In Brief
Ukrainian ordinal numbers answer котрий? (“which one in order?”): перший, другий, третій (“first, second, third”). They behave like adjectives, so their ending changes to match a noun’s gender, number, and case. In a date, the day is an ordinal in the neuter form—перше березня (“the first of March”)—and the month is normally in the genitive case.
Overview
Ordinal numbers show position in a sequence: the first page, the second attempt, the twenty-third floor. Unlike English ordinals, which mostly keep one form (first, second, third), Ukrainian ordinals agree with the noun they describe. Перший день, перша сторінка, and перше місце all mean “first,” but the ending reflects the gender of “day,” “page,” or “place.”
This topic is introduced at B1 because it brings together numbers and adjective agreement. A case is a change in a word’s form that shows its role or its relationship to another word. Once an ordinal is used after a preposition or in a phrase such as “after the third hour,” it takes the same case ending that an adjective would: після третьої години.
Dates are especially important because Ukrainian does not simply place two unchanged numbers side by side. The day is treated as an ordinal, while the month is expressed with a genitive form: друге травня (“May 2nd”). In a full year expression, року (“of the year”) is also genitive: друге травня дві тисячі двадцять шостого року.
How It Works
Forming basic ordinal numbers
The first few forms must be learned individually. From four onward, most forms are closely related to cardinal numbers, though spelling and stem changes still deserve attention.
| Number | Masculine ordinal | English |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | перший | first |
| 2 | другий | second |
| 3 | третій | third |
| 4 | четвертий | fourth |
| 5 | п’ятий | fifth |
| 6 | шостий | sixth |
| 7 | сьомий | seventh |
| 8 | восьмий | eighth |
| 9 | дев’ятий | ninth |
| 10 | десятий | tenth |
| 11 | одинадцятий | eleventh |
| 12 | дванадцятий | twelfth |
| 20 | двадцятий | twentieth |
| 30 | тридцятий | thirtieth |
| 40 | сороковий | fortieth |
| 100 | сотий | hundredth |
| 1,000 | тисячний | thousandth |
Agreement with the noun
The dictionary form is usually masculine singular. Change the ending to match the noun’s gender (masculine, feminine, or neuter) and number (singular or plural).
| Gender/number | “first” | “second” | Example |
|---|---|---|---|
| Masculine singular | перший | другий | перший день — the first day |
| Feminine singular | перша | друга | перша сторінка — the first page |
| Neuter singular | перше | друге | перше місце — first place |
| Plural | перші | другі | перші кроки — the first steps |
The noun controls the form. English speakers often focus on the person or object being discussed, but Ukrainian agreement follows the grammatical gender of the noun itself: перша книжка because книжка is feminine, and перший роман because роман is masculine.
Declension: changing the case
Ordinal numbers decline like adjectives. Declension simply means changing the ending for case. The table below uses третій with one noun of each gender. It gives the main singular patterns; the exact adjective pattern depends on the ordinal’s ending.
| Case and basic use | Masculine: третій день | Feminine: третя година | Neuter: третє місце |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nominative: naming the subject | третій день | третя година | третє місце |
| Genitive: “of,” after до/після | третього дня | третьої години | третього місця |
| Dative: “to/for” | третьому дню | третій годині | третьому місцю |
| Accusative: direct object | третій день | третю годину | третє місце |
| Instrumental: “with/by” | третім днем | третьою годиною | третім місцем |
| Locative: after у/на for location/time | на третьому дні | о третій годині | на третьому місці |
For a masculine animate noun (a person or animal), the accusative usually matches the genitive: Я бачу другого студента (“I see the second student”). For an inanimate masculine noun, it usually matches the nominative: Я читаю другий розділ (“I am reading the second chapter”).
Compound ordinal numbers
In compound ordinals, only the final component is ordinal; the earlier components remain cardinal:
- двадцять перший — twenty-first
- сто сорок друга сторінка — the 142nd page
- дві тисячі двадцять шостий рік — the year 2026
The final component agrees and declines: на двадцять першій сторінці (“on page twenty-one”), у дві тисячі двадцять шостому році (“in the year 2026”). The words before that final component do not acquire adjective endings.
Saying the date
When stating today’s date or identifying a calendar date, Ukrainian normally uses:
neuter ordinal day + genitive month
- Сьогодні перше березня. — Today is March 1st.
- Завтра буде двадцять друге червня. — Tomorrow will be June 22nd.
The neuter form can be understood as agreeing with an omitted word число (“date; number”), which is neuter. Month names then answer the genitive question “of what?”
| Month | Genitive used in dates | Example |
|---|---|---|
| січень | січня | перше січня |
| лютий | лютого | друге лютого |
| березень | березня | третє березня |
| квітень | квітня | четверте квітня |
| травень | травня | п’яте травня |
| червень | червня | шосте червня |
| липень | липня | сьоме липня |
| серпень | серпня | восьме серпня |
| вересень | вересня | дев’яте вересня |
| жовтень | жовтня | десяте жовтня |
| листопад | листопада | одинадцяте листопада |
| грудень | грудня | дванадцяте грудня |
When an event happens on a date, the date is commonly put in the genitive without a preposition:
- Зустріч відбудеться п’ятого квітня. — The meeting will take place on April 5th.
