Numeral Categories in Ukrainian

In Brief

Ukrainian distinguishes exact counting from several related kinds of quantity. Двоє, троє count a group, двічі, тричі mean “twice, three times,” половина, третина name parts of a whole, and декілька, багато express an indefinite amount. The main grammatical challenge is choosing the following noun correctly: often genitive plural, as in двоє дверей and декілька людей, but genitive singular with fractions such as половина години.

Overview

Basic cardinal numerals answer скільки? “how many?” with an exact number: два, три, десять. By B2, you also need to distinguish whether that number presents its members as a group, counts repeated events, divides a whole, or leaves the amount deliberately vague. These distinctions are common in ordinary conversation, news, instructions, and formal writing.

The categories do not all behave alike. Some act much like numerals, while others are grammatically nouns or adverbs. A case is a change in a noun’s form that shows its role or relationship to another word. Quantity expressions frequently require the genitive case—the form used in phrases such as “of the people” or “of the water”—even where English leaves the noun unchanged.

English meaning is therefore only the first clue. “Two children,” “twice a week,” “half the book,” and “many questions” all contain quantity, but Ukrainian builds each phrase differently: двоє дітей, двічі на тиждень, половина книжки, багато запитань.

How It Works

Collective numerals: a group counted together

The central collective forms are:

Exact number Collective form Approximate English value
2 двоє two together / a group of two
3 троє three together / a group of three
4 четверо four together / a group of four
5 п’ятеро five together / a group of five
6 шестеро six together / a group of six
7 семеро seven together / a group of seven
8 восьмеро eight together / a group of eight
9 дев’ятеро nine together / a group of nine
10 десятеро ten together / a group of ten

These forms normally take a noun in the genitive plural:

  • двоє дітей — two children
  • троє студентів — three students (viewed as a group)
  • четверо кошенят — four kittens
  • двоє дверей — two doors

Their use is selective. They are especially natural with:

  1. People, particularly masculine or mixed groups: троє друзів, двоє колег. If a mixed group is intended, a collective numeral can avoid specifying gender.
  2. Children and young animals: двоє дітей, п’ятеро телят.
  3. Plural-only nouns—nouns normally used only in the plural, also called pluralia tantum: двоє дверей, троє ножиць.
  4. Personal pronouns: нас троє “there are three of us,” їх було четверо “there were four of them.”

Do not freely attach collective numerals to every noun. With ordinary objects, a cardinal numeral is generally the neutral choice: три столи, not троє столів. With an explicitly female group, standard usage normally prefers cardinal numerals: дві сестри, три студентки. Usage with profession nouns referring to women can vary, but the cardinal pattern is the safest learner choice.

Collective numerals can also stand alone. In Нас було п’ятеро, the group is identified by нас, so no counted noun is needed. This construction is extremely useful: Нас двоє means “There are two of us” or “It is the two of us.”

Multiplicative forms: how many times?

Двічі and тричі are adverbs—unchanging words that describe an action—meaning “twice” and “three times.” They answer скільки разів? “how many times?” Because they do not decline, their form stays the same regardless of the sentence around them.

Form Meaning Typical pattern
один раз once один раз на день
двічі twice двічі на день
тричі three times тричі на день
чотири рази four times чотири рази на день
п’ять разів five times п’ять разів на день

For numbers above three, Ukrainian normally uses a cardinal number plus раз: чотири рази, сім разів, двадцять один раз. Forms such as двічі and тричі are concise and neutral; два рази and три рази are also common, especially in speech.

A frequency period often follows на plus the accusative case (the form commonly used for a direct object and for certain time spans): двічі на тиждень, тричі на місяць, раз на рік. Multiplication uses the same forms: Двічі по три — шість “Two times three is six.”

Do not confuse тричі “three times” with утричі “threefold/by a factor of three.” Compare:

  • Я телефонував тричі. — I called three times.
  • Ціна зросла утричі. — The price tripled / rose threefold.

Fractional expressions: parts of a whole

The most common fraction words are nouns. They have their own gender and case, and the whole being divided normally follows in the genitive.

