Degree/Extent Expressions in Korean
정도 표현
languages.seo.contextNote
Overview
Degree and extent expressions at the CEFR B1 level allow you to quantify or compare the intensity of actions and states. Key patterns include -(으)ㄹ 정도로 (to the extent that), -(으)ㄹ 만큼 (as much as), and the adverbial -게 (in a ... manner). These patterns add precision and expressiveness to Korean sentences.
How It Works
| Pattern | Meaning | Example |

| -(으)ㄹ 정도로 | to the extent that | 울 정도로 슬펐어요 (sad to the point of crying) |
| -(으)ㄹ 만큼 | as much as | 먹을 만큼 먹었어요 (ate as much as could) |
| -게 | adverbial ending | 빠르게 (quickly), 조용하게 (quietly) |
| 처럼/같이 | like, similar to | 아이처럼 (like a child) |

Common Mistakes
Confusing -게 with -히 adverbs
- Wrong: Always using -게 for all adverbs
- Right: Some adjectives have dedicated -히 adverbs: 조용히 (quietly), 깨끗이 (cleanly)
- Why: -게 is productive (works with any adjective), but memorized -히 forms are more natural for certain words.
Using 만큼 without proper modifier
- Wrong: 먹다 만큼
- Right: 먹을 만큼 or 먹는 만큼
- Why: 만큼 requires a modifier form: -(으)ㄹ 만큼 (future/general) or -는 만큼 (present ongoing).
Usage Notes
These patterns are essential for natural, expressive Korean. The adverbial -게 is one of the most frequently used patterns, appearing in countless everyday expressions. -정도 and -만큼 add sophistication to descriptions. Korean speakers frequently use hyperbolic expressions like 죽을 만큼 (to a death-like extent) for emphasis.
Practice Tips
- Convert adjectives to adverbs with -게: 빠르게, 느리게, 크게, 작게, 조용하게.
- Practice comparisons with 만큼: 형만큼 키가 커요 (as tall as my brother).
- Use 정도 to describe intensity of experiences.
