Concessive Clauses in Thai

In Brief
Thai commonly expresses “although” with แม้ว่า or ถึงแม้ว่า, then marks the surprising result with ก็, ยัง, or ก็ยัง: แม้ว่าเหนื่อย ก็ยังไป “Although tired, (they) still went.” Use ทั้ง ๆ ที่ when the contrast feels especially striking, ถึงจะ for “even if/although,” and อย่างไรก็ตาม to connect whole statements as “nevertheless” or “however.”
Overview
A concessive clause presents a fact or possibility that might normally prevent something else, but does not. In “Although it was raining, we went out,” the rain creates an expectation that the outing will not happen; the second clause overturns that expectation. At B1, these patterns let you move beyond a simple contrast with แต่ “but” and explain relationships between complete ideas.
Thai concessive sentences often work as a pair. A marker such as แม้ว่า, ถึงแม้ว่า, ทั้ง ๆ ที่, or ถึงจะ introduces the obstacle or acknowledged fact. The main clause may then contain ก็ “then/even so,” ยัง “still,” ก็ยัง “even so, still,” or occasionally แต่ “but.” Not every marker is obligatory, but the paired pattern makes the logic clear.
Unlike English, Thai does not require an explicit subject in every clause when the person or thing is understood. It also does not change verb forms for tense. As a result, a natural Thai sentence may look compact: แม้เหนื่อยก็ยังทำงาน literally has the sequence “although tired, still work.” Time and the missing subject come from context.
How It Works
The basic two-clause pattern
A useful model is:
concessive marker + obstacle/fact + (ก็/แต่) + main result
When the meaning is “the result continues despite the obstacle,” ยัง or ก็ยัง is especially natural:
- แม้ว่า + clause, ก็ + clause — although X, Y nevertheless
- แม้ว่า + clause, ยัง + clause — although X, Y still happens
- แม้ว่า + clause, ก็ยัง + clause — although X, Y still happens; the contrast is explicit
- แม้ว่า + clause, แต่ + clause — although X, but Y
A clause is a group of words that makes a statement, such as ฝนตก “it is raining” or เราออกไปข้างนอก “we go outside.” Thai often omits a known subject, so เหนื่อย “(someone) is tired” can function as a complete clause in context.
Choosing the opening expression
| Form | Core meaning | Typical nuance and use |
|---|---|---|
| แม้ว่า | although, even though | Neutral and widely useful in speech and writing |
| ถึงแม้ว่า | although, even though | Fuller and slightly more emphatic than แม้ว่า |
| แม้ | although, even | Concise; common in writing and fixed or compact patterns |
| ทั้ง ๆ ที่ / ทั้งๆ ที่ | even though, despite the fact that | Highlights that the result conflicts strongly with a known fact |
| ถึงจะ | even if; although | Often presents a condition, possibility, or acknowledged limitation |
| ถึง...ก็... | even if/though...still... | Compact paired construction, especially in speech |
แม้ว่า and ถึงแม้ว่า are often interchangeable. The longer ถึงแม้ว่า can sound more deliberate, but it does not create a different tense or require a different verb form.
ทั้ง ๆ ที่ treats the first clause as an established fact and often carries surprise, criticism, disappointment, or admiration. For example, ทั้ง ๆ ที่รู้ว่าอันตราย เขาก็ยังทำ means that he did it despite actually knowing it was dangerous. This is stronger than merely placing two facts side by side.
ถึงจะ overlaps with “although,” but it can also look forward to a possible condition: ถึงจะฝนตก เราก็จะไป “Even if it rains, we will go.” Context tells you whether the speaker is acknowledging a fact or imagining a possibility. Thai does not mark this distinction by changing the verb.
The role of ก็, ยัง, and ก็ยัง
These short words do important connective work:
| Main-clause form | Effect |
|---|---|
| ก็ + result | Marks the corresponding or nevertheless-result: “even so/then” |
| ยัง + result | Says the action or state continues: “still” |
| ก็ยัง + result | Combines both ideas and strongly signals “even so, still” |
| แต่ + result | Gives a direct “but” contrast |
In แม้ว่าเหนื่อย ก็ยังไป, ก็ links the two parts and ยัง emphasizes persistence. A natural translation is “Although tired, (they) still went,” not the word-for-word “although tired, then still go.”
The comma is optional in ordinary Thai prose. It can help learners see the clause boundary, but spacing and punctuation in authentic Thai may be lighter than in English.
Clause order
The concessive clause usually comes first:
- แม้ว่างานจะยาก เราก็ต้องทำให้เสร็จ — Although the work is difficult, we must finish it.
It can also follow the main clause:
- เราต้องทำให้เสร็จ แม้ว่างานจะยาก — We must finish it, although the work is difficult.
When the concessive clause comes second, the main clause does not need ก็. ก็ normally points into a following result, so copying it mechanically into the first clause can make the sentence awkward.
