In Brief
Thai does not turn every English passive into a passive sentence. Use ถูก or informal โดน when the subject undergoes an unwanted or unpleasant action, often in the pattern patient + ถูก/โดน + agent + verb. For favorable or neutral reception, Thai commonly uses ได้รับ + noun or ได้รับการ + verb, while เป็นที่ + verb describes something broadly known, accepted, or admired.
Overview
A passive sentence puts the person or thing affected by an action in the foreground. In เขาถูกตำรวจจับ (“He was arrested by the police”), เขา is the affected person, while ตำรวจ performs the action. Grammar books call these roles the patient (the person or thing affected) and the agent (the person or thing that acts).
At B1, the main challenge is not forming the Thai pattern: Thai verbs do not change their endings, so there is no equivalent of English was arrested or has been chosen. The challenge is choosing a construction that matches the speaker’s attitude, the kind of event, and the register. ถูก and โดน often present an event as unwelcome; ได้รับ presents something as received; and เป็นที่ describes a general reputation or response.
English-speaking learners tend to copy English passive sentences too literally. Thai often prefers an active sentence, an omitted subject, or a topic-comment sentence when the agent is unimportant. Learning advanced passives therefore means learning both how to build them and when not to use them.
How It Works
1. Adverse passive with ถูก
The basic extended pattern is:
patient + ถูก + agent + verb (+ complement)
In this pattern, the noun between ถูก and the action verb is the agent:
ผม + ถูก + เพื่อน + หลอก patient + passive marker + agent + verb “I was tricked by a friend.”
Because Thai has no verb agreement, tense is inferred from context or shown by time expressions and aspect words. For example, เมื่อวานเขาถูกขโมยขโมยกระเป๋า means “Yesterday his bag was stolen by a thief,” with เมื่อวาน fixing the time.
The agent can be omitted when unknown, obvious, or irrelevant:
- เขาถูกจับ — “He was arrested.”
- รถถูกขโมย — “The car was stolen.”
ถูก strongly favors events that harm, inconvenience, embarrass, restrict, or otherwise negatively affect the patient: being deceived, arrested, criticized, rejected, fined, or damaged. It can occur in speech and writing and is less conversationally marked than โดน.
2. Colloquial adverse passive with โดน
โดน uses the same main word order:
patient + โดน + agent + verb (+ complement)
- ฉันโดนหัวหน้าดุ — “I got told off by my boss.”
- เขาโดนเพื่อนแกล้ง — “He got picked on by his friends.”
The English expression get + past participle often conveys the feel better than a formal be + past participle: got scolded, got cheated, got bitten. โดน is very common in everyday conversation and online writing, but it is usually avoided in formal reports, official notices, and careful academic prose.
Both ถูก and โดน are also ordinary verbs with meanings related to contact or correctness. For instance, คำตอบถูก means “The answer is correct,” and ลูกบอลโดนหน้าต่าง means “The ball hit the window.” Context and the following clause show whether they are functioning as passive markers.
3. Favorable or neutral reception with ได้รับ
For benefits, recognition, support, permission, information, or other things conceptualized as being received, use:
recipient + ได้รับ + noun (+ จาก + source)
- เขาได้รับความรักจากทุกคน — “She is loved by everyone.” More literally, “She receives love from everyone.”
- โครงการได้รับการสนับสนุนจากชุมชน — “The project received support from the community.”
Here, the source is normally introduced by จาก (“from”). Do not insert it as a bare agent between ได้รับ and the noun in imitation of the ถูก + agent + verb pattern.
A formal and productive variant is:
recipient/patient + ได้รับการ + verb (+ จาก + source)
การ turns the following action into something noun-like (an action treated as a “thing”):
- ผู้สมัครได้รับการคัดเลือก — “The applicant was selected.”
- อาคารได้รับการปรับปรุงแล้ว — “The building has been renovated.”
ได้รับการ + verb is common in news, administration, business, and formal announcements. It is often neutral rather than strictly positive: renovation and approval may be favorable, but investigation or inspection can simply be official processes. The construction’s key idea is formal receipt of an action, not an absolute rule that every event is pleasant.
With a lexical noun—a regular noun carrying the main meaning—การ is unnecessary:
| Pattern | Natural example | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| ได้รับ + noun | ได้รับรางวัล | receive an award |
| ได้รับ + noun | ได้รับอนุญาต | receive permission / be permitted |
| ได้รับการ + verb | ได้รับการยอมรับ | be accepted / gain recognition |
| ได้รับการ + verb | ได้รับการแต่งตั้ง | be appointed |
4. General status with เป็นที่
The pattern เป็นที่ + verb describes a subject as the object of a broad public reaction or state:
topic + เป็นที่ + verb (+ ของ/ในหมู่ + group)
- เพลงนี้เป็นที่รู้จักทั่วโลก — “This song is known worldwide.”