Fraction Ukrainian Example
1/2 половина половина години — half an hour
1/3 третина третина населення — a third of the population
1/4 чверть чверть години — a quarter of an hour
1/5 п’ята частина п’ята частина бюджету — one fifth of the budget
2/3 дві третини дві третини тексту — two thirds of the text
3/4 три чверті три чверті шляху — three quarters of the way

The denominator identifies the kind of part; in forms such as третина and чверть, it functions as the head noun. The whole is therefore genitive singular when it is one mass or whole: половина яблука, третина міста, чверть години. With a plural set, use genitive plural: половина студентів “half of the students.”

Fractions agree with verbs according to how the speaker frames the quantity. A singular fraction noun commonly takes a singular verb: Половина роботи вже готова “Half the work is already done.” With дві третини, the numeral phrase may lead to plural agreement: Дві третини учасників проголосували “Two thirds of the participants voted.” Agreement can vary with meaning and style, especially when the fraction refers to people.

Do not automatically use половина for English “half” in every structure. Before a measured quantity, пів is very common: пів години “half an hour,” пів кілограма “half a kilogram.” The word after пів is genitive singular. Половина години is also grammatical, but it presents the hour more explicitly as a whole divided in two.

Indefinite numerals and quantifiers: an unstated amount

Words such as кілька, декілька, багато, and мало do not give an exact number. They normally require the genitive case.

Quantifier Meaning Count noun Mass or abstract noun
кілька / декілька a few, several кілька книжок less usual with uncountable material
багато many, much, a lot of багато людей багато часу
мало few, little, not much мало помилок мало води
чимало quite a few, a considerable amount чимало питань чимало часу
скільки how many, how much скільки сторінок? скільки часу?
стільки that many, that much стільки справ стільки роботи

With countable things, the noun is usually genitive plural: декілька людей, багато запитань. With material or abstract nouns, it is usually genitive singular: багато води, мало часу. English distinguishes “many” from “much”; Ukrainian багато covers both.

Кілька and декілька overlap strongly. Both commonly mean “several” or “a few,” and кілька is often the shorter everyday choice. Neither means the same as деякі “some/certain”: кілька студентів emphasizes number, while деякі студенти selects an unspecified subset.

Examples in Context

Ukrainian English Note
Двоє дітей гралися у дворі. Two children were playing in the yard. Collective numeral + genitive plural
Нас у команді було троє. There were three of us on the team. Collective numeral with a pronoun
У кімнаті двоє дверей. There are two doors in the room. Plural-only noun
Вона тренується тричі на тиждень. She trains three times a week. Repeated event
Я двічі перевірив адресу. I checked the address twice. двічі modifies the action
Виробництво зросло утричі. Production tripled. Threefold change, not three separate events
Половина години минула непомітно. Half an hour passed unnoticed. Fraction noun + genitive singular
Ми прочитали дві третини книжки. We read two thirds of the book. Compound fraction
Чверть учасників не відповіла. A quarter of the participants did not respond. Whole expressed by genitive plural
Зустріч почнеться за пів години. The meeting will start in half an hour. пів + genitive singular
Декілька людей чекали біля входу. Several people were waiting by the entrance. Indefinite number + genitive plural
У нас залишилося мало часу. We have little time left. Uncountable noun in genitive singular
Вона поставила стільки запитань! She asked so many questions! Correlative quantity word
Чимало студентів обрали цей курс. Quite a few students chose this course. A substantial indefinite amount

Common Mistakes

Using a collective numeral with an ordinary object

  • Wrong: троє столів
  • Right: три столи
  • Why: Collective numerals are restricted to particular groups, including people, young creatures, pronouns, and plural-only nouns. An ordinary object normally takes a cardinal numeral.

Using the wrong noun form after a collective numeral

  • Wrong: двоє діти
  • Right: двоє дітей
  • Why: In this basic pattern, the counted noun is genitive plural, not nominative plural (the ordinary dictionary-style subject form).

