Location Words in Hindi
स्थानवाचक शब्द
This article is part of the Hindi grammar tree on Settemila Lingue.
In Brief
Hindi normally puts a location before the verb: मैं यहाँ हूँ। means “I am here,” and ऊपर जाओ। means “Go up.” A location word can stand alone, but when another thing is the reference point, Hindi commonly uses के: मेज़ के नीचे “under the table,” घर के बाहर “outside the house.”
Overview
Location words help you say where people and things are, understand directions, and tell someone where to move. The essential set includes यहाँ “here,” वहाँ “there,” ऊपर “above/up,” नीचे “below/down,” अंदर “inside,” बाहर “outside,” बाएँ “left,” दाएँ “right,” सामने “in front,” and पीछे “behind.” These words answer कहाँ? “where?” and appear constantly in homes, streets, stations, shops, and classrooms.
This is an A1 topic: you can begin with short patterns such as किताब यहाँ है। “The book is here” and बाहर मत जाओ। “Don’t go outside.” The same words later combine with postpositions and more detailed reference points. A postposition is a short relational word placed after a noun or noun phrase—the reverse of the position used by English prepositions such as “in” or “under.”
That difference in order is important for English speakers. English says “under the table,” putting “under” first. Hindi says मेज़ के नीचे, more literally “table’s below,” with the reference object first. Hindi also normally places the verb at the end: कुर्सी मेज़ के पीछे है। “The chair is behind the table.”
How It Works
The core words
| Hindi | Transliteration | Main meanings | Typical question answered |
|---|---|---|---|
| यहाँ | yahā̃ | here, at this place | Where, near the speaker? |
| वहाँ | vahā̃ | there, at that place | Where, away from the speaker? |
| ऊपर | ūpar | above, up, upstairs, on top | Where higher? / Which way upward? |
| नीचे | nīche | below, down, downstairs, under | Where lower? / Which way downward? |
| अंदर | andar | inside, in | Where within? / Which way in? |
| बाहर | bāhar | outside, out | Where outside? / Which way out? |
| बाएँ | bāẽ | left, to the left | Which direction? |
| दाएँ | dāẽ | right, to the right | Which direction? |
| सामने | sāmne | in front, ahead, opposite | Where in the facing/front area? |
| पीछे | pīche | behind, at the back, back | Where in the rear area? |
The marks over the final vowel in यहाँ, वहाँ, बाएँ, and दाएँ indicate nasalization: some air passes through the nose while the vowel is pronounced. In informal digital writing you may encounter यहां and वहां, but यहाँ and वहाँ are the standard spellings used here.
1. Saying where something is
The beginner pattern is:
subject + location + form of होना (“to be”)
A subject is the person or thing the sentence is about. The location usually comes immediately before the final verb.
| Pattern | Example | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| X + यहाँ + है/हूँ/हैं | दुकान यहाँ है। | The shop is here. |
| X + वहाँ + है/हूँ/हैं | वे वहाँ हैं। | They are there. |
| X + position + है/हैं | बच्चे अंदर हैं। | The children are inside. |
Choose the correct form of होना for the subject: हूँ with मैं, है with an ordinary singular subject, and हैं with plural or respectfully addressed subjects. The location word itself does not change for gender or number: लड़का बाहर है, लड़की बाहर है, and बच्चे बाहर हैं all keep बाहर unchanged.
2. Showing movement
The same word can indicate a destination or direction when it appears with a movement verb:
- यहाँ आओ। — Come here.
- वहाँ जाओ। — Go there.
- ऊपर चलो। — Let’s go up. / Go upstairs.
- अंदर आइए। — Please come in.
English often distinguishes “in” from “into” and “outside” from “out.” Hindi frequently lets the verb supply that distinction. With है, अंदर describes a position; with जाओ, it describes movement inward:
| Position | Movement |
|---|---|
| वह अंदर है। — He/She is inside. | वह अंदर गया। — He went inside. |
| वे बाहर हैं। — They are outside. | वे बाहर गए। — They went outside. |
| कमरा ऊपर है। — The room is upstairs. | ऊपर जाइए। — Go upstairs. |
3. Using another object as the reference point
To locate one thing relative to another, use:
reference noun + के + location word
- मेज़ के ऊपर — above/on top of the table
- मेज़ के नीचे — under the table
- घर के अंदर — inside the house
- घर के बाहर — outside the house
- स्कूल के सामने — in front of/opposite the school
- पेड़ के पीछे — behind the tree
Here के forms part of the relational expression. Do not copy English order. घर के बाहर is correct; an English-shaped order such as बाहर घर is not the normal way to say “outside the house.”
