In Brief
Classical Arabic verse is built on quantity: an ordered pattern of short and long syllables, represented traditionally by recurring feet such as فعولن and مستفعلن. To scan a line, read what is actually pronounced, divide each half-line into feet, and allow only recognised variations. Rhyme is organised around the recurring رويّ (rawī), the consonant that anchors the endings of the poem.
Overview
العَروض (ʿarūḍ, prosody) is the traditional discipline used to describe the rhythm of Arabic poetry. Its system is associated with the eighth-century scholar الخليل بن أحمد الفراهيدي (al-Khalīl ibn Aḥmad al-Farāhīdī). He organised poetic rhythm into meters called بحور (buḥūr, literally “seas”), analysed through repeated units called تفعيلات (tafʿīlāt, metrical feet). Fifteen meters are traditionally credited to al-Khalīl; المتدارك was added by later prosodists, producing the familiar inventory of sixteen.
This is a C2 topic because successful scansion demands much more than recognising a printed pattern. You must hear case endings, assimilation, vowel length, elision, and the difference between spelling and connected pronunciation. You also need to distinguish a legitimate metrical variation from an actual break in the meter. Knowledge of rhetoric helps with interpretation, but meter concerns the sound structure of the line rather than its imagery or argument.
For an English-speaking learner, the central adjustment is that classical Arabic meter is not primarily a pattern of stressed and unstressed syllables like traditional English meter. Stress may affect performance, but the classical analysis tracks sequences of moving and still consonants—and, in modern phonological terms, short and heavy syllables. English rhyme is also often described from the last stressed vowel onward; Arabic rhyme theory instead gives a central role to the repeated consonant, the rawī, and to the sounds surrounding it.
How It Works
The architecture of a line
A complete classical line, a بيت (bayt), normally has two half-lines:
- الصدر (ṣadr): the first half-line
- العجز (ʿajuz): the second half-line
The final foot of the first half is traditionally called the عَروض, while the final foot of the second is the ضرب. The other feet are حشو (ḥashw, the internal part of the line). This vocabulary matters because some variations are permitted only—or most characteristically—at the ends of half-lines.
A poem usually keeps the same meter throughout. It also normally preserves one rhyme system across its lines, although the opening line of a classical قصيدة may rhyme in both half-lines, a feature called التصريع (taṣrīʿ).
From sounds to metrical units
Traditional scansion starts from two states:
- متحرّك: a consonant followed by a short vowel, conventionally marked
/ - ساكن: a consonant with no following vowel, conventionally marked

These combine into larger rhythmic elements. A سبب (sabab, a two-part link) may be light or heavy; a وتد (watad, literally “peg”) is a more stable three-part element. Feet are conventional arrangements of these elements. You do not need to replace the traditional system with modern syllable theory, but a useful learner shortcut is:
- a short syllable such as لَ is light;
- a syllable closed by a consonant, such as لَمْ, is heavy;
- a syllable with a long vowel, such as لَا, is heavy.
This shortcut is helpful, not complete. Traditional Arabic analysis operates on the fully pronounced sequence, including sounds created or removed in connected speech.
Scan pronunciation, not ordinary spelling
The first practical rule of الكتابة العروضية (metrical transcription) is: write what is pronounced and omit what is not pronounced. For example:
- an unprinted long vowel may count: هذا is pronounced approximately هاذا;
- the doubled consonant of a shadda counts as two consonants, the first still and the second moving;
- التنوين (tanwīn, the final -n sound written with doubled vowel marks) contributes a pronounced ن;
- the لام of the definite article is not separately pronounced before a sun letter: الشَّمس begins in connected sound with the doubled ش;
- همزة الوصل (the joining hamza whose vowel disappears in connected speech) is omitted when the preceding word runs into it;
- letters written but silent, and vowels lost through connection, do not receive metrical weight.
Therefore an undiacritised line may be impossible to scan securely until you know its grammar and intended reading. A different case ending or a pause can change the sound sequence.
