Defining and Explaining in Thai
การนิยามและอธิบาย
This article is part of the Thai grammar tree on Settemila Lingue.
In Brief
Use X คืออะไร to ask what X is, X คือ Y to identify or define it, X หมายความว่า Y to explain its meaning or consequence, and X เรียกว่า Y to give its name. Thai normally leaves question words such as อะไร in the place where the answer would appear, so “What is tom yam?” is ต้มยำคืออะไร, not a word-for-word copy of English order.
Overview
At B1, you need more than sentences that simply identify people and objects. You also need to ask about an unfamiliar idea, explain what a sign means, introduce a technical term, or rephrase a conclusion. Thai handles these jobs with a compact group of expressions built around คือ, หมายความว่า, and เรียกว่า.
English uses “is” in many unrelated situations, but Thai does not have one all-purpose equivalent. คือ is especially useful for identity, definitions, and clarification. เป็น commonly classifies a person or thing by role, status, or type, while อยู่ handles location. This article develops the defining use of คือ, building on that basic distinction.
The same structures occur in ordinary conversation and in more organized explanations: lessons, presentations, interviews, instructions, and articles. They are also practical tools for learning Thai in Thai. With คำนี้หมายความว่าอะไร (“What does this word mean?”) and อันนี้เรียกว่าอะไร (“What is this called?”), you can ask a speaker to fill a gap in your vocabulary.
How It Works
Four core patterns
A clause (a group of words that makes a small statement) can fill the X or Y position in several of these patterns.
| Function | Pattern | Literal shape | Natural English meaning |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ask for a definition | X คืออะไร | X is what? | What is X? |
| Define or identify | X คือ Y | X is Y | X is Y / X means Y |
| Explain meaning or consequence | X หมายความว่า Y | X means that Y | X means that Y |
| Give a name | X เรียกว่า Y | X is-called Y | X is called Y |
Thai verbs do not change their form for person or number. The forms above therefore remain the same whether X is one thing or several things.
Asking what something is: X คืออะไร
Put the topic first and replace the unknown information with อะไร (“what”):
- ต้มยำคืออาหารไทยชนิดหนึ่ง — Tom yam is a kind of Thai food.
- ต้มยำคืออะไร — What is tom yam?
Unlike English question word order, Thai generally does not move อะไร to the front. This is sometimes called an in-situ question word, meaning that the question word stays where the answer belongs.
นี่คืออะไร asks “What is this?” when you want identification or an explanation. For a name specifically, นี่เรียกว่าอะไร is more precise: “What is this called?” For vocabulary, คำนี้หมายความว่าอะไร asks for the meaning of a word. These questions overlap, but they request different kinds of answers.
Defining and identifying: X คือ Y
Use คือ between a topic and the information that identifies or defines it:
- ประชาธิปไตยคือการปกครองที่ประชาชนมีส่วนร่วม — Democracy is a system of government in which the people participate.
- ปัญหาคือเราไม่มีเวลา — The problem is that we do not have time.
- คนที่โทรมาคือผู้จัดการ — The person who called was the manager.
The material after คือ can be a noun phrase (a noun and the words belonging with it), a name, or a whole explanation. In definition writing, a useful shape is:
term + คือ + broad category + distinguishing detail
For example, ทุเรียนคือผลไม้เมืองร้อนที่มีกลิ่นแรง first gives the category ผลไม้เมืองร้อน (“tropical fruit”) and then the distinguishing detail ที่มีกลิ่นแรง (“that has a strong smell”).
Do not treat คือ as a mandatory translation of every English “is.” Thai adjective statements normally need no copula (linking verb): กาแฟร้อน means “The coffee is hot.” Roles and occupations generally use เป็น: เขาเป็นหมอ means “He is a doctor.” คือ becomes natural when the purpose is identification or an explicit equation, as in คนที่เป็นหมอคือพี่สาวของฉัน (“The person who is a doctor is my older sister”).
Explaining a meaning: หมายความว่า
หมายความว่า links an expression, event, or fact to what it means. ว่า introduces the content of the explanation, much like “that” in “It means that...”:
X + หมายความว่า + explanation
- ไฟสีแดงหมายความว่าห้ามไป — A red light means that you must not go.