Before a postposition, some Hindi nouns change to an oblique form (the form a noun takes before words such as के, में, or पर). At A1, simply learn common phrases as units. For example, लड़का becomes लड़के in लड़के के पीछे “behind the boy.” This noun change belongs to the wider postposition system, not to the location word itself.
4. Left and right
For route instructions, बाएँ and दाएँ commonly occur with मुड़ना “to turn”:
- बाएँ मुड़ो। — Turn left. (informal)
- दाएँ मुड़िए। — Turn right. (polite)
When describing a fixed position relative to something, बाईं ओर “on the left side” and दाईं ओर “on the right side” are often clearer and more natural than bare बाएँ/दाएँ:
- बैंक सड़क के बाईं ओर है। — The bank is on the left side of the road.
- लिफ़्ट दरवाज़े के दाईं ओर है। — The lift is to the right of the door.
The forms बाईं and दाईं agree with feminine ओर “side/direction.” You do not need to analyze this agreement to give basic directions; learn बाईं ओर and दाईं ओर as fixed chunks.
5. “Above” versus “on,” and “inside” versus “in”
Hindi has simple postpositions पर “on/at” and में “in,” while के ऊपर and के अंदर add a more explicit spatial picture.
| Phrase | Usual sense |
|---|---|
| मेज़ पर | on/at the table |
| मेज़ के ऊपर | above the table or on top of it |
| डिब्बे में | in the box |
| डिब्बे के अंदर | inside the box, emphasizing the interior |
के ऊपर does not always prove that two objects are touching. A lamp may be मेज़ के ऊपर because it hangs above the table, while a book may be मेज़ के ऊपर because it rests on top. Use पर when simple contact or location “on/at” is all you mean; context usually resolves के ऊपर.
Examples in Context

| बाहर मत जाओ। | Don’t go outside. | मत makes a negative command |
| बच्चे अंदर खेल रहे हैं। | The children are playing inside. | Location before the verb phrase |
| जूते दरवाज़े के बाहर हैं। | The shoes are outside the door. | A reference point with के बाहर |
| बिल्ली मेज़ के नीचे बैठी है। | The cat is sitting under the table. | Lower than the reference object |
| पंखा हमारे ऊपर है। | The fan is above us. | Pronoun-based reference point |
| कार घर के सामने खड़ी है। | The car is parked in front of the house. | सामने describes the facing/front area |
| बगीचा घर के पीछे है। | The garden is behind the house. | Fixed position with के पीछे |
| अगले चौराहे पर बाएँ मुड़िए। | Turn left at the next intersection. | Polite route instruction |

| वह नीचे से ऊपर आया। | He came up from below. | से marks the starting point |
| सामने देखो, पीछे नहीं। | Look ahead, not behind you. | Direction determined by context |
Common Mistakes
Copying English preposition order
- Wrong: नीचे मेज़ किताब है।
- Right: किताब मेज़ के नीचे है।
- Why: Hindi puts the reference noun first: मेज़ + के नीचे. The whole location phrase then comes before है.
Omitting के in a relational phrase
- Wrong: कार घर सामने है।
- Right: कार घर के सामने है।
- Why: When “the house” is the reference point, standard Hindi uses घर के सामने. Bare सामने is fine only when the reference point is already understood: कार सामने है। “The car is in front/ahead.”
Treating ऊपर as an exact equivalent of English “on”
- Wrong or unclear: तस्वीर मेज़ के ऊपर है। when you mean that a picture is physically lying on the table.
- Clearer: तस्वीर मेज़ पर है।
- Why: के ऊपर can mean “above” without contact as well as “on top of.” पर clearly gives the ordinary “on/at” relation.
Reversing “come” and “go” with here and there
- Awkward in the usual viewpoint: यहाँ जाओ। when speaking from the destination and asking someone to approach you.
- Natural: यहाँ आओ।
- Why: आना means movement toward the speaker or chosen viewpoint; जाना means movement away. Likewise, वहाँ जाओ is the usual pairing for a destination away from the speaker.
