Knowing and Understanding in Thai
รู้และเข้าใจ
This article is part of the Thai grammar tree on Settemila Lingue.
In Brief
Thai divides English know among three important verbs. Use รู้ (rúu) for information or facts, รู้จัก (rúu-jàk) for people, places, and familiarity, and เข้าใจ (khâo-jai) for understanding meaning or a situation. Put ไม่ before them to say ไม่รู้ “I don’t know,” ไม่รู้จัก “I don’t know/am not familiar with,” or ไม่เข้าใจ “I don’t understand.”
Overview
English uses know in several different ways: you can know an answer, know a person, know Bangkok, know what a sentence means, or know how to cook. Thai does not normally use one verb for all of these meanings. The choice depends on whether you mean possessing information, being acquainted or familiar, or grasping meaning.
This contrast appears at A1 because all three verbs are common in introductions, directions, classroom talk, and daily conversation. The beginner rule is straightforward: รู้ for facts, รู้จัก for familiarity, and เข้าใจ for comprehension. That rule will handle most early situations.
Thai verbs do not change form for person or tense. รู้ remains รู้ whether the subject is “I,” “she,” or “they.” Thai also often leaves out the subject—the person or thing being discussed—when context already identifies it. As a result, ไม่รู้ can be a complete and natural answer meaning “I don’t know.”
How It Works
The core three-way contrast
| Thai verb | Romanization | Core meaning | Typical object |
|---|---|---|---|
| รู้ | rúu | know; be aware of information | a fact, answer, news, or what/where/why clause |
| รู้จัก | rúu-jàk | know; be acquainted or familiar with | a person, place, name, organization, work, or subject area |
| เข้าใจ | khâo-jai | understand; grasp | words, a language, an explanation, feelings, reasons, or a situation |
An object here simply means what is known or understood. In ผมรู้คำตอบ “I know the answer,” คำตอบ “answer” is the object of รู้.
รู้: knowing information
Use รู้ when the knowledge can be treated as information in your mind: a fact, answer, location, reason, plan, or piece of news.
Basic pattern:
subject + รู้ + information
- ฉันรู้คำตอบ — I know the answer.
- เขารู้ความจริง — He/She knows the truth.
- คุณรู้ไหม — Do you know?
The information after รู้ can also be a whole clause—a group of words that contains its own message:
- รู้ว่าเขาอยู่ที่ไหน — know where he/she is
- รู้ว่าเขาจะมา — know that he/she will come
- รู้ทำไมเขาโกรธ is not the usual pattern; say รู้ว่าทำไมเขาโกรธ — know why he/she is angry.
The connector ว่า introduces the content of the knowledge. It often corresponds to English “that,” but English may omit “that” while Thai commonly retains ว่า before a statement: ผมรู้ว่าเขาไม่อยู่ “I know (that) he isn’t here.” With question content such as “where” or “who,” natural speech may use รู้ไหมว่า… or รู้ว่า… depending on sentence shape.
รู้จัก: knowing through acquaintance or familiarity
Use รู้จัก when you have encountered a person or are familiar with a place, name, organization, product, work, or area of knowledge.
Basic pattern:
subject + รู้จัก + person/place/thing
- ผมรู้จักเขา — I know him/her.
- คุณรู้จักร้านนี้ไหม — Do you know this restaurant?
- ฉันไม่รู้จักชื่อนี้ — I don’t recognize/am not familiar with this name.
With people, รู้จัก means that the person is not a stranger to you. It does not automatically mean that you are close friends or that you understand the person deeply. English I know him maps neatly to ผมรู้จักเขา, but English I know that he is busy requires รู้, not รู้จัก: ผมรู้ว่าเขายุ่ง.
With a place, รู้จัก means you know of it or are familiar with it. If you mean that you know a specific fact about the place, use รู้ instead:
- รู้จักเชียงใหม่ — know of / be familiar with Chiang Mai
- รู้ว่าเชียงใหม่อยู่ทางเหนือ — know that Chiang Mai is in the north
เข้าใจ: understanding meaning or reasons
Use เข้าใจ when someone grasps a message, explanation, idea, feeling, reason, or situation.
Basic pattern:
subject + เข้าใจ + message/person/situation
- ฉันเข้าใจคำถาม — I understand the question.
- เขาเข้าใจปัญหา — He/She understands the problem.
- ฉันเข้าใจคุณ — I understand you.
When the content is a statement, ว่า may introduce what is understood:
- ผมเข้าใจว่าคุณไม่ว่าง — I understand that you are not free.
This can report your interpretation rather than certain knowledge. Compare:
- ผมรู้ว่าเขาไม่มา — I know that he/she is not coming.
- ผมเข้าใจว่าเขาไม่มา — My understanding is that he/she is not coming.
