Passive Reflexive in Spanish

Pasiva Refleja

This article is part of the Spanish grammar tree on Settemila Lingue.

In Brief

The Spanish passive reflexive (pasiva refleja) uses se + a third-person verb when the receiver of an action matters more than the person performing it: Se venden coches means “Cars are sold.” The verb agrees with that receiver: Se vende un coche but Se venden coches. If there is no grammatical subject to agree with, Spanish instead uses impersonal se and a singular verb: Aquí se vive bien (“People live well here”).

Overview

The pasiva refleja is one of Spanish’s most natural ways to express a passive idea. A passive construction presents what is sold, needed, built, or discussed without making the doer the center of the sentence. English often uses be + past participle (“rooms are rented”), while Spanish frequently prefers se + verb: Se alquilan habitaciones.

This construction is especially common in notices, advertisements, instructions, news reports, formal procedures, and descriptions of general practice. You will see it on signs such as Se venden entradas and in institutional language such as Se admitirán solicitudes hasta el viernes. It is not limited to formal writing, however: ¿Aquí se sirven desayunos? is perfectly ordinary conversation.

At C1, the main challenge is not recognizing se. It is deciding whether a sentence is truly passive or impersonal. In a passive-reflexive sentence, the noun phrase naming what undergoes the action is the grammatical subject (the part that controls verb agreement). In an impersonal sentence, no such subject exists, so the verb remains third-person singular.

How It Works

The basic pattern

The core structure is:

se + third-person verb + subject receiving the action

The verb may appear before or after the subject, but it must agree with that subject in number.

Subject Pattern Example Meaning
singular se + third-person singular Se vende la casa. The house is for sale / is being sold.
plural se + third-person plural Se venden las casas. The houses are for sale / are being sold.

The word “subject” may feel surprising here because la casa does not perform the action. It is a patient subject: the person or thing affected by the action, while still grammatically controlling the verb. You can confirm this by changing singular to plural:

  • Se necesita un intérprete.
  • Se necesitan dos intérpretes.

The hidden doer is understood as people in general, an organization, or someone whose identity is unknown or irrelevant. The construction normally does not name that doer.

Which verbs can form it?

The passive reflexive is normally built with a transitive verb (a verb that can act on a direct object—something directly affected by the action). Compare the active and passive-reflexive versions:

Active idea Passive-reflexive version
La empresa busca programadores. Se buscan programadores.
El museo organiza visitas guiadas. Se organizan visitas guiadas.
Los técnicos repararán los ascensores. Se repararán los ascensores.

In the active sentence, programadores, visitas guiadas, and los ascensores are direct objects. In the passive-reflexive sentence, they become subjects and determine whether the verb is singular or plural.

Tense, mood, and verbal form

Se does not determine tense. The verb can carry whatever tense or mood the context requires:

Time or function Spanish English
present practice Se revisan los documentos cada mañana. The documents are checked every morning.
completed past Se aprobaron las medidas ayer. The measures were approved yesterday.
ongoing past practice Antes se publicaban dos ediciones. Two editions used to be published before.
compound past Se han detectado varios errores. Several errors have been detected.
future Se anunciarán los resultados mañana. The results will be announced tomorrow.
condition or requirement Es importante que se respeten las normas. It is important that the rules be respected.

In a compound tense, the conjugated auxiliary still agrees in the usual verbal pattern, while the past participle remains in its fixed compound-tense form: se ha vendido la casa, se han vendido las casas. This differs from a ser passive, where the participle behaves like an adjective and agrees: la casa fue vendida, las casas fueron vendidas.

Passive reflexive versus impersonal se

These constructions look similar but have different grammar.

Feature Passive reflexive Impersonal se
Meaning Something is done to a subject People in general do something
Verb type normally transitive transitive or intransitive
Grammatical subject yes no expressed subject
Agreement singular or plural always third-person singular
Example Se venden coches. Aquí se vive bien.

An intransitive verb (one that does not take a direct object) cannot form a passive. In Aquí se vive bien, there is no thing that is “lived,” so se vive is impersonal: “people live well here” or “life is good here.” The same applies to Se trabaja mucho, Se llegó tarde and Se habla de política.

