Overview

Basic prepositions with fixed case requirements form the foundation of prepositional usage in Ukrainian. At the CEFR A1 level, learning a core set of prepositions along with their required cases enables you to express accompaniment, purpose, absence, and topics of conversation.

Unlike the dual-case prepositions (у/в, на) that change meaning based on case, the prepositions in this concept always require the same case. This makes them more predictable and easier to learn, though you still need to produce the correct case endings on the nouns that follow.

How It Works

Common Fixed-Case Prepositions

Preposition Case Meaning Example
з / із / зі instrumental with (accompaniment) з молоком (with milk)
без genitive without без цукру (without sugar)
для genitive for (purpose/benefit) для тебе (for you)
про accusative about про погоду (about the weather)
через accusative because of; across через дощ (because of rain)
замість genitive instead of замість кави (instead of coffee)
крім genitive except, besides крім мене (except me)
після genitive after після обіду (after lunch)
перед instrumental before; in front of перед домом (in front of the house)

З / Із / Зі Variants

These are euphonic variants of the same preposition:

  • з -- default: з братом
  • із -- before consonant clusters: із сестрою
  • зі -- before з, с, ш, щ: зі мною, зі школи

Examples in Context

Ukrainian English Note
з молоком with milk Instrumental
без цукру without sugar Genitive
для тебе for you Genitive
про погоду about the weather Accusative
після уроку after the lesson Genitive
перед домом in front of the house Instrumental
через дощ because of rain Accusative (cause)
замість чаю instead of tea Genitive
крім мене except me Genitive
каву з молоком без цукру coffee with milk without sugar Combined

Common Mistakes

Wrong case after preposition

  • Wrong: без цукор (nominative after без)
  • Right: без цукру (genitive)
  • Why: Без always requires genitive case.

Confusing з + instrumental and з + genitive

  • Wrong: Я з молока. (genitive for accompaniment)
  • Right: Я з молоком. (instrumental for "with")
  • Why: З + instrumental = with/accompaniment; з + genitive = from/origin.

Using про with wrong case

  • Wrong: про погоди (genitive after про)
  • Right: про погоду (accusative)
  • Why: Про always requires accusative case.

Usage Notes

These prepositions are among the most frequent words in Ukrainian. Learning them as "preposition + case" units prevents errors. The most common combination in everyday speech is probably "з + instrumental" for "with."

Note that "для" (for purpose/benefit) differs from "за" (for, in exchange/support). "Для тебе" = for you (a gift), "За тебе" = for you (a toast, in support of).

Practice Tips

  1. Preposition + case cards: Make flashcards: front = preposition + meaning, back = required case + example.
  2. Coffee order practice: Practice ordering with these prepositions: каву з молоком, без цукру, для мене.
  3. Preposition chains: Build sentences using multiple prepositions: "Після обіду йду для мами без парасольки."