Questions with ไหม
For a yes/no question, place ไหม (mǎi) at the end. The verb itself does not change.
| Statement | Question | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| คุณรู้ | คุณรู้ไหม | You know. → Do you know? |
| คุณรู้จักเขา | คุณรู้จักเขาไหม | You know him/her. → Do you know him/her? |
| คุณเข้าใจ | คุณเข้าใจไหม | You understand. → Do you understand? |
Subjects are often omitted, especially when speaking directly to someone: รู้ไหม, รู้จักไหม, and เข้าใจไหม are all normal.
Negation with ไม่
Put ไม่ immediately before the knowledge verb:
- ไม่รู้ — don’t know
- ไม่รู้จัก — don’t know / am not familiar with
- ไม่เข้าใจ — don’t understand
Thai does not need an equivalent of English do/does in these negatives. Do not add a separate verb merely because English says “do not know.”
For “not yet,” use ยังไม่:
- ยังไม่รู้ — don’t know yet
- ยังไม่เข้าใจ — don’t understand yet
To show that understanding has now been reached, add แล้ว:
- เข้าใจแล้ว — I understand now / Got it.
- รู้แล้ว — I know now / I already know.
Knowing how to do something
The concept’s informal pattern is รู้ + verb, and รู้จัก + verb also occurs:
- รู้ทำอาหาร — know how to cook
- ผมรู้จักทำอาหาร — I know how to cook.
However, everyday Thai often expresses a learned practical skill with verb + เป็น:
- ทำอาหารเป็น — know how to cook
- ว่ายน้ำเป็น — know how to swim
- ขับรถเป็น — know how to drive
The distinction is useful. รู้วิธีทำอาหาร literally means “know the method for cooking,” while ทำอาหารเป็น says you have the practical skill. รู้จัก + verb can also suggest knowing enough to act appropriately or remembering to do something, not merely possessing a skill. Beginners can recognize all of these, but verb + เป็น is often the safest natural choice for an acquired skill.
Do not confuse this with verb + ได้, which often expresses ability, possibility, or successful performance: ทำอาหารได้ can mean “can cook” under the circumstances. The boundaries overlap in conversation, but the focus differs: เป็น emphasizes learned know-how; ได้ emphasizes being able to do it.
Examples in Context

| คุณรู้ไหมว่าเขาอยู่ที่ไหน | khun rúu mǎi wâa khǎo yùu thîi-nǎi | Do you know where he/she is? | ว่า introduces what is known |
| ผมรู้ว่าเขาจะมา | phǒm rúu wâa khǎo jà maa | I know that he/she will come. | Knowledge of a fact or plan |
| ผมรู้จักเขา | phǒm rúu-jàk khǎo | I know him/her. | Personal acquaintance |

| เข้าใจไหม | khâo-jai mǎi | Do you understand? | Subject omitted naturally |
| ผมไม่เข้าใจคำถาม | phǒm mâi khâo-jai kham-thǎam | I don’t understand the question. | Lack of comprehension |
| ตอนนี้เข้าใจแล้ว | tɔɔn-níi khâo-jai lɛ́ɛo | Now I understand. | แล้ว marks the new state |
| ฉันเข้าใจว่าคุณเหนื่อย | chǎn khâo-jai wâa khun nʉ̀ai | I understand that you are tired. | An interpretation of the situation |
| ฉันเข้าใจความรู้สึกของคุณ | chǎn khâo-jai khwaam-rúu-sʉ̀k khɔ̌ɔng khun | I understand how you feel. | Emotional understanding |
| ผมรู้จักทำอาหาร | phǒm rúu-jàk tham aa-hǎan | I know how to cook. | Informal pattern included in this concept |
| เขาทำอาหารเป็น | khǎo tham aa-hǎan pen | He/She knows how to cook. | Common pattern for learned skill |
| ยังไม่รู้ว่าจะไปที่ไหน | yang mâi rúu wâa jà pai thîi-nǎi | I don’t know where to go yet. | ยังไม่ means “not yet” |
Romanization is only a pronunciation aid. Thai spelling contains tone and vowel information that romanization systems represent differently, so learn the Thai form together with audio whenever possible.
Common Mistakes
Using รู้ for a person
- Wrong: ผมรู้เขา
- Right: ผมรู้จักเขา — I know him/her.
- Why: Knowing a person means acquaintance, so Thai normally uses รู้จัก. Use รู้ when what follows is information: ผมรู้ว่าเขาเป็นใคร “I know who he/she is.”
Using รู้จัก for a fact
- Wrong: ฉันรู้จักว่าเขาอยู่บ้าน
- Right: ฉันรู้ว่าเขาอยู่บ้าน — I know that he/she is at home.
- Why: A statement introduced by ว่า is information, not a person or thing you are acquainted with.
Saying “know” when you mean “understand”
- Wrong: ฉันไม่รู้ประโยคนี้ when you mean that its meaning is unclear
- Right: ฉันไม่เข้าใจประโยคนี้ — I don’t understand this sentence.
- Why: รู้ concerns whether you possess information. เข้าใจ concerns whether the meaning makes sense to you.
Copying English do-support
- Wrong: adding an extra verb to imitate “do not know”
- Right: ไม่รู้
- Why: Thai forms the negative directly with ไม่ + verb. There is no equivalent of English auxiliary do here.
