Advanced Conjunctions and Connectors in Tagalog
Mga Pangkat na Pangatnig
This article is part of the Filipino grammar tree on Settemila Lingue.
In Brief
Formal and carefully structured Tagalog uses samakatuwid (“therefore”), gayunpaman (“however/nevertheless”), samantala (“meanwhile/whereas”), and bukod sa (“besides/apart from”) to show how one idea relates to another. The first three commonly link whole statements; bukod sa normally introduces a noun, pronoun, or activity. These connectors are especially useful in essays, reports, presentations, news, and formal discussion.
Overview
At A1, connectors such as at (“and”), pero (“but”), dahil (“because”), and kaya (“so”) are enough for short conversations. At B2, you need to make longer arguments easier to follow: Is the next statement a conclusion, a concession, a simultaneous event, a comparison, or an additional point? Advanced connectors make that relationship explicit.
A clause is a group of words built around a statement or action. Some connectors in this article relate one complete clause or sentence to another. Others introduce a phrase rather than a complete statement. This distinction matters: Samakatuwid, kailangan nating kumilos is a complete conclusion, while bukod sa pagluluto is only an introductory phrase and must be completed by a main statement.
These forms belong mainly to careful written or formal spoken Filipino/Tagalog. They are not all equally formal, however. Samantala and bukod sa also occur naturally in ordinary speech, while samakatuwid and gayunpaman can sound more deliberate or editorial than everyday kaya and pero.
How It Works
The four core relationships
| Connector | Core relationship | Usual English equivalent | Typical structure |
|---|---|---|---|
| samakatuwid | conclusion or logical result | therefore, thus | Earlier evidence. Samakatuwid, conclusion. |
| gayunpaman | concession or contrast despite what came before | however, nevertheless | Earlier fact. Gayunpaman, contrasting fact. |
| samantala | simultaneous development or contrast between sides | meanwhile, whereas | Samantala, another event; or A, samantalang B. |
| bukod sa | addition, or separation/exclusion when context supports it | besides, in addition to, apart from | Bukod sa + noun/pronoun/activity, main clause. |
A discourse connector is a word or phrase that organizes the relationship between larger pieces of speech or writing. Samakatuwid and gayunpaman often work this way: they comment on the logic between complete statements rather than filling a role inside one clause.
Samakatuwid: drawing a conclusion
Use samakatuwid when the next statement follows as a conclusion from facts, reasons, or an argument already given.
Pattern: evidence or reason + samakatuwid + conclusion
Mataas ang gastos at kulang ang pondo. Samakatuwid, kailangan nating baguhin ang plano.
Costs are high and funding is insufficient. Therefore, we need to change the plan.
A comma usually follows samakatuwid when it opens a sentence or independent clause in careful writing. Unlike dahil (“because”), it does not normally introduce the cause itself. It points forward to the conclusion.
Compare:
- Dahil kulang ang pondo, binago namin ang plano. — Because funding was insufficient, we changed the plan.
- Kulang ang pondo. Samakatuwid, binago namin ang plano. — Funding was insufficient. Therefore, we changed the plan.
- Kulang ang pondo, kaya binago namin ang plano. — Funding was insufficient, so we changed the plan.
The meaning of the last two is close. Kaya is common and neutral in conversation; samakatuwid presents the result as a reasoned conclusion and is more at home in formal exposition.
Gayunpaman: contrast that does not cancel the first fact
Use gayunpaman when the second statement remains true despite an expectation created by the first. This relationship is called concession: you acknowledge one fact, then show that it did not prevent another fact.
Pattern: acknowledged fact + gayunpaman + unexpected or contrasting fact
Mahirap ang pagsusulit. Gayunpaman, maraming mag-aaral ang nakapasa.
The exam was difficult. Nevertheless, many students passed.
Both statements remain valid. Gayunpaman does not mean that the first one was false. It means “even with that being the case.” It commonly starts a new sentence and is followed by a comma.
Compare the levels of style:
- Mahirap, pero natapos namin. — It was difficult, but we finished it. (everyday)
- Mahirap, ngunit natapos namin. — It was difficult, but we finished it. (neutral to formal)
- Mahirap. Gayunpaman, natapos namin. — It was difficult. Nevertheless, we finished it. (deliberate, formal contrast)
Samantala and samantalang: time or contrast
Samantala has two important uses. It can mean “meanwhile,” introducing an event happening during the same general period. It can also set two people, situations, or trends against each other, much like “whereas” or “by contrast.” Context determines the reading.