- ถ้าเขาไม่ตอบ ก็หมายความว่าเขาไม่สนใจ — If he does not reply, that means he is not interested.
The topic can be omitted when it is already obvious: หมายความว่าคุณเห็นด้วย means “It means you agree.” To ask for a meaning, replace the explanation with อะไร: ประโยคนี้หมายความว่าอะไร (“What does this sentence mean?”).
For the meaning of a quoted word, both of these shapes are useful:
- คำว่า “ตลาด” หมายความว่าอะไร — What does the word ตลาด mean?
- “ตลาด” หมายความว่าสถานที่ซื้อขายสินค้า — ตลาด means a place where goods are bought and sold.
คำว่า packages the following expression as a word or term. It is particularly common when discussing language.
Naming something: เรียกว่า and เรียก...ว่า...
Use X เรียกว่า Y when X is the thing and Y is its accepted name:
- อันนี้เรียกว่าตุ๊กตุ๊ก — This is called a tuk-tuk.
- อาหารแบบนี้เรียกว่าแกงเขียวหวาน — This kind of food is called green curry.
A related active pattern is เรียก X ว่า Y, “call X Y”:
- คนไทยเรียกรถแบบนี้ว่าตุ๊กตุ๊ก — Thai people call this kind of vehicle a tuk-tuk.
- เราเรียกส่วนนี้ว่าบทนำ — We call this section the introduction.
The order matters. In X เรียกว่า Y, X comes before เรียกว่า. In เรียก X ว่า Y, the thing being named sits between เรียก and ว่า.
Using คือ to clarify or restate
At the beginning of an explanation, คือ can work like “that is,” “the point is,” or “what I mean is.” The omitted topic is recovered from context:
- คือต้องทำใหม่ — That is, we have to do it again.
- คือผมยังไม่เข้าใจครับ — The thing is, I still do not understand.
This use is common in speech, but it is not always a clean one-word equivalent of English “namely.” Its effect depends on context: it may introduce a correction, supply the main point, or give the speaker time to frame an explanation.
Examples in Context
| Thai | English | Note |
|---|---|---|
| ต้มยำคืออะไร | What is tom yam? | Asks for a definition. |
| นี่คืออะไร | What is this? | Asks for identification. |
| คำนี้หมายความว่าอะไร | What does this word mean? | Asks about meaning. |
| เครื่องมือนี้เรียกว่าอะไร | What is this tool called? | Asks for its name. |
| ต้มยำคืออาหารไทยที่มีรสเปรี้ยวและเผ็ด | Tom yam is a Thai dish with a sour and spicy taste. | Gives category and features. |
| เป้าหมายของเราคือการลดค่าใช้จ่าย | Our goal is to reduce expenses. | A formal explanatory definition. |
| ปัญหาคือรถไฟหยุดวิ่งแล้ว | The problem is that the trains have stopped running. | A whole clause follows คือ. |
| หมายความว่าคุณเห็นด้วย | It means you agree. | The understood topic is omitted. |
| ป้ายนี้หมายความว่าห้ามถ่ายรูป | This sign means that photography is prohibited. | Explains a sign. |
| ถ้าร้านปิด ก็หมายความว่าเราต้องไปที่อื่น | If the shop is closed, that means we have to go elsewhere. | Draws a consequence. |
| อันนี้เรียกว่าตุ๊กตุ๊ก | This is called a tuk-tuk. | Gives a name. |
| คนไทยเรียกผลไม้นี้ว่ามังคุด | Thai people call this fruit mangosteen. | Active เรียก X ว่า Y pattern. |
| คือเราต้องตรวจข้อมูลอีกครั้ง | That is, we need to check the information again. | Introduces a clarification. |
| กล่าวอีกอย่างคือเขาไม่พร้อม | In other words, he is not ready. | A more organized restatement. |
Common Mistakes
Moving อะไร to the front as in English
- Wrong: อะไรต้มยำคือ
- Right: ต้มยำคืออะไร
- Why: Thai normally keeps อะไร in the position occupied by the answer. Start with the thing being defined.