Treating รู้จัก as “be close to”
- Wrong assumption: ฉันรู้จักเขา means “I know him well.”
- Right interpretation: It normally means “I know him / I am acquainted with him.”
- Why: Add detail if closeness matters: ฉันรู้จักเขาดี “I know him well” or เราเป็นเพื่อนสนิทกัน “We are close friends.”
Overusing รู้ + verb for practical skills
- Less natural in many contexts: ฉันว่ายน้ำรู้
- Right: ฉันว่ายน้ำเป็น — I know how to swim.
- Why: Never place รู้ after the activity in that way. Although รู้ + verb and รู้จัก + verb occur, verb + เป็น is a very common expression for an acquired skill.
Usage Notes
Thai frequently drops ผม, ฉัน, คุณ, and other pronouns when participants are obvious. This makes short forms especially important. รู้ไหม can mean “Do you know?”, while รู้แล้ว can mean “I know already” or “Got it.” Tone of voice matters: a sharp รู้แล้ว! may sound impatient, much like “I know!” in English.
Polite particles can soften questions and answers. A male speaker may say เข้าใจไหมครับ and a female speaker เข้าใจไหมคะ. In polite answers, เข้าใจครับ/ค่ะ means “Yes, I understand,” while ไม่เข้าใจครับ/ค่ะ politely admits that you do not.
When checking whether a learner or listener has followed, เข้าใจไหม is direct and common. In some situations, a gentler check such as เข้าใจหรือเปล่า “Do you understand or not?” or an invitation to ask questions may feel less like a test. Politeness comes from the whole interaction, not from the verb alone.
ไม่รู้ is extremely common, but it may sound abrupt when said alone in a formal exchange. Add a polite particle or a fuller phrase: ไม่ทราบครับ/ค่ะ is a more formal “I don’t know.” ทราบ is a polite or formal counterpart of รู้ in many information contexts; it is not normally used for personal acquaintance in place of รู้จัก.
Beyond the Basics / Advanced Use
You do not need to master these distinctions at A1, but they explain forms you will meet later.
รู้จัก can mean more than simple acquaintance
Before a verb, รู้จัก may carry the sense “know enough to,” “have the sense to,” or “learn to.” For example, รู้จักคิด can mean “know how to think / use good judgment,” and รู้จักประหยัด means “know to be economical.” This is why รู้จัก + verb is not always a neutral equivalent of English “know how.” Context determines whether it describes skill, experience, or appropriate behavior.
เข้าใจว่า can signal an interpretation
เข้าใจว่า… may mean “understand that…” but also “be under the impression that…”. If the understanding proves wrong, Thai can say เข้าใจผิด “misunderstand / be mistaken”:
- ผมเข้าใจผิดว่าประชุมวันนี้ — I mistakenly understood that the meeting was today.
By contrast, รู้ว่า… presents the information more strongly as knowledge. This contrast helps speakers distinguish certainty from interpretation.
Related compounds
The core verbs appear in many useful compounds and phrases:
| Form | Meaning | Comment |
|---|---|---|
| ความรู้ | knowledge | ความ turns the idea into a noun—a word naming a thing or concept |
| ผู้รู้ | a knowledgeable person; one who knows | More formal than a basic sentence with รู้ |
| รู้ตัว | be aware of oneself / realize what one is doing | Meaning depends on context |
| รู้สึก | feel | A separate high-frequency verb; do not analyze it as simply “know + feel” in use |
| ความเข้าใจ | understanding | The noun formed from เข้าใจ |
| เข้าใจผิด | misunderstand; be mistaken | Literally an incorrect understanding |
| ทำความเข้าใจ | come to understand; study to understand | Common in formal explanations and instructions |
“Know someone” versus “understand someone”
The English sentences “I know her” and “I understand her” differ, and Thai makes the contrast especially visible:
- ฉันรู้จักเขา — I am acquainted with her/him.
- ฉันเข้าใจเขา — I understand her/him: the person’s motives, feelings, or situation.
- ฉันรู้เรื่องของเขา — I know about his/her situation or story.
These may all be true at once, but they describe different relationships to the person.
Practice Tips
- Sort examples by meaning. Make three columns headed รู้, รู้จัก, and เข้าใจ. Put “the answer,” “this teacher,” “this explanation,” “where the station is,” and “Bangkok” in the appropriate column, then build a Thai sentence for each.
- Practice three mini-dialogues. Ask รู้ไหม, รู้จัก…ไหม, and เข้าใจไหม. Answer each once positively and once negatively: รู้/ไม่รู้, รู้จัก/ไม่รู้จัก, เข้าใจ/ไม่เข้าใจ.
- Learn skills as chunks. Pair common activities with เป็น: ว่ายน้ำเป็น, ขับรถเป็น, ทำอาหารเป็น. Then compare each with ทำ…ได้ and notice whether the speaker emphasizes learned skill or present ability.