Feet and recurring patterns
A meter is not merely the name of one foot. It is a prescribed sequence of feet in each half-line, with recognised forms for its final positions. The following patterns are common teaching forms; actual poems often show licensed changes.

The familiar Ṭawīl formula فعولن مفاعيلن فعولن مفاعلن describes each half of a widespread form. Thus Imruʾ al-Qays’s opening line can be analysed as:
قِفا نَبْكِ مِنْ ذِكْرى حَبيبٍ وَمَنْزِلِ
بِسِقْطِ اللِّوى بَيْنَ الدَّخولِ فَحَوْمَلِ
فعولن مفاعيلن فعولن مفاعلن
فعولن مفاعيلن فعولن مفاعلن
Scansion is based on the connected, grammatically vocalised reading, not on the bare consonantal text alone.
The sixteen meters
The standard inventory is:

These groupings reflect the traditional دوائر العروض (prosodic circles), in which related patterns can be generated by beginning at different points in an abstract sequence. The circles explain structural relationships; they are not the order in which sounds are performed. Some listed meters are frequent in the classical corpus, while others are rare.
A meter may also occur in a reduced form. مجزوء means that a foot has been removed from each half-line; مشطور has one half of the usual line; منهوك is still more reduced. These labels describe the form of the line, not a mistake.
Licensed variation: زحاف and علّة
Printed textbook patterns are ideal templates. Real verse uses conventional changes:
- الزحاف (ziḥāf) is generally a local, often optional change affecting a sabab, especially within a line.
- العلّة (ʿilla) is generally a change involving addition or deletion at the end of a half-line; once adopted in the ضرب, it is often maintained through the poem.
This is a practical distinction, not a rule without exceptions. The exact permitted changes depend on the meter and position. Two common examples are:
- الخبن (khabn): deletion of the second still element, so مستفعلن may surface as متفعلن;
- القبض (qabḍ): deletion of the fifth still element, so فعولن may become فعولُ, and مفاعيلن may become مفاعلن where the meter permits it.
Do not “repair” every mismatch by naming a variation. First establish the meter, then check whether that precise transformation is licensed in that foot and position.
Rhyme and the rawī
القافية (qāfiya) is the structured sound ending repeated from line to line. It is more than the last written letter. Its anchor is the رويّ (rawī), the consonant on which the poem is said to be built: a poem with recurring ل is لامية, one with م is ميمية, and so on.
Sounds around the rawī have their own names. Important ones include الرِّدف (ridf), a long vowel immediately before the rawī; التأسيس (taʾsīs), an alif separated from the rawī by one moving consonant; الدخيل, that intervening consonant; and الوصل (waṣl), a sound following the rawī, such as a vowel prolonged in performance or a suffix consonant in recognised configurations. In حَوْمَلِ and شَمْأَلِ, for example, the recurring ل is the rawī, not the final written vowel mark.

Common Mistakes
Scanning the spelling instead of the sound
- Wrong: Count every written letter in الشَّمس separately, including the article’s ل.
- Right: Scan the pronounced doubled شّ; the ل assimilates and is not independently heard.
- Why: Arabic orthography preserves letters that connected pronunciation may suppress, while shadda represents two consonantal positions.
Treating meter as English stress rhythm
- Wrong: Decide that a line is Kāmil because its strong beats “sound like” three stresses.
- Right: Establish the sequence of pronounced short and heavy syllables, then match it to valid feet and variations.
- Why: Classical Arabic meter is quantitative. Performance stress does not define the meter.
Forcing the base foot everywhere
- Wrong: Reject مفاعلن because the memorised template contains مفاعيلن.
- Right: Check whether القبض or another licensed change produces that form in the relevant meter and position.
- Why: The ideal pattern is a family of allowed realisations, not a rigid string copied unchanged into every line.
Using “variation” to excuse any broken line
- Wrong: Label an unexplained missing syllable زحافاً without identifying its rule.
- Right: Name the transformation, show the original and resulting foot, and verify that it is allowed there.
- Why: الزحافات والعلل are a constrained system, not a general licence for irregularity.
