In Brief

Academic and technical Māori is not simply English terminology placed inside a Māori sentence. It combines established specialist vocabulary with ordinary Māori grammar: particles still mark relationships, definitions often use ko ... te ..., and processes are commonly expressed with verb-based phrases. The key skill is to learn each term together with the sentence pattern used by its field.

Overview

Reo pāngarau me te pūtaiao refers here to Māori used for mathematics, science, research, and formal education. At C1, the challenge is less about learning a completely new grammar than about using familiar structures with greater precision. A technical text must define its terms, connect claims logically, describe methods clearly, and avoid ambiguity about who did what and under which conditions.

This register matters especially in Māori-medium education, but it also appears in reports, university work, presentations, educational resources, and discussions of mātauranga Māori. You will meet established terms such as pāngarau “mathematics,” pūtaiao “science,” raraunga “data,” and rangahau “research.” Terminology can differ by subject, institution, or publication, so a trusted glossary and the conventions of your own learning community are more reliable than inventing a direct translation.

English often compresses several nouns into one long label, as in “water-quality measurement method.” Māori usually makes the relationships more explicit with particles, clauses, and context. That difference is central: accurate technical Māori depends not only on knowing specialist words, but also on building a transparent Māori sentence around them.

How It Works

1. Keep the grammatical frame visible

Māori uses particles—short grammatical words such as ko, he, te, ngā, i, ki, and —to show how parts of a sentence relate. Technical vocabulary does not cancel these patterns.

In Ko X te Y, X is the identified item and Y is the description that identifies it. In He X te Y, Y is classified as an example of X. The contrast is useful in definitions:

  • Ko te pūtaiao tēnei marau. — “This subject is science.” The label is specific.
  • He pūtaiao te mātai arorangi. — “Astronomy is a science.” Astronomy is placed in a class.

2. Learn terms as lexical units, not as guesses

A lexical unit is a word or fixed expression learned as one item. Academic Māori includes older words used in specialised senses, compounds, and newer terms developed for modern fields. Their meaning is set by actual educational and professional use, not merely by what each part seems to mean.

Some words cover a wider range than their nearest English equivalent. Hua, for example, can mean an outcome or product as well as a mathematical result. Always check the surrounding phrase: te hua o te tātaitai means “the result of the calculation,” while another context may require a different English rendering.

3. Turn actions into topics with te and derived nouns

Academic writing frequently discusses an action as an abstract process. English often does this with nouns ending in -tion or -ment: “measurement,” “calculation,” “analysis.” Māori can use a recognised derived noun such as tātaitanga, or a phrase in which te introduces the activity as a topic. This is nominalisation—treating an action or description like a thing that can be discussed.

  • te rangahau i te kaupapa — researching the topic / the research into the topic
  • te ine i te pāmahana — measuring the temperature / the measurement of temperature
  • te kohikohi raraunga — collecting data / data collection

Do not assume that every English abstract noun needs a newly coined Māori noun. A clear verbal phrase is often more natural and more transparent. When a field has an established noun, however, use that conventional term consistently.

4. Express relationships instead of copying English noun piles

English technical labels can place several nouns side by side. Māori commonly unpacks such relationships with o/a possession, location phrases, or relative clauses.

  • ngā hua o te rangahau — the results of the research
  • te pāmahana o te wai — the temperature of the water
  • ngā raraunga i kohia i te whakamātautau — the data collected in the experiment
  • te tikanga mō te ine i te roa — the method for measuring length

The choice between the a-category and o-category possessive patterns is not merely a translation of English “of.” Broadly, o commonly marks relationships outside the possessor’s control or inherent relationships, while a commonly occurs with created, controlled, or agentive relationships. The full system is broader than technical register, so check established phrases rather than choosing from an English gloss alone.

5. Report methods with precise participants

Scientific and technical prose often focuses on the procedure rather than the researcher. Māori passive forms can do this effectively. A passive clause presents the affected thing as the main participant: “the water was measured” rather than “we measured the water.”

  • I inehia te pāmahana o te wai. — “The temperature of the water was measured.”
  • I kohia ngā raraunga i ngā kura e toru. — “The data was collected from three schools.”
  • Ka whakatauritea ngā hua. — “The results will be compared.”

Use an agent phrase with e only when the doer matters: I kohia ngā raraunga e ngā ākonga “The data was collected by the students.” Passive endings vary by verb and established usage; do not create an ending by analogy unless you know the correct form.

6. Link purpose, conditions, and consequences

C1 academic prose depends on complex clauses—sentences containing more than one linked proposition. Useful connectors include:

For example: Hei ine i te pāmahana, whakamahia ai tēnei taputapu means “This instrument is used to measure the temperature.” The hei phrase states the purpose, while the rest identifies the procedure. In longer texts, use connectors to make the reasoning explicit, but do not repeat one connector mechanically in every sentence.

7. State mathematical relationships as relationships

Mathematical Māori requires both terminology and a clear logical structure. Numbers, symbols, and formulae may remain visually compact, but the surrounding Māori should state what the quantities represent.

  • Ko te hua o te tātaitai ko te tekau mā rua. — “The result of the calculation is twelve.”
  • He nui ake te ono i te whā. — “Six is greater than four.”
  • E rua tekau mā rima ōrau o ngā ākonga. — “Twenty-five percent of the students.”