- นักเขียนคนนี้เป็นที่ชื่นชอบของผู้อ่านรุ่นใหม่ — “This writer is popular with younger readers.”
Frequent combinations include เป็นที่รู้จัก (be known), เป็นที่ยอมรับ (be accepted), เป็นที่นิยม (be popular), เป็นที่สนใจ (attract interest), and เป็นที่ชื่นชอบ (be well liked). This pattern describes recognition, acceptance, popularity, or attention rather than a single event performed by one agent.
5. Choosing among the constructions
| Thai | English | Note |
|---|---|---|
| เขาถูกบริษัทปฏิเสธ | He was rejected by the company. | Adverse event; neutral-to-formal register |
| เขาโดนบริษัทปฏิเสธ | He got rejected by the company. | Same event, more conversational |
| เขาได้รับการว่าจ้างจากบริษัท | He was hired by the company. | Formal receipt of a favorable action |
| บริษัทนี้เป็นที่รู้จักในเอเชีย | This company is well known in Asia. | General reputation, not one event |
These are tendencies, not mechanical replacements for English be. Meaning comes first: ask whether the sentence presents harm, receipt, an official process, or a general status.
Examples in Context
| Thai | English | Note |
|---|---|---|
| ผมถูกเพื่อนหลอก | I was tricked by a friend. | เพื่อน is the named agent. |
| เขาถูกตำรวจจับเมื่อเช้า | He was arrested by the police this morning. | Adverse event with a time expression |
| ร้านถูกลูกค้าวิจารณ์เรื่องบริการ | The shop was criticized by customers for its service. | More neutral/formal than โดน |
| กระเป๋าของฉันถูกขโมย | My bag was stolen. | Agent omitted because it is unknown |
| ฉันโดนหัวหน้าดุต่อหน้าทุกคน | I got told off by my boss in front of everyone. | Natural conversational complaint |
| เด็กคนนั้นโดนหมากัด | That child got bitten by a dog. | Spoken adverse passive with an agent |
| เขาได้รับความรักจากทุกคน | She is loved by everyone. | Literally receives love from everyone |
| นักเรียนได้รับรางวัลจากโรงเรียน | The student received an award from the school. | ได้รับ + noun |
| ข้อเสนอได้รับการอนุมัติแล้ว | The proposal has been approved. | Formal process; แล้ว marks completion |
| ผู้สมัครสามคนได้รับการคัดเลือก | Three applicants were selected. | Formal passive, agent omitted |
| หมู่บ้านได้รับความเสียหายจากน้ำท่วม | The village was damaged by flooding. | Negative meaning, but lexical phrase ได้รับความเสียหาย |
| เพลงนี้เป็นที่รู้จักทั่วประเทศ | This song is known throughout the country. | Broad recognition |
| อาหารร้านนี้เป็นที่ชื่นชอบของนักท่องเที่ยว | This restaurant’s food is popular with tourists. | ของ identifies the group responding |
| เรื่องนี้กำลังเป็นที่สนใจของสังคม | This issue is attracting public interest. | กำลัง presents an ongoing state/trend |
Common Mistakes
Treating ถูก as a neutral equivalent of English “be”
- Unnatural for the intended praise: เขาถูกทุกคนรัก
- Better: เขาได้รับความรักจากทุกคน
- Why: ถูก normally adds an adverse or unwanted perspective. Love is more naturally framed as something received, unless a special context deliberately presents the love as burdensome or unwanted.
Using โดน in an official sentence
- Too casual: ผู้สมัครโดนคัดเลือกให้เป็นตัวแทน
- Better: ผู้สมัครได้รับการคัดเลือกให้เป็นตัวแทน
- Why: โดน sounds conversational and often adverse. Selection as a representative calls for the formal, favorable ได้รับการคัดเลือก.
Putting a bare agent after ได้รับ
- Wrong: เขาได้รับทุกคนความรัก
- Right: เขาได้รับความรักจากทุกคน
- Why: With ได้รับ, state the received noun first and introduce its source with จาก. The bare-agent slot belongs to patterns such as ถูกเพื่อนหลอก.
Adding การ before every noun
- Wrong: เขาได้รับการรางวัล
- Right: เขาได้รับรางวัล
- Why: รางวัล is already a noun (“award”). Use การ when packaging an action as a noun-like unit, as in ได้รับการคัดเลือก.
Copying an English passive when Thai prefers an active clause
- Stiff: ภาษาไทยถูกพูดโดยคนจำนวนมาก
- More natural: คนจำนวนมากพูดภาษาไทย
- Why: The active sentence simply says that many people speak Thai. There is no adverse effect, official receipt, or special reason to foreground Thai as an affected patient.
