Before/After 전에/후에 in Korean
전에/후에
languages.seo.contextNote
Overview
The time expressions 전에 (before) and 후에 (after) allow you to sequence events in Korean, a key CEFR A2 pattern. When used with verbs, "before doing" is stem + 기 전에, and "after doing" is stem + (으)ㄴ 후에. They can also follow time nouns directly: 수업 전에 (before class), 수업 후에 (after class).
These expressions are essential for describing routines, giving instructions, and narrating sequences of events. They build on the verb stem and nominalization patterns that become increasingly important at higher levels.
How It Works
| Pattern | Formation | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Before doing | stem + 기 전에 | 먹기 전에 (before eating) |
| After doing | stem + (으)ㄴ 후에 | 먹은 후에 (after eating) |
| Before (noun) | noun + 전에 | 수업 전에 (before class) |
| After (noun) | noun + 후에 | 수업 후에 (after class) |
Note: 후에 can be replaced with 뒤에 or 다음에 with similar meaning.

Common Mistakes
Using past tense with 기 전에
- Wrong: 먹었기 전에
- Right: 먹기 전에
- Why: The action before 전에 has not happened yet, so no past tense is used on the -기 clause.
Forgetting the past modifier -(으)ㄴ with 후에
- Wrong: 먹기 후에
- Right: 먹은 후에
- Why: "After doing" uses the past modifier form because the action is completed before the next event.
Confusing 전 (before/ago) meanings
- Wrong: Not recognizing 5분 전에 as "5 minutes ago"
- Right: With time durations, 전에 means "ago": 3일 전에 (3 days ago)
- Why: 전에 means both "before (doing)" and "ago" depending on context.
Usage Notes
전에 and 후에 are versatile and appear in both casual and formal contexts. In spoken Korean, 후에 is sometimes replaced with the more casual 다음에 (next/after). The particle 에 is sometimes dropped in casual speech: 수업 후 만나요. In formal writing, 이전에 and 이후에 are more common alternatives.
Practice Tips
- Describe your morning routine using 전에 and 후에: 일어난 후에 세수해요. 세수하기 전에 스트레칭해요.
- Practice with time nouns: 한 시간 전에, 삼 일 후에, 일주일 전에.
- Create "before X, do Y" instructions for everyday tasks.