Some singular sentences are structurally ambiguous because singular agreement does not reveal the difference. Se busca un responsable can naturally be analyzed as passive (“A person in charge is being sought”). To identify the pattern, ask whether the following noun can be the affected subject and whether making it plural changes the verb: Se buscan dos responsables. If it can, the passive analysis is available.

People and the personal a

When a specific or otherwise individualized person is a direct object, Spanish normally marks that person with the personal a. In a construction with impersonal se, that marked phrase remains an object, not a subject, so the verb stays singular:

  • Se entrevistó a los candidatos. — The candidates were interviewed.
  • Se avisó a las familias. — The families were notified.
  • Se busca a dos testigos. — Two witnesses are being sought.

This is a crucial contrast:

  • Se necesitan empleados. — Employees are needed. Passive reflexive; no personal a; plural agreement.
  • Se entrevistó a los empleados. — The employees were interviewed. Impersonal se; personal a; singular verb.

With nonspecific occupational or role nouns, Spanish commonly omits personal a, allowing a clear passive-reflexive construction: Se buscan camareros and Se necesitan enfermeras.

Position with infinitives and modal verbs

With a conjugated verb followed by an infinitive, se can often appear before the conjugated verb or attached to the infinitive:

  • Se pueden presentar solicitudes hasta el lunes.
  • Pueden presentarse solicitudes hasta el lunes.

Both mean “Applications can be submitted until Monday.” In careful usage, the finite verb commonly agrees with the plural subject: se pueden presentar solicitudes. The attached form presentarse must not be confused automatically with a genuinely reflexive meaning; the whole clause and its meaning determine the analysis.

Examples in Context

Spanish English Note
Se hablan tres idiomas en la oficina. Three languages are spoken in the office. Plural subject: tres idiomas.
Se necesita experiencia previa. Previous experience is required. Singular uncountable subject.
Se necesitan empleados para el turno de noche. Employees are needed for the night shift. The plural verb agrees with empleados.
Se alquilan habitaciones por semanas. Rooms are rented by the week. Typical advertisement wording.
Se vendió el edificio el año pasado. The building was sold last year. Completed event in the preterite.
Se vendieron todas las entradas en una hora. All the tickets were sold in an hour. Plural agreement in the preterite.
Se han introducido nuevas medidas de seguridad. New safety measures have been introduced. Compound past with plural agreement.
Se publicarán los resultados el martes. The results will be published on Tuesday. Future passive meaning.
No se aceptan pagos en efectivo. Cash payments are not accepted. Negative notice.
Es esencial que se cumplan los plazos. It is essential that the deadlines be met. Subjunctive after an evaluation.
Durante la visita se explicaron los cambios. The changes were explained during the visit. The subject follows the verb.
Aquí se come bien y se trabaja con calma. People eat well and work calmly here. Impersonal: both verbs lack a patient subject.
Se entrevistó a cinco especialistas. Five specialists were interviewed. Impersonal se with personal a; singular verb.
Las solicitudes pueden presentarse en línea. Applications can be submitted online. Se attached to the infinitive.

Common Mistakes

Failing to make the verb agree

  • Wrong: Se vende apartamentos en el centro.
  • Right: Se venden apartamentos en el centro.
  • Why: Apartamentos is the plural patient subject, so the verb must be plural. English “apartments are sold” also shows agreement, but Spanish expresses it on the main verb rather than with a form of “be.”

Making an impersonal verb plural

  • Wrong: Aquí se viven bien.
  • Right: Aquí se vive bien.
  • Why: Vivir is intransitive in this sentence. There is no plural subject, so impersonal se requires third-person singular.

Treating a phrase with personal a as the subject

  • Wrong: Se entrevistaron a los candidatos.
  • Right: Se entrevistó a los candidatos.
  • Why: In the standard impersonal analysis, a los candidatos is a personal direct object. It does not control agreement, so the verb stays singular.

Adding an ordinary direct-object pronoun to a passive reflexive

  • Wrong: Las normas se las revisan cada año when you mean “The rules are reviewed every year.”
  • Right: Las normas se revisan cada año.
  • Why: Las normas is already the subject of the passive-reflexive clause, not an object to be repeated with las. The wrong version can have a different colloquial structure and meaning, but it is not the intended passive.

