Purpose and Result Clauses in Persian
جملههای هدفی و نتیجهای
This article is part of the Persian grammar tree on Settemila Lingue.
In Brief
A purpose clause gives the intended goal of an action and normally uses تا or برای اینکه followed by the subjunctive (a verb form used for actions that are wanted, possible, or not yet presented as facts): آمدم تا ببینمت “I came to see you.” A result clause reports a consequence, commonly with آنقدر ... که “so ... that” or بهطوریکه “in such a way that,” and usually uses an ordinary indicative verb when the result actually occurred.
Overview
Purpose and result answer two different questions. A purpose clause answers “What was the action meant to achieve?” A result clause answers “What actually followed?” Compare زود رفتم تا دیر نرسم “I left early so that I would not arrive late” with آنقدر دیر رفتم که به قطار نرسیدم “I left so late that I missed the train.” The first consequence is intended; the second is reported as a fact.
A clause is a group of words containing its own verb. Persian marks the difference between purpose and factual result not only through connectors but also through the verb form. A planned goal generally takes the subjunctive, such as برسم “that I arrive” or یاد بگیرم “that I learn.” An achieved or observed consequence generally takes the indicative (the ordinary verb form used to state facts), such as رسیدم “I arrived” or یاد گرفتم “I learned.”
This B1 topic builds directly on the Persian subjunctive. It is especially useful when you explain decisions, instructions, precautions, causes, and consequences. English “so that” can express either purpose or result, so English-speaking learners should identify the meaning first rather than translate that phrase mechanically.
How It Works
Purpose with تا
The most frequent compact pattern is:
| Structure | Function | Model |
|---|---|---|
| main clause + تا + subjunctive | positive goal | تمرین میکنم تا پیشرفت کنم. “I practise in order to improve.” |
| main clause + تا + negative subjunctive | goal of preventing something | آرام حرف بزن تا بچه بیدار نشود. “Speak quietly so that the child does not wake up.” |
The subject of the two clauses may be the same or different:
- Same subject: آمدم تا کمکت کنم. “I came to help you.” The speaker both came and intends to help.
- Different subjects: پنجره را باز کردم تا هوا عوض شود. “I opened the window so that the air would change.”
In English, a same-subject purpose is often shortened to “to + verb.” Persian still uses a fully conjugated verb: آمدم تا صحبت کنم, literally “I came so that I speak.” The personal ending on کنم identifies the subject.
The subjunctive is commonly built from the present stem with بـ and a personal ending. Compound verbs usually put بـ on their verbal part, but کردن often appears without it in compounds.
| Infinitive | Purpose-clause form | Meaning in context |
|---|---|---|
| دیدن | ببینم | so that I see |
| رفتن | برود | so that he/she goes |
| رسیدن | برسیم | so that we arrive |
| یاد گرفتن | یاد بگیری | so that you learn |
| صحبت کردن | صحبت کنم | so that I speak |
| آماده شدن | آماده شوید | so that you become ready |
For a negative purpose, نـ replaces the positive subjunctive prefix: نرسم “so that I do not arrive,” نبیند “so that he/she does not see,” فراموش نکنیم “so that we do not forget.” Do not add میـ to a straightforward purpose verb.
Purpose with برای اینکه
برای اینکه introduces purpose more explicitly and can be translated as “in order to” or “in order that.” It can come before or after the main clause:
- برای اینکه فارسیام بهتر شود، هر روز میخوانم. “In order for my Persian to improve, I read every day.”
- هر روز میخوانم برای اینکه فارسیام بهتر شود. “I read every day so that my Persian will improve.”
A comma is helpful when the purpose clause comes first, especially in formal writing. The verb still normally takes the subjunctive. In short everyday sentences, تا is often more economical: هر روز میخوانم تا بهتر شوم.
Purpose without a full clause: برای + noun
When a noun can name the goal, Persian often uses برای “for” rather than a second clause:
| Pattern | Example | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| برای + noun | برای کار به تهران رفتم. | I went to Tehran for work. |
| برای + noun-like verbal expression | برای دیدنت آمدم. | I came to see you. |
In دیدنت, the infinitive دیدن functions like a noun and ـت means “you/your.” This compact pattern is common when the intended meaning and participants are clear. Use a full clause when you need to state a separate subject or make the action more explicit: آمدم تا تو را ببینم.