Using a bare left/right word for every fixed location
- Less clear: बैंक सड़क के बाएँ है।
- Natural: बैंक सड़क के बाईं ओर है।
- Why: Bare बाएँ/दाएँ works especially well with turning. For “on the left/right side of,” बाईं ओर/दाईं ओर gives a complete, idiomatic phrase.
Forgetting the final verb
- Incomplete as a neutral statement: किताब यहाँ।
- Right: किताब यहाँ है।
- Why: Standard complete sentences normally include है/हैं. In signs, labels, headlines, or quick conversational answers, the verb may be omitted, but beginners should first learn the full pattern.
Usage Notes
Politeness in directions
The location word stays unchanged, but the command reflects your relationship with the listener. अंदर आओ and दाएँ मुड़ो suit familiar conversation with तुम. अंदर आइए and दाएँ मुड़िए are polite forms associated with आप, useful with strangers and in customer-facing situations. Very short signs may use an impersonal noun phrase such as प्रवेश यहाँ “entrance here,” but spoken directions normally use a verb.
सामने depends on viewpoint
सामने may correspond to “in front,” “ahead,” “facing,” or “opposite/across from.” दुकान सामने है can mean “The shop is ahead” or “The shop is opposite,” depending on where the speakers are looking. If the exact relation matters, add context: दुकान सड़क के उस पार, बैंक के सामने है। “The shop is across the road, opposite the bank.”
Common alternatives
अंदर is the everyday word for “inside”; भीतर has a similar meaning and can sound somewhat more formal or literary in some contexts. पीछे covers both “behind” and “at the back.” Hindi normally relies on the sentence and reference point rather than requiring separate words for every English distinction.
Beyond the Basics / Advanced Use
You do not need to master the following distinctions at A1, but they explain forms you will hear often.
यहाँ/वहाँ and इधर/उधर
यहाँ and वहाँ mainly identify places: “here” and “there.” इधर and उधर can indicate a broader area or a direction: “this way/around here” and “that way/over there.” The contrast is flexible in speech, but these examples show the tendency:
- यहाँ बैठो। — Sit here. (this place)
- इधर आओ। — Come this way / come over here.
- उधर मत जाओ। — Don’t go that way / over there.
Related interrogative forms include कहाँ “where?” and किधर “which way/whereabouts?” Thus आप कहाँ हैं? asks for someone’s location, while आप किधर जा रहे हैं? asks which way or where they are going.
Adding source and destination markers
Location words combine with other postpositions:
| Form | Meaning | Example |
|---|---|---|
| यहाँ से | from here | यहाँ से स्टेशन पास है। — The station is near here. |
| वहाँ तक | up to there, as far as there | वहाँ तक पैदल चलो। — Walk as far as there. |
| ऊपर से | from above; over | ऊपर से आवाज़ आई। — A sound came from above. |
| अंदर से | from inside | दरवाज़ा अंदर से बंद है। — The door is locked from the inside. |
| पीछे की ओर | toward the back | पीछे की ओर जाइए। — Go toward the back. |
The natural English rendering of यहाँ से स्टेशन पास है is “The station is near here,” even though से literally marks a point of comparison or origin. Word-for-word translation is not always the best guide.
Location pairs in larger sentence patterns
At a later stage, you will meet relative-correlative pairs—matching words that connect one clause to another:
- जहाँ मैं रहता हूँ, वहाँ बहुत शांति है। — Where I live, it is very peaceful.
- जिधर वह गया, उधर बारिश हो रही थी। — In the direction he went, it was raining.
Here जहाँ…वहाँ links “where” with “there,” while जिधर…उधर links “which way” with “that way.” These patterns extend the basic place words into complex sentences.
Practice Tips
- Build a real map in Hindi. Look around one room and make ten short statements: किताब मेज़ पर है, बैग कुर्सी के नीचे है, जूते बाहर हैं. Using visible reference points makes the word order memorable.
- Practice routes as action pairs. Say and perform आगे जाओ, बाएँ मुड़ो, दाएँ मुड़ो, अंदर आओ, and बाहर जाओ. Then repeat politely with जाइए, मुड़िए, and आइए.
- Learn contrasts, not isolated translations. Drill यहाँ/वहाँ, ऊपर/नीचे, अंदर/बाहर, बाएँ/दाएँ, and सामने/पीछे. For each pair, make one sentence about a fixed position and one about movement.