Using ser and passive se together

  • Wrong: Los documentos se fueron enviados ayer.
  • Right: Los documentos fueron enviados ayer. / Los documentos se enviaron ayer.
  • Why: Choose either the ser + participle passive or passive se. Do not combine their markers in one passive construction.

Naming the agent with por

  • Awkward: Se aprobó la propuesta por el comité.
  • Better: La propuesta fue aprobada por el comité. / El comité aprobó la propuesta.
  • Why: Passive se normally suppresses the agent. If the doer is important enough to name in a por phrase, the ser passive or active voice is usually clearer.

Usage Notes

Passive se is highly productive and usually more idiomatic than the ser + past participle passive when the agent is irrelevant. Compare Se suspendió el partido por la lluvia with El partido fue suspendido por la lluvia. Both are grammatical, but the first often sounds lighter and more natural when no human agent needs mentioning.

English frequently uses passive wording in notices: “No cards are accepted” or “Breakfast is served until ten.” Spanish signs often favor No se aceptan tarjetas and Se sirve el desayuno hasta las diez. English also uses “you,” “we,” or “they” generically; Spanish can avoid choosing any of these with se.

Word order is flexible. A new or indefinite subject commonly follows the verb—Se buscan voluntarios—which is especially natural in announcements. A known topic can come first—Las solicitudes se revisan por orden de llegada. Fronting the subject does not turn the construction into a reflexive action; agreement and meaning remain passive.

Do not assume every se + verb sequence belongs here. Spanish se also marks true reflexive actions (Ana se peina), reciprocal actions (Se abrazaron), lexical pronominal verbs (se arrepintió), accidental-event constructions (se me cayó el vaso), and other patterns. The practical test for passive se is whether something undergoes a transitive action and controls verb agreement.

Beyond the Basics / Advanced Use

Choosing among active, ser passive, passive se, and impersonal se

At an advanced level, the choice is about information focus as much as grammar.

Form Best suited to Example
active naming a clear agent El jurado anunciará el fallo.
ser passive highlighting the event while retaining or allowing an agent El fallo será anunciado por el jurado.
passive se presenting a process or result without an agent Se anunciará el fallo mañana.
impersonal se describing what people generally do Aquí se habla mucho de política.

Official and journalistic writing often uses passive se to foreground procedures: Se analizaron los datos y se descartaron dos hipótesis. This can create a neutral, institutional tone. Good style still requires clarity: a long chain of agentless clauses may hide responsibility. If who acted matters, name the agent in an active sentence.

Agreement in complex noun phrases

Agreement follows the head of the subject—the main noun that determines its number—not the nearest noun:

  • Se aprobó la reforma de las pensiones. The head reforma is singular.
  • Se aprobaron las condiciones del contrato. The head condiciones is plural.
  • Se detectó una serie de errores. The grammatical head serie is singular, even though errores is plural.

Collective and quantity expressions can create variation in real usage, but careful writing should begin by identifying the grammatical head and maintaining consistent agreement.

Avoiding false passives

A sentence such as Se habló de los problemas is not passive reflexive. The preposition de belongs to hablar de, and los problemas is not a direct object that can become a patient subject. The sentence is impersonal: “People talked about the problems.” Compare the true passive Se discutieron los problemas, where transitive discutir allows los problemas to control plural agreement.

This contrast is useful with other prepositional verbs:

  • Se insistió en las medidas. — Impersonal; en las medidas does not control agreement.
  • Se revisaron las medidas. — Passive reflexive; las medidas is the plural subject.

Practice Tips

  1. Run the plural test. Take a singular example such as Se vende una bicicleta and make the affected noun plural. If the verb must become se venden, you have identified a passive-reflexive subject.
  2. Sort real examples into two columns. Collect signs, headlines, and workplace notices containing se. Label each one “passive” or “impersonal,” then underline the subject only in the passive examples.
  3. Rewrite the same message three ways. Start with La empresa publicará los resultados, then produce Los resultados serán publicados por la empresa and Se publicarán los resultados. Notice what each version foregrounds and whether the agent remains useful.