The marker i in comparisons such as nui ake ... i ... introduces the comparison point. This differs from English, where “than” performs that job. When reading a formula aloud, follow the terminology used in your course or institution rather than translating symbol names spontaneously.

Common Mistakes

Translating an English noun stack word for word

  • Wrong: te wai kounga ine tikanga
  • Right: te tikanga mō te ine i te kounga o te wai
  • Why: The corrected phrase states the relationships: a method for measuring the quality of the water. A chain of unmarked nouns copies English structure and leaves those relationships unclear.

Dropping particles around technical terms

  • Wrong: Kei te rangahau ia te kaupapa.
  • Right: Kei te rangahau ia i te kaupapa.
  • Why: The object of rangahau is marked here by i. Specialist vocabulary still follows Māori clause grammar.

Treating he and ko as interchangeable forms of “is”

  • Wrong: He te pūtaiao tēnei marau.
  • Right: Ko te pūtaiao tēnei marau.
  • Why: Māori has no single all-purpose equivalent of English “is.” Ko identifies a specific label; he classifies something as a member of a category and is not followed by te in the form he te ....

Inventing a technical word from English

  • Wrong: using an improvised calque when an established subject term exists
  • Right: check the glossary, textbook, curriculum, or terminology preferred by the relevant Māori-medium community
  • Why: A plausible-looking compound may not have the accepted meaning. Consistency is part of technical accuracy.

Using an active clause when the affected item should be central

  • Less suitable in a methods section: I ine mātou i te pāmahana. — “We measured the temperature.”
  • Often more suitable: I inehia te pāmahana. — “The temperature was measured.”
  • Why: Both can be grammatical. The passive version keeps attention on the procedure and measured quantity. This is a register choice, not a ban on mātou.

Making a claim stronger than the evidence

  • Too absolute: E whakaatu ana ngā raraunga he tika tonu te ariā. — “The data shows that the theory is always correct.”
  • More cautious: E tautoko ana ngā raraunga i te ariā. — “The data supports the theory.”
  • Why: Academic precision includes the strength of the claim. Tautoko does not claim more than the evidence can establish.

Usage Notes

There is no single style shared unchanged by every mathematics class, scientific discipline, iwi, university, and publication. Regional language preferences and institutional terminology both matter. If you are writing for a particular programme, use its current resources and keep a term list for the document. On first use, a short definition can prevent confusion where more than one term circulates.

Formal does not have to mean opaque. A short verbal clause may be clearer than a heavy abstract noun phrase. Likewise, passive clauses are useful in methods and reports, but a writer should name people when responsibility, participation, or knowledge ownership matters. Do not copy the impersonal style of English research writing automatically.

Macrons are meaningful parts of written Māori, not optional decoration. Compare forms carefully and preserve macrons in terminology, headings, data labels, and references. Also distinguish te reo Māori as a language from Māori used adjectivally in an English explanation; within Māori prose, follow Māori conventions rather than English capitalisation habits.

Academic work involving mātauranga Māori may require more than technical translation. The framing of knowledge, relationships to people and place, and appropriate acknowledgement of sources can be integral to the work. Language accuracy cannot replace cultural and community authority.

Beyond the Basics: Building an Academic Argument

At advanced level, technical register operates across a whole paragraph, not just within isolated sentences. A clear argument often moves through four functions:

  1. Kaupapa: establish the topic or research question.
  2. Tukanga: explain the method or process.
  3. Hua: present the findings or result.
  4. Whakatau: state a conclusion while recognising limits.

Cohesion—the way sentences visibly connect—can be created through repeated key terms, demonstratives such as tēnei “this,” and connectors such as nō reira “therefore.” Repetition is not always poor style in a technical text: repeating an exact term can be safer than replacing it with a near-synonym that changes the meaning.

Advanced writers also control stance, meaning how strongly they commit to a claim. Compare e whakaatu ana “shows,” e tohu ana “indicates,” and e tautoko ana “supports.” These are not mechanically interchangeable. The best choice depends on what the evidence actually permits. Similarly, tērā pea can mark possibility rather than certainty. Precision includes openly stating uncertainty.

When defining a new term, move from the known category to the distinguishing feature. A definition can classify with he, identify with ko, and then add a relative clause:

  • Māori: He tukanga te ine hei whakataurite i tētahi rahinga ki tētahi waeine kua whakaritea.
  • English: “Measurement is a process for comparing a quantity with an established unit.”

Before using such a sentence in assessed or published work, verify both the disciplinary terminology and the Māori phrasing with authoritative resources or a knowledgeable speaker. At C1, good editing is part of language competence.

Practice Tips

  1. Build phrase cards, not word cards. Record ngā hua o te rangahau, te ine i te pāmahana, and e tautoko ana ngā taunakitanga i ... rather than memorising hua, ine, and taunakitanga alone.
  2. Rewrite one short method twice. First use active clauses with mātou; then rewrite it with passive clauses. Decide which participants each version foregrounds and whether that suits the purpose.
  3. Annotate a real Māori-medium text. Mark definitions, purpose phrases with hei, passive verbs, evidence words, and logical connectors. Then write a five-sentence summary using the same patterns, without copying its sentences.