Result with آنقدر ... که
آنقدر ... که frames a degree so great that a consequence follows. In informal spelling, you may also encounter انقدر; careful writing favors آنقدر.
| Structure | Model |
|---|---|
| آنقدر + adjective + verb + که + result | آنقدر خسته بود که خوابش برد. “He/She was so tired that he/she fell asleep.” |
| آنقدر + verb + که + result | آنقدر خندیدیم که اشکمان درآمد. “We laughed so much that our eyes watered.” |
| noun + آنقدر + adjective + verb + که + result | هوا آنقدر سرد بود که دریاچه یخ زد. “The weather was so cold that the lake froze.” |
Because the second clause normally reports a real consequence, its verb is usually indicative. The tense follows the time of the event; it does not have to match the first clause mechanically.
Related degree patterns include آنقدر زیاد ... که “so much/many ... that” and آنقدر کم ... که “so little/few ... that”: آنقدر وقت کم بود که نتوانستیم همهچیز را ببینیم “There was so little time that we could not see everything.”
Result with بهطوریکه and طوری ... که
بهطوریکه means “in such a way that” or, depending on context, “with the result that.” It links a situation to its consequence and is especially natural in explanatory or more formal prose:
- باران شدید بود، بهطوریکه چند خیابان بسته شد. “The rain was heavy, with the result that several streets were closed.”
The more flexible طوری ... که places “in a way” inside the clause:
- او طوری توضیح داد که همه فهمیدند. “He/She explained it in such a way that everyone understood.”
Be careful: طوری ... که can describe either an actual result or a desired outcome. The verb helps show the difference:
| Meaning | Persian | Verb choice |
|---|---|---|
| observed result | طوری توضیح داد که همه فهمیدند. | فهمیدند, indicative: everyone did understand |
| requested or intended outcome | طوری توضیح بده که همه بفهمند. | بفهمند, subjunctive: make understanding the goal |
Examples in Context
| Persian | English | Note |
|---|---|---|
| آمدم تا ببینمت. | I came to see you. | Same subject; ببینم is subjunctive. |
| برای اینکه یاد بگیرم، تمرین میکنم. | In order to learn, I practise. | The purpose clause comes first. |
| زود رفت تا دیر نشود. | He/She left early so as not to be late. | Negative purpose with نشود. |
| شمارهات را بنویس تا فراموش نکنم. | Write down your number so that I do not forget it. | An instruction followed by its purpose. |
| چراغ را روشن کردم تا بچهها بتوانند بخوانند. | I turned on the light so that the children could read. | The two clauses have different subjects. |
| برای دیدن نمایشگاه به موزه رفتیم. | We went to the museum to see the exhibition. | برای plus a noun-like infinitive phrase. |
| برای دیدنت زودتر آمدم. | I came earlier to see you. | Compact same-subject purpose. |
| آنقدر خسته بود که خوابش برد. | He/She was so tired that he/she fell asleep. | A factual past result. |
| آنقدر آرام حرف زد که چیزی نشنیدم. | He/She spoke so quietly that I heard nothing. | Degree of manner causes the result. |
| هوا آنقدر گرم شده بود که نمیتوانستیم بیرون بمانیم. | It had become so hot that we could not stay outside. | که introduces an actual consequence. |
| جلسه طولانی شد، بهطوریکه قطار آخر را از دست دادیم. | The meeting ran long, with the result that we missed the last train. | Explanatory, relatively formal connection. |
| او طوری مسئله را توضیح داد که همه فهمیدند. | He/She explained the problem in such a way that everyone understood. | Actual result: indicative. |
| طوری بنویس که همه بتوانند بخوانند. | Write in a way that everyone can read. | Desired outcome: subjunctive. |
| در را ببند تا صدا وارد اتاق نشود. | Close the door so that the noise does not enter the room. | Preventive purpose. |
Common Mistakes
Using the ordinary present after a purpose connector
- Wrong: تمرین میکنم تا بهتر حرف میزنم.
- Right: تمرین میکنم تا بهتر حرف بزنم.
- Why: The improvement is the intended goal, not a present fact. Use the subjunctive بزنم, without میـ.
Treating every English “so that” as تا
- Wrong: آنقدر خسته بود تا خوابش برد.