จะ after a concessive marker
You will often see จะ after แม้ว่า, ถึงแม้ว่า, or ถึง:
- แม้ว่าเขาจะไม่เห็นด้วย เราก็ต้องตัดสินใจ
- ถึงจะยาก ก็ต้องลอง
Here จะ does not always mean literal future time. It helps frame a contemplated, acknowledged, or conditional situation. Translate the whole relationship rather than assigning “will” to every จะ. Compare แม้ว่าเขาไม่เห็นด้วย and แม้ว่าเขาจะไม่เห็นด้วย: both can mean “although he disagrees,” while the version with จะ gives the subordinate clause a more explicitly framed concessive feel.
อย่างไรก็ตาม connects statements
อย่างไรก็ตาม is a discourse connector (a word or phrase that links larger statements), not normally the opening of an “although” clause. It means “however,” “nevertheless,” or “in any case” and usually begins a new sentence or follows a completed statement:
งบประมาณมีจำกัด อย่างไรก็ตาม เราจะพยายามทำโครงการนี้ต่อไป
“The budget is limited. Nevertheless, we will try to continue this project.”
It is common in careful speech, reports, news, essays, and formal discussion. In casual conversation, แต่, แต่ว่า, or ถึงอย่างนั้น may sound less formal.
Examples in Context
| Thai | English | Note |
|---|---|---|
| แม้ว่าเหนื่อย ก็ยังไป | Although tired, (they) still went. | Compact; the subject is understood. |
| แม้ว่าฝนจะตก เราก็ออกไปข้างนอก | Although it was raining, we went outside. | จะ frames the acknowledged circumstance. |
| ถึงแม้ว่าเขาจะอายุน้อย แต่เขามีประสบการณ์มาก | Although he is young, he has a lot of experience. | แต่ introduces a direct contrast. |
| ถึงแม้ร้านจะไกล ฉันก็ยังไปกินบ่อย ๆ | Although the restaurant is far away, I still eat there often. | ก็ยัง stresses persistence. |
| ทั้ง ๆ ที่รู้ ก็ยังทำ | Even though (they) knew, (they) still did it. | Strong, potentially critical contrast. |
| ทั้ง ๆ ที่เมื่อคืนเขานอนดึก วันนี้เขากลับไม่ง่วง | Even though he went to bed late last night, today he is surprisingly not sleepy. | กลับ highlights an outcome opposite to expectation. |
| ถึงจะยาก ก็ต้องทำ | Even if it is difficult, it must be done. | Acknowledges an obstacle without accepting defeat. |
| ถึงจะไม่มีรถ เราก็ไปได้ | Even if we do not have a car, we can still go. | A possible condition; ได้ expresses possibility. |
| ถึงแพงผมก็ซื้อ | Even if it is expensive, I will buy it. | Short spoken pattern ถึง...ก็.... |
| เขายังมาทำงาน แม้ว่าจะไม่สบาย | He still came to work although he was unwell. | Concessive clause follows the main clause. |
| แม้ไม่มีใครช่วย เธอก็ทำสำเร็จ | Although nobody helped, she succeeded. | Concise แม้ is common in writing. |
| แผนนี้มีความเสี่ยง อย่างไรก็ตาม เราจะพิจารณาอย่างรอบคอบ | This plan carries risks. Nevertheless, we will consider it carefully. | Formal connector between statements. |
| อากาศไม่ดี แต่ถึงอย่างนั้นเราก็สนุกมาก | The weather was bad, but even so we had a great time. | ถึงอย่างนั้น means “even so/despite that.” |
Common Mistakes
Using an “although” marker and แล้ว as the main contrast pair
- Wrong: แม้ว่าฝนตก แล้วเราออกไปข้างนอก
- Right: แม้ว่าฝนตก เราก็ออกไปข้างนอก
- Why: แล้ว usually means “then,” “already,” or marks completion; it does not by itself signal the unexpected result. Use ก็, ยัง, ก็ยัง, or แต่ according to the meaning.
Treating อย่างไรก็ตาม like a clause conjunction
- Wrong: อย่างไรก็ตามฝนตก เราก็ไป
- Right: แม้ว่าฝนตก เราก็ไป
- Also right: ฝนตก อย่างไรก็ตาม เราก็ไป
- Why: อย่างไรก็ตาม connects a complete statement to what follows. It does not normally mean “although” directly before ฝนตก.
Using ทั้ง ๆ ที่ for a merely possible event
- Awkward: ทั้ง ๆ ที่พรุ่งนี้ฝนอาจตก เราก็จะไป
- Better: ถึงพรุ่งนี้ฝนจะตก เราก็จะไป
- Why: ทั้ง ๆ ที่ normally presents a fact taken as real or known. For “even if it may rain tomorrow,” ถึง...ก็... or ถึงจะ...ก็... fits the hypothetical meaning better.
Translating every จะ as “will”
- Misleading reading: แม้ว่าเขาจะเหนื่อย = “although he will be tired” in every context
- Better reading: แม้ว่าเขาจะเหนื่อย = “although he is/was tired,” or “even if he is tired,” depending on context
- Why: In a subordinate concessive clause, จะ can frame a situation rather than locate it in the future.
