everyday والا labels are common and usually neutral, but a bare occupation label can sound overly casual if used as direct address. In a polite setting, use a name, title, or صاحب where appropriate. اگلے والے صاحب آئیں softens “the next one” by respectfully referring to the person as صاحب.

Respectful singular people may trigger plural agreement: اخبار والے آئے ہیں may refer to one newspaper seller. Only context tells whether والے means plural or respectful singular.

Script and pronunciation

The standard forms are written separately as والا، والی، والے, although they form one close unit with the preceding expression. Romanization varies; you may see vālā/wālā, vālī/wālī, and vāle/wāle. The Urdu spelling and agreement pattern matter more than the romanization convention.

English equivalents depend on context

English frequently uses a relative clause—a clause beginning with “who,” “that,” or “which”—where Urdu uses والا:

  • کام کرنے والی عورت — “the woman who works”
  • کل آنے والے مہمان — “the guests who are coming tomorrow”
  • میز پر والی کتاب — “the book that is on the table”

Do not search for one fixed English word. First identify the head noun, then ask what relationship the preceding phrase expresses.

Beyond the Basics

والا as a participle-like modifier

With verbs, ـنے والا works somewhat like a participle (a verb form used as a description). It can be attributive, directly modifying a noun, or predicative, completing a sentence with ہونا:

  • Attributive: جیتنے والی ٹیم — the team that will win / the winning team
  • Predicative: ٹیم جیتنے والی ہے۔ — The team is going to win.

The same Urdu form can point toward habit, purpose, expectation, or futurity. Time expressions and general knowledge resolve the meaning. روز آنے والا آدمی is “the man who comes every day,” while کل آنے والا آدمی is “the man who will come tomorrow.”

Relative time, not only the immediate future

The auxiliary may be put in the past: ہم نکلنے والے تھے means “We were about to leave” or “We were going to leave.” This often invites a continuation showing interruption: ہم نکلنے والے تھے کہ بارش شروع ہو گئی — “We were about to leave when it began to rain.” The action was expected from that past viewpoint; the construction itself does not guarantee that it happened.

With nouns such as وقت and دن, verbal والا can describe what lies ahead: آنے والے دنوں میں means “in the coming days.” This is broader than immediate “about to.” Likewise, ہونے والا may mean “future,” “prospective,” or “the one due to be,” depending on the noun and context.

Negative meanings

Negation usually applies to the whole prediction or status:

  • میں جانے والا نہیں ہوں۔ — I am not going to leave / I have no intention of leaving.
  • یہ مسئلہ جلد حل ہونے والا نہیں ہے۔ — This problem is not going to be solved soon.

Word order matters to emphasis. At this level, learn the common frame ـنے والا نہیں + ہونا rather than trying to place نہیں directly inside every possible long modifier.

Lexicalized words

Some والا expressions become stable labels whose meaning is more specific than their parts suggest. Dictionaries may list them as established nouns, while speakers still recognize the productive والا pattern. This explains why a familiar label can feel noun-like even though it continues to show agreement.

Practice Tips

  1. Build agreement sets. Choose one phrase and combine it with four nouns: بالکونی والا کمرہ، بالکونی والی جگہ، بالکونی والے کمرے، بالکونی والی جگہیں. Say the head noun aloud so you know what controls agreement.
  2. Turn infinitives into two meanings. For five common verbs, make one habitual description and one near-future sentence: پڑھنے والا طالب علم and طالب علم پڑھنے والا ہے. This trains you to use context rather than equating ـنے والا with only one English tense.
  3. Practice real choices. Look at objects around you and identify them as بڑا والا, نیلی والی, دروازے کے پاس والا, and so on. Then add کو or سے to practise the oblique form: بڑے والے کو, نیلے والے سے.