Treating “times” as a noun after двічі or тричі

  • Wrong: тричі рази на день
  • Right: тричі на день or три рази на день
  • Why: Тричі already means “three times.” Adding рази repeats the same meaning.

Confusing repetition with degree

  • Wrong: Ціна зросла тричі when you mean that the final price became three times as high.
  • Right: Ціна зросла утричі.
  • Why: тричі counts three occurrences; утричі expresses a threefold degree or ratio.

Using plural after половина

  • Wrong: половина година or половина годин for one hour divided in half
  • Right: половина години
  • Why: The whole after a simple fraction is normally genitive singular, not the basic nominative form or a genitive plural. Genitive plural is appropriate when the whole is a group: половина студентів.

Copying English “many/much” directly

  • Wrong: choosing different Ukrainian quantity words merely because English distinguishes “many people” and “much time”
  • Right: багато людей, багато часу
  • Why: Ukrainian uses багато with both count and mass nouns; the noun’s genitive number carries the contrast.

Usage Notes

Collective numerals are not simply decorative alternatives to cardinal numbers. Троє друзів tends to present the friends as one set, whereas три друзі simply counts them. The difference is often subtle, and with eligible human nouns both constructions may be possible. In careful production, learn common combinations rather than replacing every два or три mechanically.

Higher collective forms exist, but frequency falls as the number rises. Двоє, троє, and четверо are the most useful productive forms. With larger groups, a cardinal number is often more natural. Collective forms are also declined when the whole phrase enters another case. You will encounter forms such as двох, трьох, чотирьох in oblique positions (positions other than the basic nominative), sometimes overlapping in form with cardinals. Context and the accompanying noun reveal the construction.

In time expressions, both compact adverbs and раз phrases are normal: двічі на рік and два рази на рік. The adverb is concise and works comfortably in both speech and writing. Декілька and кілька are likewise both standard; local and personal preferences may affect which one sounds more natural.

With fractions and indefinite quantities referring to people, verb agreement is not always mechanical. Singular agreement can emphasize the amount as one unit; plural agreement can emphasize the individuals. For learners, following a clear singular head such as половина with singular agreement is a reliable default, while plural numeral phrases such as дві третини учасників commonly allow plural agreement.

Beyond the Basics / Advanced Use

Formal texts often use decimal fractions. Ukrainian reads the integer and fractional parts explicitly: одна ціла п’ять десятих for 1.5 and дві цілих сім десятих for 2.7. The forms of ціла/цілих and the denominator reflect the number structure. In everyday measurements, speakers may instead use a familiar fraction or a noun-based expression where appropriate.

Collective numerals also interact with case and animacy—the grammatical distinction that often marks people and animals differently from objects. In accusative contexts involving people, forms such as Я запросив трьох друзів “I invited three friends” may correspond to either a cardinal or collective idea; the distinctive nominative троє друзів is no longer visible. This is why recognition should rely on the complete sentence, not on memorizing one isolated ending.

Several related adverbs express proportional change rather than repeated action: удвічі “twofold/twice as,” утричі “threefold,” and вдвічі більше “twice as much/many.” Compare Він телефонував двічі “He called twice” with Це коштує вдвічі більше “This costs twice as much.” This distinction is especially important in statistics, comparisons, and news reports.

Finally, quantity can influence meaning as well as grammar. Мало хто means “few people,” literally “few who,” while багато хто means “many people.” These fixed-looking combinations behave differently from a straightforward noun phrase such as багато людей, but belong to the same broader system of indefinite quantity.

Practice Tips

  1. Build four columns in your notes: group, repetition, fraction, and indefinite amount. Sort new phrases such as троє колег, двічі на день, третина шляху, and чимало справ by function and mark the following noun’s case.
  2. Practise pairs that force a choice: три столи / троє дітей, тричі / утричі, половина студентів / половина часу. Saying why each noun is plural or singular is more useful than memorizing the translation alone.
  3. When reading Ukrainian news or instructions, circle quantity words and find the noun they control. Check whether it is genitive singular, genitive plural, or absent because the numeral stands alone.