Temporal pattern: one event. Samantala, another simultaneous development.
Inihahanda ng kusinero ang pagkain. Samantala, inaayos ng mga tauhan ang mga mesa.
The cook is preparing the food. Meanwhile, the staff are arranging the tables.
Contrastive pattern: statement A, samantalang statement B.
Mas gusto ni Ana ang tahimik na lugar, samantalang gusto ni Leo ang mataong lungsod.
Ana prefers a quiet place, whereas Leo likes a busy city.
The form samantalang contains the linker -ng, which joins it directly to the following clause. Sentence-initial samantala often behaves more independently and takes a comma. In real usage, the forms are related, but this practical distinction gives learners a reliable production pattern: use samantala, for a separate “meanwhile” transition and samantalang to link an explicit comparison within a sentence.
Do not assume that samantala always means exact simultaneity. In reports and narratives, “meanwhile” may simply shift attention to another development in the same broader period.
Bukod sa: adding another item
Bukod sa is followed by the item being added or set apart. That item may be a noun (a word for a person, thing, place, or idea), a pronoun, or an activity expressed with a Tagalog verb form.
Patterns:
- bukod sa + noun: Bukod sa sahod, may benepisyo rin ang trabaho.
- bukod sa + pronoun/name: Bukod sa kanya, sino pa ang sasama?
- bukod sa + activity: Bukod sa pagbabasa, nagsusulat din siya araw-araw.
In the additive meaning “besides/in addition to,” din/rin (“also”) or pa (“more/else”) often appears in the main clause. It is not mechanically required, but it makes the additive relationship particularly clear.
The English phrase “apart from” is ambiguous: it can mean either “in addition to” or “except for.” Bukod sa can also receive either reading in context. Look at the main clause:
- Bukod sa Ingles, nag-aaral din siya ng Tagalog. — Besides English, she is also studying Tagalog. (addition)
- Bukod sa isang pagkakamali, maayos ang ulat. — Apart from one mistake, the report is good. (exception)
When ambiguity would matter, make the intended relationship explicit. Maliban sa is a clearer choice for “except for,” while dagdag pa sa can strongly signal addition.
Position and punctuation
These connectors often occur first because they tell the reader how to interpret what follows. That position is useful, not mandatory in every possible sentence.
| Position | Example | Effect |
|---|---|---|
| New sentence | Natapos ang pagsisiyasat. Samakatuwid, maaari nang ilabas ang ulat. | Clearly marks a conclusion |
| After a semicolon | May mga panganib; gayunpaman, handa kaming magpatuloy. | Links two closely related complete statements |
| Inside one sentence | Si Mara ang magsasalita, samantalang ako ang maghahanda ng slides. | Directly compares two clauses |
| Introductory phrase | Bukod sa presyo, isaalang-alang natin ang kalidad. | Frames the added consideration |
A comma is especially helpful after sentence-initial samakatuwid, gayunpaman, and samantala. Do not put a comma automatically after bukod sa itself; place it after the complete introductory phrase: Bukod sa presyo, ...

Common Mistakes
Using samakatuwid to introduce a reason
- Wrong: Samakatuwid kulang ang pondo, binago namin ang plano.
- Right: Dahil kulang ang pondo, binago namin ang plano.
- Also right: Kulang ang pondo. Samakatuwid, binago namin ang plano.
- Why: Dahil introduces the cause. Samakatuwid introduces the conclusion drawn from it.
Treating gayunpaman as if it cancels the first statement
- Unclear: Hindi mahirap ang gawain. Gayunpaman, mahirap ito.
- Better: Mahirap ang gawain. Gayunpaman, natapos namin ito sa oras.
- Why: Gayunpaman normally accepts the first fact and adds an outcome that contrasts with the expectation it creates. A direct contradiction needs explanation, qualification, or correction.
Confusing samantala with habang
- Awkward for a close “while” clause: Samantala nagluluto ako, naghugas siya ng pinggan.
- Right: Habang nagluluto ako, naghugas siya ng pinggan.