Using เป็นที่ for a single completed event
- Wrong for one specific approval: ข้อเสนอเป็นที่อนุมัติเมื่อวานนี้
- Right: ข้อเสนอได้รับการอนุมัติเมื่อวานนี้
- Why: เป็นที่ normally describes a wider state or response. A dated approval is a particular completed process, so ได้รับการอนุมัติ is appropriate.
Usage Notes
Register: ถูก versus โดน
In ordinary conversation, โดน is vivid and personal. Speakers often use it while recounting something that happened to them: โดนโกง (“got cheated”), โดนฝน (“got caught in the rain”), or โดนยกเลิก (“got canceled”). ถูก is also normal in speech, but it fits careful narration, news, and factual reporting more easily. In formal prose, prefer ถูก for clearly adverse actions and ได้รับการ for institutional processes.
Register does not erase meaning. Replacing โดน with ถูก makes a sentence less colloquial, but it does not normally make the event favorable. Likewise, ได้รับการ sounds formal but can introduce an unwelcome process: บริษัทได้รับการตรวจสอบ means “The company was investigated/inspected.”
Agents: bare noun or จาก
With ถูก/โดน, a named agent normally stands directly before the verb:
- เขาถูกครูตำหนิ — “He was criticized by the teacher.”
With ได้รับ, a source or responsible body is commonly introduced by จาก:
- เขาได้รับคำชมจากครู — “He received praise from the teacher.”
With เป็นที่, groups are often attached with ของ or a phrase such as ในหมู่ (“among”): เป็นที่นิยมในหมู่วัยรุ่น (“popular among teenagers”).
Pronouns and omitted information
Thai often omits a subject or agent when context supplies it. ถูกไล่ออกแล้ว can mean “(He/she/I) has already been fired,” depending on the conversation. Do not force an English pronoun into every Thai sentence. At the same time, include the agent when it changes the message or contrasts one actor with another.
Beyond the Basics / Advanced Use
Negative meaning is a tendency, not a logical law
Learner rules often label ถูก “negative” and ได้รับ “positive.” That shortcut is useful, but actual usage is organized by conventional combinations as well as emotion. ได้รับความเสียหาย (“sustain damage”) is clearly negative, yet ได้รับ is natural because ความเสียหาย is treated as something incurred. ถูกเลือก (“be chosen”) also occurs, especially where selection is presented neutrally, while ได้รับเลือก or ได้รับการคัดเลือก can highlight recognition or an official process.
Therefore, learn frequent chunks rather than assigning every verb to one box:
- ถูกจับ / ถูกขโมย / ถูกปฏิเสธ — arrested / stolen / rejected
- ได้รับรางวัล / ได้รับอนุญาต / ได้รับความช่วยเหลือ — receive an award / be permitted / receive help
- ได้รับการแต่งตั้ง / ได้รับการอนุมัติ — be appointed / be approved
- เป็นที่รู้จัก / เป็นที่ยอมรับ / เป็นที่นิยม — known / accepted / popular
โดย in formal writing
Formal Thai may use โดย to introduce the doer or means, especially in translations, reports, and administrative prose: โครงการได้รับการสนับสนุนโดยหน่วยงานของรัฐ (“The project was supported by government agencies”). In many ordinary sentences, จาก sounds more natural when the meaning is a source, and an active rewrite may be clearer still: หน่วยงานของรัฐสนับสนุนโครงการ.
Avoid assuming that English by always equals โดย. In เขาถูกตำรวจจับ, the agent ตำรวจ needs no preposition. In ได้รับความช่วยเหลือจากเพื่อน, จาก presents the source of help.
Impersonal formal statements
More advanced formal Thai expands เป็นที่ into impersonal expressions such as เป็นที่เชื่อกันว่า... (“It is generally believed that...”) and uses constructions such as ถือว่า... (“is considered...” / “one considers...”). These allow a writer to report a shared belief without naming one believer. They belong especially to formal passive and impersonal style, but recognizing them helps you see how Thai avoids copying an English passive word for word.
Deliberate marked uses
A speaker can use an adverse marker with something normally positive for irony, humor, or to show that the attention was unwanted. For example, being “loved” may be framed negatively if the affection is intrusive. Such choices depend heavily on context; they are expressive exceptions, not the safest default for learners.
Practice Tips
- Sort by viewpoint, not by English grammar. Take ten English passive sentences and label each one “harm,” “receipt/process,” “general status,” or “better active.” Then choose ถูก/โดน, ได้รับ, เป็นที่, or an active Thai sentence.
- Build paired register examples. Retell an unpleasant event first as conversation with โดน, then as a short news report with ถูก. This makes the register difference memorable without changing the core roles.
- Learn complete collocations. Record phrases such as ได้รับการอนุมัติ and เป็นที่ยอมรับ, not isolated markers. When listening or reading, underline the agent pattern too: bare noun after ถูก/โดน, but often จาก after ได้รับ.