Overloading the sentence with connectors
- Heavy: ถึงแม้ว่าเขาจะเหนื่อย แต่ก็ยังแต่ทำงานต่อ
- Right: ถึงแม้ว่าเขาจะเหนื่อย แต่เขาก็ยังทำงานต่อ
- Also right: ถึงแม้ว่าเขาจะเหนื่อย เขาก็ยังทำงานต่อ
- Why: Thai permits paired markers, but each must have a job. Do not stack a second แต่ inside the same main-clause link.
Confusing แม้ว่า with แม้แต่
- Wrong for “although”: แม้แต่เขาเหนื่อย เขาก็มา
- Right: แม้ว่าเขาจะเหนื่อย เขาก็มา
- Why: แม้แต่ means “even,” as in แม้แต่เด็กก็เข้าใจ “Even a child understands.” It focuses an unexpected item; it does not introduce an ordinary concessive clause.
Usage Notes
แม้ว่า is a safe general choice. ถึงแม้ว่า is fuller and often more emphatic, while bare แม้ is compact and frequent in written language. In relaxed speech, speakers often shorten the structure to ถึง...ก็... or rely on แต่ when the relationship is obvious.
The spelling ทั้ง ๆ ที่ follows the convention of placing spaces around the repetition mark ๆ. You will also commonly encounter ทั้งๆ ที่ in informal digital writing. Both represent the same expression; recognizing both is useful, while careful edited prose generally favors consistent spacing.
Concessive meaning frequently carries attitude. ทั้ง ๆ ที่ can imply “despite knowing better,” so it may sound accusatory in ทั้ง ๆ ที่บอกแล้วก็ยังทำ “Even though (I) already told you, you still did it.” It can equally express admiration: ทั้ง ๆ ที่ลำบาก เขาก็ไม่เคยยอมแพ้ “Despite the hardship, he never gave up.” Tone and context determine the judgment.
English often insists on overt tense and subjects: “although she was tired.” Thai can leave both implicit: แม้เหนื่อย. Do not add เป็น before an adjective merely because English uses “be”: แม้ว่าเหนื่อย or, more naturally with an explicit subject, แม้ว่าเขาจะเหนื่อย—not แม้ว่าเขาเป็นเหนื่อย.
Beyond the Basics / Advanced Use
Concession combined with unexpected reversal
Thai can add กลับ before the unexpected predicate. Here กลับ does not mean physically “return”; it signals that reality turns out contrary to expectation:
- ทั้ง ๆ ที่เตรียมตัวมาดี เขากลับตอบไม่ได้ — Even though he had prepared well, he unexpectedly could not answer.
- แม้ราคาจะสูง ยอดขายกลับเพิ่มขึ้น — Although the price is high, sales have actually increased.
This pattern is valuable in analytical writing because it makes the expectation-versus-result relationship explicit.
No matter who, what, where, or how much
At a more advanced level, ไม่ว่า...ก็... means “no matter...” or “whether...or not”:
- ไม่ว่าใครจะพูดอะไร ฉันก็จะทำต่อไป — No matter what anyone says, I will continue.
- ไม่ว่าจะยากแค่ไหน เราก็ไม่ยอมแพ้ — No matter how difficult it is, we will not give up.
This belongs to the broader family of concessive meanings, but its structure is different from แม้ว่า. Learn ไม่ว่า...ก็... as a pair rather than translating ไม่ว่า word by word.
Conceding one point before limiting it
In discussion, Thai can acknowledge a point and then qualify it:
จริงอยู่ที่วิธีนี้ประหยัดเวลา แต่ก็มีความเสี่ยง
“It is true that this method saves time, but it also carries risks.”
จริงอยู่ที่...แต่... is more formal and argumentative than everyday แม้ว่า...ก็.... You may meet it in essays, debates, and opinion writing.
However vs. whatever the method
Do not confuse concessive อย่างไรก็ตาม “however/nevertheless” with a literal combination involving อย่าง “way/manner” in other structures. As a fixed connector, อย่างไรก็ตาม comments on the relationship between statements. Its exact English translation may be “however,” “nevertheless,” or “in any case,” depending on the argument.
Practice Tips
- Build paired sentences. Choose five obstacles—ฝนตก, เหนื่อย, ไม่มีเวลา, แพง, and อยู่ไกล—and complete each with แม้ว่า...ก็ยัง.... Then rewrite two with ถึงจะ...ก็... and notice how the meaning becomes more conditional.
- Sort facts from possibilities. When reading or listening, ask whether the first clause is treated as known fact or as a possible condition. Mark strong factual surprises with ทั้ง ๆ ที่ and possible obstacles with ถึงจะ.
- Listen for the second-half signal. Do not focus only on แม้ว่า. Train yourself to hear ก็, ยัง, ก็ยัง, แต่, and กลับ, because these words reveal how the speaker frames the result.