- Also right: Nagluluto ako. Samantala, naghugas siya ng pinggan.
- Why: Habang directly introduces a time clause (“while I was cooking”). Samantala more often shifts attention to a parallel event, while samantalang can directly link contrasted clauses.
Leaving bukod sa without a complement
- Wrong: Bukod sa, mahalaga ang kalidad.
- Right: Bukod sa presyo, mahalaga ang kalidad.
- Why: Bukod sa needs an item after sa—here, presyo. The whole phrase identifies what is being added to or set apart.
Copying English punctuation too mechanically
- Weak: Kulang ang oras gayunpaman natapos namin ang ulat.
- Better: Kulang ang oras. Gayunpaman, natapos namin ang ulat.
- Why: In careful writing, punctuation should make the boundary between complete thoughts visible. A period or semicolon before gayunpaman, plus a comma after it, is usually clearest.
Usage Notes
Formal writing versus conversation
In casual conversation, speakers often prefer shorter connectors: kaya instead of samakatuwid, and pero instead of gayunpaman. That does not make the advanced forms unnatural; it means they carry a more organized, considered tone. You may hear them in speeches, interviews, classroom discussion, news commentary, and serious explanations as well as see them in writing.
Do not replace every kaya or pero just to sound advanced. Connector choice should match the relationship and register. A friendly exchange such as Pagod ako, pero sasama ako is natural. Recasting it with gayunpaman may sound unusually formal unless the speaker is being deliberate or humorous.
Tagalog does not map word-for-word onto English
English “however” has several grammatical uses. As a sentence connector, it may correspond to gayunpaman. But “however difficult” has a different structure and cannot be translated simply by inserting gayunpaman before an adjective. Likewise, English “while” can indicate time, contrast, or concession; Tagalog may choose habang, samantalang, or another construction depending on the intended relationship.
The safest method is to identify the logic first, then select the Tagalog connector. Avoid choosing solely from an English dictionary gloss.
Din/rin supports additive meaning
With bukod sa, the particles din/rin (“also”) and pa (“more, additional”) frequently reinforce addition:
- Bukod sa musika, interesado rin siya sa kasaysayan.
- Bukod sa pangunahing problema, may dalawa pang isyu.
This pairing often sounds more complete than translating “besides” and omitting every other additive signal.
Beyond the Basics / Advanced Use
Strong formal writing does more than insert impressive connectors. It builds a chain in which every connector accurately describes the relation between statements. A paragraph might present evidence with dahil, acknowledge a limitation with gayunpaman, contrast two findings with samantalang, and end with samakatuwid. Repeating one connector at the start of every sentence makes the structure monotonous even when each sentence is grammatical.
Related formal contrast markers include ngunit, subalit, and the more literary datapwat. They overlap with “but/however,” but they do not all behave identically in tone or sentence structure. At B2, it is enough to use ngunit and gayunpaman confidently and to recognize that subalit and datapwat belong to a more elevated range. Their fuller stylistic treatment belongs with formal and literary register.
Also notice samantala in argumentative writing. It may compare categories rather than narrate simultaneous actions:
Mas mataas ang bilang sa unang pangkat. Samantala, halos walang pagbabago sa ikalawang pangkat.
The figure is higher in the first group. By contrast, there is almost no change in the second group.
Finally, connector scope matters. Bukod sa isang pagkakamali modifies the judgment that follows; gayunpaman can relate the entire new sentence to a previous paragraph; and samakatuwid may summarize several earlier pieces of evidence. Advanced reading requires asking not only “What does this word mean?” but also “Which earlier idea does it connect to?”
Practice Tips
- Sort by relationship, not translation. Make four headings—conclusion, concession, parallel time/contrast, and addition—and place new examples under samakatuwid, gayunpaman, samantala, or bukod sa. This prevents English words such as “while” and “apart from” from controlling your choice.
- Rewrite one short paragraph in two registers. First use conversational kaya and pero. Then create a formal version with samakatuwid and gayunpaman where the logic supports them. Compare the change in tone.
- Complete connector frames aloud. Practice Samakatuwid, kailangan nating...; Gayunpaman, maaari pa ring...; A..., samantalang B...; and Bukod sa X, ... din.... Replace the content each time rather than memorizing only one sentence.