Calling the final written letter the rawī automatically
- Wrong: Treat any final ه or ا as the rawī solely because it is last on the page.
- Right: Analyse the repeated endings across several lines and separate the rawī from possible وصل, ردف, or other rhyme elements.
- Why: The rhyme is phonological and relational. One isolated spelling is often insufficient.
Scanning an unvocalised line before resolving its syntax
- Wrong: Guess final vowels word by word merely to make a preferred meter fit.
- Right: Determine the grammar and transmitted reading first, then test the meter.
- Why: Case vowels, tanwīn, and joining all affect the metrical sequence. Meter can help choose between plausible readings, but it should not override sound grammar without evidence.
Usage Notes
Classical poems were composed for oral performance, even when encountered today as printed text. Read each line aloud in connected Classical Arabic. Artificial pauses at every word boundary introduce consonant closures and suppress joining vowels in ways that can hide the pattern.
Not every poem uses all theoretical possibilities. Meter frequency varies by period, genre, and poet, and rare meters may be easier to recognise from a reference chart than from intuition. The names الطويل, الكامل, and البسيط are technical labels; their everyday meanings (“long,” “complete,” and “simple/extended”) do not by themselves describe how a particular line feels.
Editors also differ in how fully they vocalise poetry and how they print a foot after variation. When analyses disagree, compare the transmitted wording, the proposed vocalisation, and the accepted forms of the meter before assuming that one analyst has merely counted incorrectly.
Beyond the Basics: Advanced Use
Rhyme faults
Classical criticism names faults that disturb expected rhyme correspondences. الإقواء commonly refers to disagreement in the rawī’s grammatical vowel, such as alternating kasra and ḍamma where consistency is expected. الإيطاء is the repeated use of the same rhyme word with the same meaning within a disfavouredly short interval. السناد covers several mismatches in sounds or features before the rawī. Definitions and tolerance can vary among prosodists, so identify the school or handbook being followed when making a fine-grained judgment.
Meter, syntax, and poetic licence
A poet may alter ordinary wording to preserve meter or rhyme: inversion, ellipsis, unusual inflection, shortened vowels, or restored older forms may occur. These are often grouped under الضرورات الشعرية (poetic necessities). “Necessity” does not mean that anything is acceptable. A strong analysis should explain both the metrical pressure and the linguistic form, and should still consider whether the choice serves emphasis or style.
From the qaṣīda to modern verse
Modern Arabic poetry includes several distinct rhythmic practices:
- الشعر العمودي maintains the two-half-line structure, a classical meter, and normally a unified rhyme.
- شعر التفعيلة or الشعر الحر retains the recurring foot of a meter but allows a variable number of feet per line and more flexible rhyme.
- قصيدة النثر (the prose poem) does not claim adherence to al-Khalīl’s meters, though it may create rhythm through syntax, repetition, and sound patterning.
Calling all three “free verse” erases an important Arabic distinction. A foot-based modern poem may be metrically freer than the classical بيت while still depending on the traditional inventory.
A reliable analysis workflow
For a difficult line, use this order:
- Establish the text and its grammatical vocalisation.
- Read it continuously and produce a metrical transcription.
- Mark moving and still consonants, or light and heavy syllables.
- Find repeated foot boundaries across both half-lines and nearby lines.
- Test a likely meter against its recognised forms.
- Name every variation precisely.
- Analyse the line endings across the poem to identify the rawī and associated rhyme sounds.
A single line can suggest a meter, but several lines provide much stronger evidence—especially when the text has variant readings.
Practice Tips
- Learn patterns by voice, not only by sight. Recite one stable example for each common meter while tapping the feet. Begin with المتقارب, الرجز, الكامل, and الطويل, then expand to the rarer meters.
- Scan in three passes. First add full vowel marks, then rewrite according to connected pronunciation, and only then divide the line into feet. Keeping these stages separate reveals whether an error is grammatical, phonetic, or metrical.
- Build a variation notebook. For each example of خبن, قبض, or an علّة, record the base foot, changed foot, meter, and position. This prevents the common habit of treating a remembered variation as universally available.