- Я народилася двадцять першого липня. — I was born on July 21st.
Notice the contrast: Сьогодні п’яте квітня names the date, but зустріч п’ятого квітня places an event on that date.
Adding a year
A full date commonly ends with the year’s ordinal form in the genitive, followed by року:
двадцять четверте серпня дві тисячі двадцять шостого року
“August 24, 2026”
In writing, dates often appear numerically as 24.08.2026 or 24 серпня 2026 року. Ukrainian normally orders them day–month–year, unlike the month–day–year order common in American English.

| Відкрийте книжку на двадцять першій сторінці. | Open the book to page twenty-one. | Compound ordinal; feminine locative |
| Сьогодні перше березня. | Today is March 1st. | Date being named |
| Іспит буде другого червня. | The exam will be on June 2nd. | Event date in the genitive |
| Вона народилася тридцять першого грудня. | She was born on December 31st. | Compound day; only the final part changes |

Common Mistakes
Leaving the ordinal in its dictionary form
- Wrong: на перший сторінці
- Right: на першій сторінці
- Why: Match the ordinal to the noun’s gender and the case required by the sentence. Сторінка is feminine, and на indicating location requires the locative here, so both words take the appropriate feminine locative ending.
Using a cardinal number where an ordinal is needed
- Wrong: Я живу на три поверсі.
- Right: Я живу на третьому поверсі.
- Why: Три counts three floors; третій identifies one floor’s position in a sequence.
Keeping the month in the nominative
- Wrong: Сьогодні перше березень.
- Right: Сьогодні перше березня.
- Why: In a date, the month is genitive: literally, “the first of March.”
Using the naming form for an event date
- Wrong: Концерт буде двадцять друге червня.
- Right: Концерт буде двадцять другого червня.
- Why: Двадцять друге names the date; an event occurring on that date commonly uses the genitive двадцять другого.
Changing every part of a compound ordinal
- Wrong: на двадцятій першій сторінці
- Right: на двадцять першій сторінці
- Why: Only the final component of a compound ordinal takes the ordinal ending and declines.
Copying American date order
- Wrong or misleading: 07.04.2026 intended as July 4
- Right: 04.07.2026 for July 4, 2026
- Why: Ukrainian numerical dates use day–month–year. Writing the month as a word—4 липня 2026 року—removes ambiguity.
Usage Notes
Ukrainian uses ordinals for floors, chapters, lessons, routes, rankings, centuries, and repeated events: п’ятий поверх, сьомий розділ, друга спроба. This overlaps with English, but the required case ending makes the surrounding preposition important. Compare до третього поверху (“up to the third floor”), на третьому поверсі (“on the third floor”), and третій поверх (“the third floor”).
For clock hours, Ukrainian often uses feminine ordinals because the understood or stated noun година (“hour”) is feminine: Котра година? — Третя. (“What time is it? — Three o’clock.”), о третій годині (“at three o’clock”), після третьої години (“after three o’clock”). This can feel surprising to an English speaker, since English uses the cardinal three.
Digits are common in schedules, addresses, and administrative writing. When an ordinal is written with a digit in ordinary text, an ending may be attached with a hyphen, such as у 1990-х роках (“in the 1990s”) or на 3-му поверсі (“on the 3rd floor”). In polished prose, spelling out short ordinals is often easier to read.
Beyond the Basics / Advanced Use
Centuries and historical periods
Century names are ordinals agreeing with століття, a neuter noun. After у/в meaning “in,” the phrase is locative:
- дев’ятнадцяте століття — the nineteenth century
- у дев’ятнадцятому столітті — in the nineteenth century
- на початку двадцять першого століття — at the beginning of the twenty-first century
The last example is genitive because на початку (“at the beginning of”) governs a genitive phrase.
Dates as formal document language
In formal contexts, a date may be written with digits and the year marker: 7 травня 2026 року. When read aloud as a date, 7 is understood as the appropriate ordinal form: сьомого травня when referring to an event on that day. A bare calendar heading may instead be read as сьоме травня.
Older or highly formal phrasing can use числа after an ordinal date, but learners do not normally need to add it. The modern concise forms п’ятого квітня and 5 квітня are standard and natural.
Ordinals used as nouns
An ordinal can stand alone when the noun is clear from context. Its ending still reflects the omitted noun:
- Я візьму перший. — I’ll take the first one. (masculine item)
- Вона прийшла другою. — She arrived second. (instrumental feminine)
- Ми були першими. — We were the first ones. (instrumental plural)
In rankings after verbs such as бути (“to be”), стати (“to become”), or фінішувати (“to finish”), the instrumental is frequent because it describes the role or result: він став першим (“he became the first”).
Practice Tips
- Build four-form sets. For each new ordinal, say the masculine, feminine, neuter, and plural forms together: перший — перша — перше — перші. Then attach one real noun to each form.
- Turn a calendar into a drill. Ask Яке сьогодні число? and answer with the neuter day plus genitive month. Then make an event sentence and switch the day to genitive: Сьогодні восьме липня. Зустріч буде восьмого липня.
- Practice preposition bundles. Memorize useful chunks rather than isolated endings: на третьому поверсі, о другій годині, після п’ятої години, у двадцятому столітті.