- Right: آنقدر خسته بود که خوابش برد.
- Why: Falling asleep is the actual result of the tiredness. تا would normally signal a goal or, in other contexts, a time limit.
Using an indicative for a negative purpose
- Wrong: زود رفت تا دیر نمیشود.
- Right: زود رفت تا دیر نشود.
- Why: Negative subjunctive uses نـ directly: نشود, not the indicative نمیشود.
Assuming the two clauses must have the same subject
- Awkward idea: avoiding a purpose clause because someone else performs its action
- Natural: پنجره را باز کردم تا بچهها هوا بخورند.
- Why: Persian allows different subjects. The ending ـند in بخورند agrees with بچهها.
Using the subjunctive for a completed result automatically
- Wrong for an observed event: او طوری توضیح داد که همه بفهمند.
- Right: او طوری توضیح داد که همه فهمیدند.
- Why: If the sentence states that everyone actually understood, use the past indicative. The subjunctive version can instead mean that understanding was the intended outcome.
Usage Notes
تا is the normal concise choice for many everyday purpose clauses. برای اینکه is longer and makes the logical relationship more explicit, which can be useful in careful speech and writing. Neither connector is inherently limited to one tense in the main clause: آمدم تا ببینم, میآیم تا ببینم, and خواهم آمد تا ببینم can all be possible if the context supports those times.
Persian often prefers a purpose clause where English uses an infinitive. Do not search for a direct equivalent of English “to” before a bare verb; Persian normally needs either تا + conjugated subjunctive or برای + noun/noun-like expression.
The connector تا has other jobs. It can mean “until” in تا فردا صبر کن “wait until tomorrow,” or mark an endpoint in از تهران تا شیراز “from Tehran to Shiraz.” A following subjunctive and a goal-oriented main action strongly favor the purpose reading, but context remains important.
In speech, pronunciation and spelling may be less formal: برای اینکه is often heard with connected, reduced sounds, and آنقدر may be written informally as انقدر. Learn the standard written forms first. You may also see به طوری که written with spaces; بهطوریکه uses standard half-spaces to show the compound expression clearly.
Beyond the Basics / Advanced Use
Purpose, manner, and result can overlap. In طوری رفتار کن که کسی ناراحت نشود “Behave in a way that no one gets upset,” the second clause is both the desired manner and the result to be avoided, so the subjunctive is natural. In طوری رفتار کرد که همه ناراحت شدند “He/She behaved in such a way that everyone became upset,” the consequence is asserted as real, so the indicative is natural. This mood contrast often communicates more than the connector alone.
Persian can also present a result as expected, possible, or intended rather than completed. After commands and expressions such as کاری کن که ... “do something so that ...,” the subjunctive is normal: کاری کن که دوباره این مشکل پیش نیاید “Do something so that this problem does not happen again.” Although English may call this a “result,” grammatically it behaves like a desired outcome.
چنان ... که and چنانکه occur in more formal or literary language. چنان ... که can resemble آنقدر ... که: چنان باران میبارید که راه دیده نمیشد “It was raining so heavily that the road could not be seen.” Do not confuse this with every use of چنانکه, which can also mean “as” or “as has been stated” in formal prose. At B1, recognizing this family is enough; آنقدر ... که is the more useful productive pattern.
Another useful contrast is cause versus purpose. چون / زیرا explain an existing reason: ماندم چون کار داشتم “I stayed because I had work.” تا / برای اینکه + subjunctive express the intended goal: ماندم تا کارم را تمام کنم “I stayed to finish my work.” A reason looks backward to what motivated the action; a purpose looks forward to what the action is meant to achieve.
Practice Tips
- Build purpose-result pairs. Start with one situation and change the logic: زود رفتم تا دیر نرسم “I left early so as not to be late” versus آنقدر دیر رفتم که به قطار نرسیدم “I left so late that I missed the train.” This trains meaning and verb choice together.
- Underline both verbs. For every example, identify who performs each action, then check the personal ending. This is especially helpful in sentences where the two clauses have different subjects.
- Sort sentences by fact or goal. If the second event is intended, try تا/برای اینکه + subjunctive. If it is reported as an actual consequence, try آنقدر ... که or بهطوریکه + indicative.