Using คือ in every sentence containing “is”
- Wrong: กาแฟคือร้อน
- Right: กาแฟร้อน — The coffee is hot.
- Why: A Thai adjective can function directly as the predicate (what is said about the topic). No equivalent of English “is” is needed here.
Using คือ for an ordinary occupation statement
- Wrong: เขาคือหมอ when you merely mean “He is a doctor.”
- Right: เขาเป็นหมอ
- Why: เป็น normally expresses profession, role, or membership in a class. เขาคือหมอที่ช่วยฉัน is possible when identifying him as “the doctor who helped me”; the communicative purpose is different.
Confusing meaning with naming
- Wrong: คำนี้เรียกว่าอะไร when you can see the word and want its meaning.
- Right: คำนี้หมายความว่าอะไร
- Why: เรียกว่าอะไร asks what something is called; หมายความว่าอะไร asks what an expression communicates.
Losing the ว่า in the active naming pattern
- Wrong: เราเรียกส่วนนี้บทนำ
- Right: เราเรียกส่วนนี้ว่าบทนำ
- Why: In เรียก X ว่า Y, ว่า marks the name assigned to X.
Usage Notes
นี่, นี่คือ..., and อันนี้... can all point to something nearby. นี่คืออะไร is a direct identification question. อันนี้เรียกว่าอะไร is conversational and asks for the object's name. In more formal explanations, a noun such as สิ่งนี้ (“this thing”) or the exact topic is often clearer than informal อันนี้.
คือ is frequent in both writing and speech, but repeated sentence-initial คือ... can sound hesitant or loosely organized. That is normal in spontaneous conversation. In a report or presentation, name the topic explicitly or use a linking expression such as กล่าวอีกอย่างคือ (“in other words”) or นั่นคือ (“that is”).
Politeness particles do not change the defining structure. Add ครับ (often used by male speakers) or ค่ะ (often used by female speakers) where social context calls for politeness: คำนี้หมายความว่าอะไรครับ/คะ. In a polite question, female speakers normally use question particle คะ, not statement particle ค่ะ.
Thai writing does not require spaces between every word. Learn each expression as a recognizable chunk—หมายความว่า, เรียกว่า, คืออะไร—rather than trying to identify it by spaces alone.
Beyond the Basics / Advanced Use
More advanced explanations often embed these patterns inside longer sentences. A topic may itself contain a relative clause (a part beginning with ที่ that describes a noun): สิ่งที่สำคัญคือเราต้องเริ่มวันนี้ means “What is important is that we must start today.” Here, สิ่งที่สำคัญ is the complete topic and everything after คือ explains it.
Writers also use paired structures to organize an argument:
- สาเหตุคือ... — The cause is...
- ผลที่ตามมาคือ... — The result is...
- ข้อแตกต่างคือ... — The difference is...
- นั่นหมายความว่า... — That means...
There is a useful difference in emphasis between คือ and หมายความว่า. X คือ Y presents Y as the identity, definition, or central content of X. X หมายความว่า Y interprets X and can draw an implication from it. Compare ปัญหาคือเงินไม่พอ (“The problem is that there is not enough money”) with เงินไม่พอหมายความว่าเราต้องเปลี่ยนแผน (“Not having enough money means that we must change the plan”). The first identifies the problem; the second explains its consequence.
In careful definition writing, avoid circular definitions: ประชาธิปไตยคือระบบประชาธิปไตย gives the learner no new information. Give a broad category and then a useful distinguishing feature. This is a writing skill rather than a special Thai rule, but it makes these grammatical patterns much more effective.
Practice Tips
- Ask three different questions about one object. Point to an unfamiliar item and practise นี่คืออะไร, อันนี้เรียกว่าอะไร, and, if it has text on it, คำนี้หมายความว่าอะไร. Notice that identity, name, and meaning are different requests.
- Build two-part definition cards. Put a Thai term on one side. On the other, write X คือ + category + one distinguishing detail. Keep the definition short enough to say aloud naturally.
- Listen for the function, not just the word. When you hear คือ, decide whether it identifies something, introduces the main point, or restates an idea. When you hear หมายความว่า, listen for the interpretation or consequence that follows.
